Lawn mower alternator generator. DIY Lawn Mower Generator

DIY Lawn Mower Generator

Although I prefer and often recommend free renewable energy resources such as the diy solar power generator and the diy washing machine generator, I know at the end of the day that we all different preferances. Today, I wanted to share this idea for a diy lawn mower generator, I saw online with you.

This project is a lot more technical than most of the other stuff I share with you guys. If and when I decide to take this on, I will definetly enlist the help of the hubby, or even a few other family and friends. I have a younger brother who is good with electrical stuff, so we will probably wait for when he pays us a visit.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

The first thing you have to build is the frame that your generator will sit on. If you use the right tools and materials, this should not take you too long to build using the aluminum sheets and the L bars. Make sure you use an engine with a slotted shaft, remebering to remove the cutting blade as well as giving the engine a nice clean.

Next the alternator, followed by your convertor will be added to the frame before you attach your variable resistor and your main power switch. It is very important that you pay attention to the wiring otherwise your generator may not work well. The pulley and the belt are the last things that go onto your generator assembly.

You can follow step by step instructions on Instructables, here…

DIY project. AC Generator 2kw from lawn mower engine

Joined 28 Jul 2015 Messages 2,212 Reaction score 488 Country

Is there anyone who could help me with this little project please?

Mates allotment has been robbed and their generator (2Kw) has been stolen, which they use to power a water pump from a bore-hole.

Turns out they have a lawn mower or rotavator that wasn’t taken, presumably due to weight and not being worth much, both working, but not used.

I was having a look around and stumbled on this:

It converts evo engines to be able to run 240v items. would this fit any single piston 4 stroke engine? The engine on the rotavator looks like the evolution engine. it’s a 6.5Hp, 4 stroke jobby,

I don’t know much about engines, so thought I’d ask you guys.

Obviously this is a money saving option if they can butcher the engine from machines they currently have.

There could be a problem. It maybe that the generator has to be able to adjust the throttle on the 4 stroke to control the rotational speed within the limits of the generator.

This system uses one power unit to drive a variety of accessories. generator, water pump, pressure washer etc. It’s quite a good system that works better in theory than practice, I’ve found. (I’ll justify this by saying that the generator only put out 220v which wasn’t enough. on the one I repaired). The motor has clips / cam locks that connect it to the accessories so it is effectively direct drive. To fit this to a mower engine (although 6 HP is enough) would require significant alteration to the engine crankshaft and end plate, maybe even conversion to using a pulley drive system which would be a pain. It’s very important that the generator is set to provide the correct voltage at the specified RPM. any increase in RPM would damage some accessories, especially battery charging. I’d go for a genuine replacement generator, with a Briggs or Honda engine if possible. though some of the Chinese copies (Loncin) are actually quite good! John

Excellent replies, many thanks.

I see the issues as pointed out in your posts.

A suitcase generator would probably be better suited, as it could be removed. Although someone has to carry it around.

The suit case generators are very good and quiet. especially the Honda ones but they cost a fortune. Occasionally Lidl stock their own Parkside make but whatever happens, steer away from two stroke machines if you can! John

Is there maybe an alternative to electric powered pumping ? A small wind powered mechanical pump may be an option, with a water storage butt the pump could be left to run as and when there was wind,

How to Build a 12Volt Portable Generator

Powerful electrical generators work to send electrical power across power grid distributions throughout neighborhoods and cities. The same way these generators harness their power, you can make your own electrical generator which you can then use to power other items like batteries or circuits.

lawn, mower, alternator, generator

You can even build your own 12 V (12 volt) circuit as a battery backup in case your house lighting or other electronic devices lose power. To build one, you need automotive alternators and batteries with 12 V lights.

Building a 12 V Generator

Alternators and generators both use electromagnetic induction to generate power. Generators in cars and other vehicles use a pulley connected to a drive shaft such that the pulley coils wire around in a circular direction to create a magnetic field that produces a current.

The coil, called an armature, creates electricity that the vehicle uses, and while generators produce DC power, alternators on the other hand produce AC power using a rotating magnet instead of a rotating coil. You can even use your vehicle’s alternator for generator power alongside extra wires such as jumper cables and other devices that may be necessary.

lawn, mower, alternator, generator

Look for older designs of alternators that have been used in vehicles or a gas powered engine from a lawn mower. These alternators are generally built with internal regulators to change the firing rate for more customization and easier installation. Use a socket and ratchet or a wrench to remove the alternator from the vehicle or mower. (Keep the retaining bolts and other parts you remove if you plan on placing the alternator back!)

Then, connect the device you want to power to the 12 V battery. Use the largest terminal that you find on the alternator as the positive end of the battery. The negative terminal depends on the design of the alternator so make sure you can run tests to figure out which end is negative. If you find only two terminals on the automobile’s alternator, it typically has a regulator built into it for processing the voltage signal.

The circuit you create should energize the regulator when you plug it into the circuit. Three-terminal alternator setups usually mean you have to use an external regulator to connect the alternator to the regulator and connect the regulator to the battery itself. After you have the circuit set up, you can bolt the alternator.

Homemade Battery Charger From Alternator

If you want to, you can bolt the alternator down to another surface so that it remains securely in place by re-using the bolts or using your own bolts. Add a pulley to the shaft of the gas motor so that the alternator drives through a belt to generate power or you can use the pulley that was built-in with the alternator. If there is a split rush bushing the alternators uses to fill space, you need to tap on the bushing to let it fit back into the bracket. You can move the bushing more easily with drift punches or a long bolt with a nut in one end of it.

Make sure your alternator setup is clean. If the terminals of the alternator show signs of corrosion, you may experience large drops in voltage. This is what causes alternators in cars to fail in many cases. To clean an alternator, use a mixture with a dilute amount of shelf degreaser in water, and apply the liquid with a cloth or spray.

Let the cleaner soak on the alternator material for about five minutes, and then use a soft, short-bristled brush to clean areas that are dirty due to corrosion. Don’t use petroleum-based degreasers, compressed air or a pressure washer. Make sure not to spray directly into the air inlet openings of the alternator.

If you want a homemade wind generator using a car alternator setup, you can place the alternator and the setup alongside it in a windy area or apply a large amount of wind to it to see if it generates power. Other possible sources of energy include a paddle that you can connect to the alternator so you can harness the power of moving water. Connect a battery charger and batteries to it to see if the batteries recharge. Use a multimeter or voltmeter to measure the voltage to see if you can achieve 12 volts.

Convert Car Alternator to Wind Generator

Aside from a homemade battery charger from an alternator setup, you can use the generator to power refrigerators, stoves or other electronic appliances in your house. Though it won’t be a free energy alternator system as you’ll have to use source of power, you can measure how much voltage there is in these processes using a multimeter or voltmeter. To create a wind generator, in addition, you should apply the car alternator in a specific way.

You can use a fan clutch from a vehicle as a wind generator for your alternator-generator setup. Attach the blades of the fan clutch to the alternator itself so that the alternator’s fan lines up with the shaft of the alternator. Check to ensure the alternator-generator’s built-in wires and additional plugins are on the bottom of the generator.

You can generally accomplish this step using a 5/8-inch-by-3-inch washer that are about 3/16 inch thick, an electric drill, a 1/4-inch thread tap, a drill bit and four sets of 1/4-inch-by-1-1/2-inch to 2-1/2-inch bolts, nuts and lock washers.

The blades for the wind generator are repurposed from a vehicle fan clutch. To attach the blades to the alternator, you can weld the fan clutch hub directly to the alternator hub – just make certain the fan is perfectly in line with the alternator shaft. Also, make sure the alternator’s built-in wire plug-ins are located on what will be the bottom of the generator. If you don’t have access to a welder, you can connect the fan clutch to the alternator using the following materials:

If you connect a wind turbine engine to a car alternator, you need to make sure the setup can withstand the strength of the winds themselves. Bolting the alternator down to a secure piece of metal or other material to keep it stable can make sure it works efficiently and effectively. If you need to take the parts of the alternator setup apart later, make sure you’re able to do so with screws and bolts you use to fasten the alternator-generator down.

Using the Alternator-Generator System

You can use the parts and steps of this method to create other forms of generators and power sources for other purposes such as entire houses, electric-powered boats or other uses in which you don’t have power immediately available to you.

You can experiment with a variety of alternator-like power sources such as lawn mower engines, car batteries or other generators that make use of engine pulleys to power other objects. Make sure you have the wrenches, drills, belts, screwdrivers, ratchets and other equipment necessary.

The 12 V system is common to other sources of electrical power. Solar and wind power sources can create 12-volt systems for off-grid cabins that you can manipulate with charge controllers. This homemade wind generator using a car alternator setup and other alternator-generator systems can save you money by reusing energy through these methods.

What’s the Difference Between an Inverter and a Generator?

The difference between an inverter and a generator might not be a massive one. After all, both accomplish the same task: they both burn fuel, which powers a motor that’s attached to an alternator, which then produces electrical power. But there are a few distinctions between the two in how they accomplish that job. Depending on your needs, it’s likely that one will work better for you than the other.

Size and Weight Differences Between an Inverter and a Generator

Generators, helpful as they are, aren’t necessarily the most sophisticated of portable powering solutions. Essentially, you’ve got a large engine encased in a metal roll cage. Hopefully, you also have wheels attached. Add it all up, and your standard generator can get pretty heavy and cumbersome.

Contrast that with the more recently-popular inverters. Because the inverter’s digital electronic alternator is usually combined with the engine’s flywheel, they have the tendency to weigh a lot less and take up less space. Therefore, the most visible difference between an inverter and a generator is that the former is more easily portable.

lawn, mower, alternator, generator

Power Quality and Output in Generators

Generators work pretty simply. The motor turns the alternator, which produces raw AC power. This brand of AC power might not be the “cleanest” power in the world, but there is a constant supply of a lot of it, whether you need it all or not.

You see, with a generator, the engine has to run at a constant rpm to generate electricity (typically 3600 RPM). This consistent speed produces consistent sound levels as well. This feels like a roundabout way of saying that your average generator typically runs pretty loud. Because the generator runs at this constant intensity, it’s easy to see where they might not be so fuel efficient.

Having said that, generators have a much larger power output range than an inverter. They can push anywhere between 500W to 50,000W. Also, since they typically have large fuel tanks, generators can run for longer periods of time before needing more fuel.

Power Quality and Output in Inverters

Inverters operate with a bit more sophistication. Rather than running at a constant rate, the inverter can match its speed with the demands of the application. This variable speed results in much better fuel efficiency. With the slower speeds and mufflers in place, the inverter tends to run much more quietly than a generator.

We can also see a difference in power quality. An inverter produces AC power through a digital electronic alternator. This, in turn, gets sent to a rectifier that changes it to DC current. It then travels through an inverter that flips it back to AC current. This produces “cleaner” power with less than 5% harmonic distortion. That kind of power is comparable, if not actually better than, the 120V you get from your wall outlets at home. As a result, your inverter provides better power for charging and powering sensitive electronics like phones and computers.

The problem with your typical inverter, however, is that they don’t output all that much power. A typical range of 1000W – 4,000W will probably power a tool or two, a TV, or a handful of appliances. You probably won’t find too many inverters that can run a jobsite or power your home in an emergency. You can, however, often take two identical units and parallel them together—doubling the watts out.

Inverter vs Generator – Which Costs ?

As a general rule, an inverter carries a higher price tag than a comparable generator. For the many reasons given above, inverters simply use more technology. The compact nature of these devices and their additional capabilities and clean power come at a cost—literally.

As a random example, take the Ryobi 2300-watt digital inverter. You get 1800 running watts with some Bluetooth connectivity and additional tech features for 699. If you just need raw power, you could pick up an All Power generator with 2500 running watts for 449.

and more manufacturers are adding inverter technology to their generators. This makes them smarter and cleaner—but definitely raises the price somewhat.

Final Thoughts

Which is right for you, the generator or the inverter? It depends on two things: your budget and your power needs.

Inverters are definitely more expensive due to their high-level electronics. But if you’ve got the funds and you don’t need mass amounts of power, this is the quieter, cleaner option. It’s great for tailgating and some camping applications as it’s highly portable, but most Pros need more power for the job site.

If money is tighter or you need a metric butt-ton of power, stick to your standard, tried-and-true generator. It’s more cumbersome and definitely louder, but it has more raw power. Plus, if you’ve got a big enough generator, you can use it on the job or as emergency power the next time the storm knocks out your power.
