Why you can trust Top Ten Reviews

Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test.

Compared to all the other models in our round up of the best robot lawn mowers, the Husqvarna Automower 315X is the most expensive gadget at around the 2,500 mark. But that’s the price you pay for having a piece of outdoor garden equipment that carries the Husqvarna name and quality.

The Swedish manufacturer actually invented the first ever robotic lawn mower in 1994 and has been continuously developing mowing robots since then. Unlike any of the other robotic lawn mowers we have reviewed, like the Gardena 4069 or MOWRO RM24A, the price includes the installation of the boundary wires.

The Husqvarna Automower 315X is the smallest model in the brand’s X-Line range. This range comes with all the added extras that you could need – including a GPS tracking system, LED headlights, and Automower Connect. The latter enables you to control the lawnmower remotely via an app. But whilst it’s the smallest in the X-line series, it is one of the most powerful machines for larger lawns and slopes.

Husqvarna Automower 315X: Features

The Husqvarna Automower 315X has three razor-sharp blades which cut little and often to create very fine grass clippings. According to the Swedish manufacturer, these fine grass clippings ‘act as a natural fertilizer for your lawn so there’s no need for bagging’.

Spot cutting mode is another feature the Husqvarna Automower has. This enables the robotic lawn mower to cut a section of longer grass in spiral motions to even out the grass length. Once the mower has finished making the grass even, it will resume in automatic mode. This is handy if you have longer grass in some areas because of garden furniture coverage.

The Husqvarna Automower 315X also doesn’t leave any tire marks after it’s finished cutting the grass. And when it needs more charge, it automatically takes itself back to the charging dock the robotic lawn mower comes with. Using GPS, this clever mower will get to know your garden layout and will ensure it covers all areas of the lawn to do a thorough job.

Perhaps the added extra of this robot lawn mower is the fact it comes with Automower Connect. This is Husqvarna’s own app which can be used with its range of robot mowers. The special app gives lets you control the mower. You can start, park, or stop the lawnmower simply by operating it via the app. Plus, thanks to the built-in GPS, you can keep track of the robot’s movements on your property via a map view. Not only does this minimize the risk of theft, but its high-sounding alarm (which sounds when it is picked up without having its pin entered), adds another layer of protection.

Husqvarna Automower 315X: Performance

Weighing in at 9 kilos, the Husqvarna Automower 315X mows areas up to 0.4 acres and can cope with inclines up to 40% inside the working area. It can also take tough terrain (like gravel or tarmac) in its stride, as it can be programmed to skip sidewalks.

The three blades have a cutting width of 22cm with a minimum cutting height of 20mm and maximum of 60mm.

Once charged fully, the Husqvarna Automower 315X has a typical mow time of around 70 minutes. This is over double the amount of time the average home lawn takes to mow (standing at just 30 minutes). The sturdy robotic lawn mower can handle traveling over leaves and small twigs, however, it’s normally best to clear your lawn of any huge obstructions.

The Husqvarna Automower 315X is powered to perform in rain or shine and it’s suitable to use even when it’s raining.

Husqvarna Automower 315X: Design

Perhaps one of the first things you will notice about the Husqvarna Automower 315X, is that it looks more like a high-spec toy car than a lawn mower. The body of the Husqvarna Automower 315X is black, it has got LED headlights, a front bumper, and orange-colored wheel caps.

The LED headlights are energy-efficient – perfect if you are looking for a robotic lawn mower that can work after hours. The only other time the lights will flash on if there is a malfunction with the device.

If the Automower is lifted off the ground or tips over, the cutting blades are designed to automatically shut off. The front bumper is made from rubber, making it strong and resilient if it bashes into anything.

Husqvarna Automower 315X: User reviews

The Husqvarna Automower 315X robot lawn mower hasn’t got masses of user reviews and that’s because it was only released in 2020. However, it has received an overall star rating of 3.5 stars out of five on Amazon.

Positive user reviews mention how this is the ‘best auto-mower ever’ as it’s super quiet and does a ‘super job cutting’ the lawn evenly. Whilst one commented it was ‘overpriced’ and another said that in less than one year of ownership, one of the wheels has ‘fallen of twice’.

Should you buy the Husqvarna Automower 315X?

Although this is one of the most expensive robot lawn mowers we reviewed, it does come with all the features you could want and more. You can control it remotely, it has GPS, and it comes with anti-theft features to give you some peace of mind. This powerful robot lawn mower is best suited for larger lawns and those with steep slopes.

But there are other inexpensive lawn mowers that could get the job done. What will determine whether you purchase this or not, is whether you want the ease of installation (instead of laying the boundary wires yourself) and whether you will use all the extra high-spec features.

Pros

  • Excellent cutting and edging performance
  • Slick mobile app
  • Includes Bluetooth, cellular, and GPS radios
  • Quiet

Cons

No stranger to outdoor appliances, Sweden-based Husqvarna offers a variety of robot lawn mowers for yards of all shapes and sizes. We got our hands on the Automower 315X, a high-end, feature-packed model with a premium 1,799 price. The 315X works with a well-designed mobile app that lets you use your phone to start and stop the mower, monitor its progress, create schedules, and see where it’s been on a map of your property. Its user-friendly programming options, outstanding cutting performance, and quiet operation earn it our Editors’ Choice for robotic lawn mowers.

Automower 315X Design and Features

The Automower 315X is a sleek-looking machine. Its two-tone plastic shroud with slim headlights and stylish wheels make it look more like an exotic race car than a lawn mower. It measures 9.8 by 20.0 by 24.8 inches (HWD), weighs 22.2 pounds, and is designed for lawns of up to 0.4 acres. Husqvarna offers seven different models for smaller (up to 0.25 acres) and larger (up to 1.25 acres) lawns, ranging in price from 1,499.95 to 3,499.95.

Робот-газонокосилка Husqvarna Automower

The 315X has an IPX4 weatherproof rating, which means you can leave it out in the elements. Unlike the Worx Landroid and the Robomow RS622 mowers, however, the 315X lacks a rain sensor that will send the mower back to the charging base when it detects rainfall. The 315X has no trouble working in the rain, but you’ll have to keep the cutting deck free of wet grass clippings to ensure proper operation.

The top of the mower has one hatch that opens to reveal the control panel, another that hides the cutting height adjustment dial, and a large red Stop button. The control panel has 19 buttons (including a numeric keypad) and a 2.6-by-1.5-inch color screen.

Black and Decker 40V MAX Lithium 20 In. Mower (CM2040)

EGO Power Lawn Mower (LM2001)

As with the Honda Miimo HRM310, the 315X uses a floating deck design that allows it to navigate the contours of your lawn without scalping the grass when it hits high spots. It also uses the same three-blade spinning disc cutting mechanism as the Miimo, that turns clippings into fine mulch so there’s no bagging involved. It has a cutting width of 8.7 inches and you can adjust the cutting height from 0.78 to 2.36 inches, and it handles slopes up to 22 degrees. The mower uses a 2,300rpm, 58dB electric motor and is powered by an 18V/2,100mAh lithium ion battery that gives it 70 minutes of power and requires 60 minutes of charge time.

The Automower 315X doesn’t come with a remote, but it is the only robotic mower we’ve tested that offers GPS, cellular, and Bluetooth technology (the Robomow RS622 is equipped with a Bluetooth radio and a remote). It comes with a 10-year cellular plan that lets you connect to it from anywhere using the excellent Automower Connect mobile app for Android and iOS devices. The GPS radio tells the mower where it has already cut so it doesn’t keep going over the same spot, and it uses Google Maps to give you a satellite view of the last cycle of cutting activity, defined by red lines. Better yet, it allows you to track the mower’s location if somebody decides to liberate it from your propert—you also need a PIN security code to restart the mower if it is stopped suddenly or lifted from its base.

You can control the 315X using the onboard panel, which offers a straightforward menu system with sub-menus that are easy to navigate, but it’s much easier to use the mobile app. That said, you have to use the onboard controls for initial setup and pairing with the mobile app.

The app opens to a Dashboard screen that shows the current status of the mower (parked, charging, mowing), battery level, and the next scheduled start time and date. At the bottom of the screen are Park, Start, Timer, and Map buttons. Pressing the Park button sends the mower back to its base and gives you the option of park it until further notice or the next scheduled cutting time. You can also select a parking duration of three hours up to seven days. The Start button lets you override the timer. The Timer button takes you to the scheduling screen where you can create cutting schedules for specific days of the week at specific times of the day. And the Map button opens a Google Maps screen that shows an aerial view of your property with GPS navigation lines that indicate where the mower has traveled recently.

You can access the Map and Timer screens by tapping the three-bar icon in the upper left corner of the Dashboard screen. Here you can also access the Settings menu to enable the Weather Timer, which allows the mower to automatically adjust cutting times based on seasonal growing conditions. The Eco Mode setting turns off the perimeter wire signal when the mower is charging or parked, and the Spiral cutting setting allows the mower to cut in tight spirals when it hits an area where the grass is longer than usual. There are five intensity (grass length) levels to choose from ranging from Very Low to Very High. Other settings include GPS Assisted Navigation, Corridor Width (for navigating through narrow passage ways), Exit Angles (which make it easier for the mower to reach the largest working area depending on the shape and size of your lawn), Reversing Distance (how far back the mower will have to go when leaving the base station), and Drive Past Wire (how far past the perimeter wire the mower will travel before turning around).

Included in the box are the mower, a charging base, nine extra blades, a power cable, and an owner’s manual. You can install the mower yourself, but you’ll have to purchase an installation kit (99.95) that contains almost 500 feet of perimeter wire, stakes for holding the wire in place, and an assortment of connectors and splicers. Or, you can have a Husqvarna dealer install the mower. Installation rates vary depending on the dealer and the complexity of your lawn. For example, on Long Island where I tested, some dealers charge 50 cents per foot of wire being laid, while other dealers charge an hourly rate. Additional costs may be incurred if it’s necessary to run wire under driveways or sidewalks.

Installation and Performance

A Husqvarna rep came to my home to install the 315X, which was relatively easy since I already had perimeter wire installed from a previous review (most mowers use the same type of wire). That said, count on spending anywhere from an hour or more on your knees (depending on your lawn size), measuring and installing the perimeter wire.

Once the base station was installed and powered up, we went to the Installation menu to enter my lawn size, enter the correct date and time, and create a schedule. After the installation was complete, I downloaded the app and created an account. I received a verification email, went to the Accessories menu on the mower, and selected Automower Connect. I tapped New Pairing to generate a paring code, opened the app, tapped Add Automower, and selected the 315X from the list. I entered the pairing code when prompted and was immediately connected.

As we saw with the Robowmow RS622 and the Honda Miimo HRM310, the Husqvarna 315X worked wonderfully. It never failed to go out and do its job according to my schedule, and like the other mowers, it covered my entire 1,950-square-foot lawn in around one hour without missing any spots.

Edging performance was also very good: The 315x managed to navigate my curb line without getting stuck or tumbling into the street, and it handled several large divots with ease, as did the Honda Miimo. It always stopped immediately when it came in contact with large branches and other objects. And it’s very quiet in operation, which is a huge plus.

The Automower Connect app makes it easy to do things like start and park the mower, change timer settings, and track the mower’s progress using your phone, but you can’t steer it from the app like you can with the Robomow RS622 app. That said, you have to stay within Bluetooth range to use the Robomow app, whereas the Husqvrna’s cellular radio gives you control from anywhere. over, scheduling is much easier with the Husqvrna app than the Robomow app, which uses a somewhat confusing, unconventional method. The Honda Miimo does not come with a mobile app and must be controlled using the onboard panel.

Conclusions

With the Husqvarna Automower 315X, you can spend your weekend barbecuing, swimming, or on other fun activities instead of pushing a loud gas-powered mower around your lawn. Its 1,799 price is steep, but if you put a premium on downtime and don’t want to put up with the cost and noise of landscapers, it’s money well spent. It did a fantastic job of cutting in our tests, and was so quiet that I was able to run it at night without disturbing anyone. It’s also the only mower we’ve reviewed that uses cellular technology so you can control it remotely, and GPS to ensure even cutting cycles and provide an extra layer of anti-theft security. All this earns the Husqvarna 315X our Editors’ Choice for robotic lawn mowers.

Se modellerne i videoen her:

The best robotic lawn mowers for 2023

Like the look of robotic lawn mowers? Browse our pick of the very best, for gardens of all shapes and sizes.

Increasingly popular with UK gardeners, robotic lawn mowers are a welcome, hands-free alternative to traditional petrol and electric lawn mowers. Because a robotic lawn mower is fully automatic, it can be a brilliant option for gardeners who have mobility concerns, are away from home a lot, or simply find mowing a chore. Powered by rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries, most mowers are guided by a boundary cable laid around the edge of the lawn, which helps the robotic lawn mower identify where to mow and to avoid flower beds, trees and other obstacles.

While we tested models from a number of different brands, note that all of them offer a range of mowers with varying sizes, capabilities and features.

Best robotic lawn mowers

Husqvarna Automower 405X

RRP: From £1899.00

Our rating: 4.5 out of 5

  • Unobtrusive colour
  • Easy connectivity
  • Clever mowing features
  • GPS theft tracking

Awarded a BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine Best Buy for features, the Automower 405x boasts a huge range of features that help the mower cut well and make the experience easy for the user. These include, three different start points, switching mowing pattern according to where it’s mowing, such as through a narrow passage, frost guard and weather time that automatically adjusts the height according to the grass growth, and its new Rewilding Zone where you can leave 10% of the lawn aside to grow for pollinators. It’s available to buy as a bare mower, which is then installed by a dealer for an additional cost, or with the installation kit included and you install it yourself. Suitable for smaller gardens 600m2, the mower operates with both a boundary wire and a guide wire and unlike some other mowers, has a more flexible docking station, which doesn’t need a wide, clear space around it. ours was tucked neatly into the side of a hedge. It’s also easy to set up via the intuitive keypad or the impressive Automower Connect app, which allows you to change the schedule, adjust the height of cut, check on the mower’s progress and receive notifications, simply and quickly no matter where you are. As an X model, the mower also has a built in SIM so you have both remote and voice controlled control. Our only confusion with set up was working out the scheduling needed, which took a couple of weeks to establish, and that the height of cut on the app is listed as 1-9, when it cuts between 20mm and 50mm.The mower can cope with 40% slopes, which should suit most gardens. The slope in our test garden has a tendency to get muddy and slippery so at the installer’s advice, we used the spiked Terrain wheels which stop the wheels slipping. Only occasionally did the mower fail to get up the slope and when the weather was really wet we simply removed that zone from the work area. The mower cut consistently well and is very quiet, the only perceptible sound is the whirring of the blades as they cut. It occasionally missed spots on the lawn but overall this is a very easy to use and high performing mower. The Automower 405x is just one in a large range of Husqvarna mowers to suit different size lawns. A host of accessories are also available, including a cover for the docking station and wheel brushes, as well as spare parts, from batteries and blades to wheels. Both the mower and the battery come with a 2 year warranty.
