Do you see an ‘E4’ error code on your portable or mini split air conditioner? If so, you are in the right place.

In this guide, we will tell you how to troubleshoot an E4 error code and answer questions like:

  • What should you do if your air conditioner displays an error code?
  • Is it dangerous to use your air conditioning if it shows an error code?
  • Do you need to maintain your portable air conditioner or mini-split?
  • How can you properly maintain your air conditioner to avoid malfunctions?

AC error codes are concerning, but most are easy to address with the tips below. So, let’s get into it.

What Is An E4 Error Code?

Technically, the E4 error is not an error at all. It actually tells you, your unit is going into defrost mode. That does, however, mean that something has caused your unit to get too cold. A broken temperature sensor can also cause your AC to enter defrost mode.

What Causes An AC To Go Into Defrost Mode?

There are many reasons your air conditioner may go into defrost mode. Here are the most common causes.

electric, lawn, mower, capacitor, error, conditioner

How To Check & Replace An Air Conditioner Capacitor

  • Low freon
  • A broken heat pump
  • High pressure or low pressure
  • It is too cold to run your AC
  • There is a broken outdoor ambient temperature sensor or indoor temperature sensor

You would think all manufacturers would use the same codes to make it easier for repair contractors and consumers, but that is not the case. So, the above are troubleshooting tips you can use on any unit. You can also find a qualified HVAC technician to solve the problem for you.

Do Air Conditioner Error Codes Differ By Manufacturer Or Type?

However, for the most part, the E4 error code means that the unit is entering defrost mode. You will hear a difference in the fan speed when your unit changes. When the fan motor slows, it sounds like the unit performs as an air purifier or dehumidifier. It basically just passes air over the unit without cooling it.

What Do Other Error Codes Mean?

It helps to have a reference for some of the most common error codes. So, here is a list of some that you may encounter. Print it out or bookmark this page, so you do not have to search Google the next time you have a question about AC error codes.

F1, F2, And F3 Error Codes

If you see any number proceeded by an ‘F,’ it is not an error code. It is simply telling you that the unit is in fan mode. The number following tells you what speed it is on.

E Error Codes

Each E error code means something different. Some signify an issue with a specific component, while others tell you that the unit changed modes. E1 Error Code – There is a room temperature malfunction. E2 Error Code – A short in the indoor pipe sensor E3 Error Code – An indoor fan speed problem likely attributed to a malfunctioning indoor circuit board or indoor fan motor. E5 Error Code – The water collection plate is full E6 Error Code – A disconnect between the indoor and outdoor units possibly caused by low voltage or an open circuit. E7 Error Code – The indoor and outdoor units are not working in sync. E8 Error Code – Occurs sometimes in high heat or humidity. E9 Error Code – A loose connection on the outside unit. Keep in mind, manufacturers use different codes, and there are error codes for discharge temperature, room-temperature sensor, inverter, PCB, and other malfunctions. These codes may not indicate your specific issue. It is always best to check your manual, but these are a good place to start if you do not have access to it. Run Capacitor

I received this question the other day and thought it was a great question and worth a blog post.

Question: Can someone explain me what is the function of the start and run capacitor used for motors?

Answer: I’m not an expert, but after doing some reading here is what I found. I hope it helps.

The start capacitor provides that electrical push to get the motor rotation started. It does this by creating a current to voltage lag in the separate start windings of the motor.

It is a component that stores an electrical charge and then releases it. Capacitors are most often used to start motors, and compressors and can be found in central air conditioners and furnace, as well as other heating and cooling devices. Capacitors are also used in refrigerators and washing machines.

Since this current builds up slower, the armature has time to react to the rotating field as it builds up, and to begin rotating with the field.

Once the motor is very close to it’s rated speed, a centrifugal switch disconnects the start cap and start windings from the circuit.

Most smaller, single phase motors usually have a permanent magnet armature that is pushed / pulled around by the rotating inductive field produced by the stator (outside) windings.

According to capacitorformotor.com/run_capacitor.html the inductive field rotates as a result of the positive / negative alternations of the 60HZ AC current flowing through the windings.

McCombs Supply has several start capacitors, including part number SPP5.

Interesting note: Without a start capacitor, like when one burns up, when the voltage is applied, the motor will just sit and hum. But if you were to grab the shaft and give it a spin, the motor would (usually) start and run normally.

What is a run capacitor?

A motor run capacitor is used to continuously adjust current or phase shift to a motor’s windings in an effort to optimize the motors torque and efficiency performance.

McCombs Supply has several run capacitors to choose, including part number POCD403.

How to Select a Motor Run Capacitor

Voltage: Select a capacitor with a voltage rating at or above the original capacitor. If you’re using a 370 volt capacitor, a 370 or 440 volt capacitor will work, according to the website for TEMCo industrial Power Supply.

Round or Oval? Round capacitors are by far the most common, but many motors still use oval designs. Electrically speaking, there is no difference. Fit is the only question here. If space in the mounting box is not limited, the case style does not matter.

Here is a capacitor training video.

Capacitors are used to store electric charge. Most capacitors sold here at McCombs Supply are manufactured under the Packard, Titan PRO™ and Supco brands.

Helpful tips

  • When device receives too much electricity, the capacitor will burst. When a capacitor fails, you will usually notice a bubble in the housing. When it fails you will often see a bulge or leak.
  • Capacitors hold an electrical charge. To avoid being electrocuted, it is important to discharge the capacitor before handling it. To discharge a capacitor, with the appliance unplugged, use a metal screw driver with an insulated handle to short across the terminals of the capacitor.
  • It is important to discharge a capacitor. If this is not done there can be strong jolt of electricity. Here is how you discharge a capacitor. This link by wikihow.com shows you 5 steps for discharging a capacitor.

Here is an video illustrating how to discharge a capacitor.

McCombs Supply has a variety of capacitors to choose from like the 17.5-440R. When ordering a capacitor, know the microfarad and volts for your capacitor.

You will find on the McCombs Supply website run capacitors ranging from 2mfd through 100mfd in 370 and 440 volts. Both round and oval in shape. Start capacitors range from 21mfd through 1000mfd in 125, 165, 250 and 330 volts. All start capacitors are round in shape and have a plastic housing.

Capacitor Tester

We also have the following capacitor testers for sale. Both are battery operated.

Supco MFD10 Digital Capacitor Tester, Ranges from.01. 10000 mfd’s. It sells for 61.20.

The second tester McCombs offers is the Packard CT1 Digital Capacitor Tester, Ranges from 20 MF to 200PF.

Here is a video on testing a capacitor.

Is it time to replace your Motor Run Capacitor?

As a general rule, a motor run capacitor will out last the same motor’s start capacitor.

It will also fail or wear differently, making it slightly more involving when trying to determine if it’s time to replace it. Start capacitors will commonly fail completely, making the decision on when to replace obvious, limiting time spent troubleshooting.

The pros and cons of electric lawn mowers

Electric lawn mowers have arrived. We lay out the pros and cons of these green yard machines.

Sean Jackson is a creative copywriter living in Florida. He’s had work published with Realtor.com, theScore, ESPN, and the San Francisco Chronicle. In his free time, Sean likes to play drums, fail miserably at improv and spend time at the beach.

Once upon a time, all lawn mowers were gas-burning beasts whose pull-start motors relied as much on elbow grease as internal combustion just to get started. These days you have more options. While big-box stores still have plenty of gas-powered models on display, there’s a growing number of electric mowers available to purchase.

If you’re new to electric lawn mowers, there are some things you should consider before buying one. Electric mowers certainly offer some unique benefits, but they have some performance limitations you will want to be aware of too.

This guide examines both the benefits and drawbacks of electric mowers. By the time you’re done, you’ll hopefully have a sense of whether or not they’re a suitable fit for your specific lawn care needs.

Pro: Quieter operation

Electric mowers can produce up to 75 decibels (think washing machine volume), whereas gasoline mowers are quite a bit louder at 95 decibels (motorcycle volume). If you live in a suburb, an electric mower will be a less disrupting option for your neighbors.

electric, lawn, mower, capacitor, error, conditioner

Pro: Less maintenance

One of the biggest perks of electric mowers is there is less maintenance involved. With gas mowers, you have to replace parts annually. Examples are spark plugs, oil and air filters. That’s not the case with electric mowers. And these savings will increase every year, making an electric model more economical.

Pro: Easier to maneuver

Electric lawn mowers are lighter than their gas powered siblings. That means they’re easier to whip around tight corners and navigate through your yard. For example, the EGO Power Plus 56-Volt 21-in Push Cordless Electric Lawn Mower weighs 62.6 pounds after assembly.

Conversely, gasoline lawn mowers can be much heavier. The Craftsman M250 160-cc 21-in Self-Propelled Gas Push Lawn Mower with Honda Engine weighs a hefty 90 pounds. While the self-propelled engine improves maneuverability when you mow, it is still a heavy object to lug around when it is not in operation.

Pro: Cleaner for the environment

Gasoline-powered mowers emit lots of airborne pollutants. According to the California Air Resources Board, one hour of mowing generates the same pollution as driving a car for 300 miles. Indeed, the Environmental Protection Agency states that gas lawn mowers contribute the lion’s share of nonroad-related air pollution generated nationwide.

A clear clean alternative is the electric lawnmower. The Electric Power Research Institute notes if we replaced half the gas-powered lawn mowers with electric ones, it would reduce the same amount of emissions as removing two million vehicles from the road.

Pro: They can be less expensive

If you are looking to save money, electric lawn mowers might be a wise option to consider. Electric models start as low as 88, the price for the 11-inch, 10-amp Electric Hover Walk Behind Push Mower from Sun Joe. However, this model has a relatively narrow cutting width.

Alternatively, for gas-powered mowers tend to start at around 170. For example, the Yardmax 20-inch 166cc OHV Gas Walk Behind Push Mower and 20-inch 125 cc Briggs Stratton Gas Walk Behind models each cost 169 and cut wider swaths of grass.

So saving a little cash also means you’ll take more time and effort to cut the same area than you would with a bigger mower. Generally, the wider the cutting platform, the more money you’ll pay. For instance, the wider Sun Joe Mow Joe 20-inch model will set you back 170 even though it’s an electric model.

Con: Shorter run times

If your yard is more than half an acre, then an electric model might not be the best choice. Many electric mowers, like the Sun Joe Hover Walk Behind model use a cord. It allows you to mow a yard up to a quarter of an acre. However, that tether can also be a hindrance as you work.

Other electric models run on charged batteries and offer runtimes ranging between 20 and 45 minutes. If it takes longer than this to mow your yard, this limitation is a problem. To finish the job, you’ll have to wait for the mower to recharge. A better solution is to keep another charged battery on hand to extend your mowing time. However, that requires you purchase an extra standalone battery.

Con: Not the best for larger yards

For homeowners with hilly or larger yards, finding the right mower can be a challenge. A riding lawn mower like the gas-powered Toro IronForged Deck Zero Turn Riding Lawn Mower will do the job. It has a huge cutting width of 60 inches and will definitely finish big yards quicker.

You can purchase electric riding mowers as well. The Ryobi 42-inch 75ah Battery Electric Riding Zero Turn Mower offers a decent cutting width of 42 inches. Still, if you have a yard encompassing multiple acres, it will take you longer to finish the job with an electric model like this one.

Con: They are not as powerful

When shopping for a mower, one thing to consider is its torque rating. Torque is the driving force behind a blade’s rotational movement. Electric lawn mowers generate substantially less torque on average than a gas mower does. It means a gas mower will be a much better choice to tackle challenging terrains like hills and dips.

Overall, the lawn mower market continues to expand with diverse offerings. For homeowners with larger yards, gas-powered mowers will still be the best fit, as they have the durability and power to tackle large projects with ease.

Meanwhile, if you want to reduce your carbon footprint, then an electric lawn mower is the wise way to go. Either route you take can help you gain a healthy-looking lawn that boosts the curb appeal and value of your home.
