Cut Tile Hacksaw

Table of contents:

There are many ways and tools for cutting tiles: manual and electric tile cutters, angle grinder, hole saw (in the form of a nozzle for a drill), glass cutter, wire cutters, hacksaw for metal, manual tile cutter. Before embarking on wall or floor cladding, it is necessary to decide what is the best way to cut ceramic tiles.

Glass cutter

This is a hand tool that is convenient to use for small amounts of work. Glass cutter can be cut quickly, but its use with large volumes of work is not rational.

It is also unsuitable for working with porcelain stoneware.

Manual tile cutter

This tool is the most practical for cutting facing material. The tile is installed in the device, after which the carriage with the cutting device is manually driven. As a result, the material is cut into pre-marked parts.

Manual tile cutter is easy to use, with it you can quickly complete the work. The cost of such a device is not high. It is worth noting that this tool does not allow cutting strips of less than 5 mm: in this case, it is necessary to further process the edge of the tile to eliminate all the bumps that cannot be avoided.

In the process of working with a manual tile cutter, the cutting line must be marked with a marker, and then combine it with the wheel. The tile needs to be fixed with one hand, and with the other hand, holding on to a special handle, with a light touch, stretch the wheel in the direction “towards you”.

The passage with the wheel is performed only once: this is necessary to obtain a high-quality cut.

The tile is separated using special “wings”: they are installed below the middle of the tile at the base of the handle, which is pressed by the hand with a moderately sharp movement. As a result, the tile is divided into parts. Sharp corners, if necessary, are squeezed by an emery wheel.

Electric tile cutter

An electric tile cutter allows you to get perfectly straight slices with rounded and smooth edges: this distinguishes this tool from simpler tile cutters. Other advantages: the ability to perform figured cutting, with its help it is possible to cut fragments less than 5 mm wide, and also work with material of any hardness (including porcelain stoneware). In addition, when working with the electric cutter, dust is not generated: it, together with small pieces of ceramics, settles in a tank of water.

The disadvantages of this tool: high cost and the need for safety. In addition, the water in the pan must be changed periodically, otherwise the blade becomes dull.

The principle of operation of this tool is as follows: the cutting disk is wetted by the water supplied to it, so that the dust does not soar in the air, and the diamond disk works in more gentle conditions. In this case, the tile moves under a rotating knife with a force depending on the properties of the ceramic and the characteristics of the blade. The tile, in order to avoid its destruction from vibration and jamming of the blade, is fixed on the desktop.

When working with this tool, goggles, gloves (gloves) should be used, and precautions should be taken when handling cutting edges.

Angle Grinder

Using an angle grinder, you can perform both direct cutting and curly cutting. However, the edges of the slices will be uneven with serrated edges. In this regard, cutting with an angle grinder can be performed only if an uneven edge is subsequently hidden (under the sill or under the baseboard). In the role of a “rough” tool, an angle grinder with a diamond disk is very convenient: there is no need to prepare the tile, it does not require the use of water. But it should be borne in mind that when cutting an angle grinder, a lot of dust and small fragments are formed, therefore goggles are strictly required. Headphones and work gloves are also needed.

Nippers

This tool is used to roughly adjust the material to the required size, to eliminate uncut sharp corners and edges after using another cutting tool. Nippers can give the tile any, even absolutely round shape. Advantages of nippers. low cost and ease of handling, disadvantage. leaves rough edges that need to be trimmed on an emery wheel. In this regard, nippers are used only as an auxiliary tool.

Hole Saw

The hole saw is equipped with a carbide tip and is intended for cutting holes in ceramics, natural and artificial stone. The tool is indispensable for cutting holes for water pipes, can cut both soft and hard tiles. The disadvantages of the tool include the fact that to obtain a hole requires a lot of time and heating the tiles to high temperatures.

Diamond (carbide) string

It is used for curly cutting ceramic tiles. It is fixed in a conventional hacksaw for metal. Only a wall tile can be cut with such a string, since the floor tile has high hardness, which will lead to the destruction of cutting spraying. Advantages of this device: the possibility of obtaining a curly cut of any shape with relatively even edges. The disadvantage is a short service life and difficulty in handling: with sharp jerks during operation, enamel can be chipped on the front side of the tile.
