How to Drill a Hacksaw

How to Drill a Hacksaw

Saw is one of the oldest instruments used by man. Today’s variety is amazing to the customer.

Taking a hacksaw in your hands, you can appreciate the convenience of the handle. However, it is unlikely that they will offer you a “test drive”. that is, they will not be able to test the tool in business.

Existing types of hacksaws

To understand which hacksaw for wood is best for you, consider its structure and types

Everything is simple with the design. the tool consists of a cutting blade and a handle. over, these two elements can be connected rigidly or pivotally, change the angle of the connection, or even form a folding mechanism.

Hacksaws with interchangeable blades are widespread. This allows you to get a whole set for various purposes, saving at least on the handles.

This applies to comfort and profitability. The main types of hacksaws differ in the following parameters:

Type of web

By comparing the two hacksaws for cut quality, you can determine which is better.

The narrow strip is designed to work in confined spaces (for example, pruning branches), through cuts and to perform curly cuts

It is convenient to cut a small bar with such a tool, cut a large diameter hole in thin plywood, and perform gardening.

Performance is low, so with large volumes it’s quite tiring to work. A serious drawback is that with a long cut (for example, on a flat blank of a large area), it is difficult to maintain straightness. The canvas will go to the side.

Standard parameters. Wide web is the most common (and universal) option. Allows you to work productively, providing a fairly straight cut

The only drawback is the bulky tool. It is inconvenient to store and you cannot perform work in cramped conditions.

Canvas with stiffener (edge). Designed for perfectly even cut, for example, in the manufacture of furniture

A stiffener is located on the upper (non-working) part, which prevents the elastic bending of the web. The disadvantage of this solution is that the depth of cut is limited by the width of the blade. There is no possibility to saw at an angle of 45 °, only parallel to the plane of the workpiece.

  • Canvas for bow saws. The fundamental difference is that the mounting is not cantilevered, but along the edges, the tension is ensured by the elasticity of the frame.
  • Advantage. adjustable web tension, the ability to cut curly holes. The disadvantage is the bulkiness of the structure, restrictions on the depth of cut and cut at an angle.

    Blade length

There is no universal option. You can’t cut a lot with a short blade, the worker will tire quickly. But you can crawl into hard to reach places. A long blade is more productive, but with precise work it is difficult to control the spring properties. the cut will be uneven.

General rule: The length of the blade should be equal to the double thickness of the largest workpiece for hacksaws of this class.

The working part measuring 20-40 cm is designed for cutting slats, small boards and cutting curly holes. Such hacksaws are used for gardening. Hacksaws are compact and comfortable, but large amounts of work cannot be done with them.

  • Cloths with a length of 45-70 cm are designed to perform high-grade tasks with high productivity. At the same time, for accurate work, the presence of a pick is required, a long canvas "plays" during movement.
  • Material of a working cloth

Steel for hacksaw wood should have a hardness of 45 HRC. Such a material retains the elasticity of the canvas, and does not blunt so quickly. Teeths with a hardness of 45 HRC can be sharpened.

Many manufacturers produce canvases with combined zakal-koy. The entire blade has a hardness of 45 and teeth 60 HRC. The canvas remains flexible (does not break), and the teeth remain sharp for the entire life cycle. At home, hardened teeth cannot be sharpened and it is undesirable to breed.

    Tooth shape

One of the fundamental parameters, since the purpose of the hacksaw depends on the shape of the cutting elements.

Traditional types of sharpening for solid wood:

    The teeth have a sharp working angle, 40 °. 50 °

The leading edge has a reverse inclination. Such a hacksaw cuts well along the fibers. Each tooth has two working surfaces, thanks to hook hooks, raw sawdust is well removed from the cavity of the cut.

The teeth are shaped like isosceles triangles.

Rather, even an equilateral triangle. Sharpening is symmetrical on both sides. Between cutting edges 60 °.70 °. Such a canvas quickly bites into the wood, breaking the fibers.

Sawdust removal is not very effective, but since they are not large, the cut is cleaned quickly. The only limitation is that such a saw works well only on dry material.

Wet fibers saturated with wood juices quickly clog the cavities between the teeth. The hacksaw has to be taken out of the cut and cleaned with a brush.

    Universal canvas

The leading edge of the teeth is perpendicular to the direction of movement. Sharpening on both sides. Allows tolerably working both along and across the fibers. It does not work out 100% for any cut, but allows you to save on the purchase of two copies.

If you work a lot with one type of cut. buy a specialized tool, versatility is suitable for small volumes.

How to choose a hacksaw for wood with the correct sharpening, if you still do not know what you will be sawing?

The best hacksaws for wood have several types of teeth on the canvas. The purchase rating showed that customers most often choose multifunctional canvases.

Some teeth work across the fibers, the second along. Grooves between the groups lead raw sawdust. For home use. the best option, unless you make furniture. For these purposes, there is a special grinding of teeth, which allows you to make a smooth cut, without chipping.

The same goes for plywood or chipboard cutting. Any processed wood (not solid wood) is poorly sawn with standard canvases. For such work, teeth of a special shape have also been developed.

There is also an exotic option. Japanese hacksaws. They generally go beyond the usual understanding. The teeth are sharpened as for a universal blade, however, the direction of movement is toward itself. Japanese masters believe that this is more convenient. And for our mentality, perhaps cut down branches in the garden.

The hacksaw rating will be incomplete unless we discuss the handles. In this category, it makes no sense to advise, everyone chooses according to his own hand. And yet there is one recommendation:
Choose a handle with a removable mounting angle. In addition, this design allows you to change the canvas.

    Total:
You received theoretical recommendations: size, tooth sharpening. you select these parameters according to the type of work. But the handle can be selected only by holding the hacksaw in his hand.
