How To Make A Chainsaw Silent

Chainsaw muffler: how to make the tool silent?

The chainsaw is one of the most common tools used to cut trees and large bushes. And if there are ways to save your eyes and face from flying out small saws, then what to do with your ears? Chainsaw is very loud and can damage your ears even with short-term use. Especially if it’s a gas-powered chainsaw. So that you can work more safely with this tool, we suggest you make your own muffler for your chainsaw using the guide below.

Why do you need a muffler

Prolonged exposure to extremely loud noises is undoubtedly dangerous and can lead to hearing loss. Chainsaws can be very loud, ranging from 80 to 120 decibels. In comparison, normal conversation averages around 60 decibels.

Let’s take a look at some data and time frames:

  • Sounds up to 70 dB are safe and you can listen to them for extended periods of time.
  • 85db sounds are dangerous if you listen to them for more than 8 hours.
  • Sounds at 111 dB are extremely dangerous and can cause hearing loss in less than a minute.
  • Sounds of about 200 dB are fatal.

Interestingly, the loud noise from chainsaws is not just dangerous for your ears. Loud noises pose an even greater health risk. They can lead to:

  • Upset stomach;
  • High blood pressure;
  • Increase in heart rate.

Why does the chainsaw make noise?

There are several different reasons why chainsaws are so loud. These 3 factors create the most noise:

  • Engine / motor;
  • Sawing;
  • Vibrations.

You’ve probably already guessed that the engine is the main culprit in noise. This is why gas chainsaws are so loud compared to others, as their engines make the most noise on average.

The cutting process will also add to the noise generated by the chainsaw. A chainsaw with an old chain that is no longer sharp and properly lubricated can potentially lead to higher noise levels.

Vibrations, although to a much lesser extent, will also increase the overall noise level. One of the reasons electric and cordless chainsaws are much quieter is that they will generate less vibration.

How to make a muffler for a chainsaw with your own hands

To reduce the noise from your chainsaw, you can try making and installing a muffler yourself. To do this, you will need:

  • 1mm stainless steel;
  • Piece of metal;
  • Angle Grinder;
  • Pliers;
  • Screwdriver and drills.

What should be done:

  • Make 2 stainless steel tubes. The first one in diameter must be made so that it fits into the factory muffler. And the second is a couple of centimeters larger than the first.
  • Drill holes in the first tube in any order, but with a distance of at least 5 mm from each other.
  • Tightly wrap the first pipe with metal steel so that exhaust gases cannot destroy the constructed structure.
  • Slide the second tube onto the perforated first tube. To keep them well secured, insert self-tapping screws.
  • At the end, weld the end of the steel washer for tightness.

Such a homemade muffler will reduce the noise from the chainsaw by an average of 25-35%. Of course, you can use other ways to reduce the volume of the chainsaw, both homemade and purchased, but in practice they are not as effective as a steel homemade muffler.

Required materials and tools

In standard cutting products, the exhaust system is kept as short as possible. This decision is made to achieve the power required to rotate the chain quickly. In order not to degrade the performance of the equipment and make it quieter, a thoughtful and comprehensive approach is needed.

Making a muffler for a chainsaw with your own hands involves the presence of such tools:

  • Roulette;
  • Welding machine;
  • Scissors for metal;
  • Angle Grinder;
  • A hammer;
  • Kern;
  • Marker;
  • Riveter;
  • File;
  • Electric drill;
  • Building hair dryer;
  • Screwdriver.

Depending on the features of the improvements introduced, materials may be required:

  • Sheet stainless steel;
  • Rivets;
  • Bolts;
  • Screws;
  • Basalt refractory cord;
  • Wire;
  • Solid wood for rollers.

To protect hands, skin, eyes and breathing, the following means should be used during work:

  • Respirator;
  • Thick clothing;
  • Mounting gloves;
  • Glasses;
  • Construction helmet.
How To Make A Chainsaw Silent

The design of the tool provides for partial absorption of noise by the body. If there are large gaps in it, they can be repaired with silicone-based mastic. The material will reduce vibration, rattling of plastic and metal.

How to make a chainsaw silent with your own hands

The question of how to make a chainsaw silent with your own hands is asked by almost every owner of a private house or suburban area. The instrument at high speeds creates a loud noise that can be carried for hundreds of meters. Loud sounds annoy the neighbors, and the master himself gets tired of them. Having understood the nature of this phenomenon, you can make the work of the chainsaw quieter, spending a minimum of time and money. The roar is caused by the explosion of gasoline in the cylinders and from the contact of exhaust gases with air. Partial elimination of these factors leads to noise reduction.

Build process

There are several directions for modernizing a chainsaw with your own hands. With the right approach, a homemade exhaust system will operate efficiently without reducing the power of the unit.

The easiest way to get rid of the rumble is to use a flexible plastic duct and a container of water. The hose is screwed to the exhaust pipe through heat-insulating gaskets, its other end is lowered into the water and rigidly fixed to the tank.

Gradually cooling down and losing speed, the exhaust freely leaves the engine. Contact with air is neutralized by water. To make such a muffler for a chainsaw, you will need at least 3 m of flexible pipes and a bucket with a capacity of 10-12 liters. This design is suitable for working on a flat open place without moving around the site. Used for cutting firewood or timber in the yard.

A drop in power from the unit and loud noises at low revs may be caused by a clogged muffler. Exhaust gases pass through the narrowed hole and make a loud rumble. In some cases, the instrument makes loud sounds that resemble gunshots.

You can solve this problem in the following ways:

  • Disassemble the unit in accordance with the attached instructions. Remove the exhaust system, remove carbon deposits from it, wash off solid deposits with thinner or gasoline. Degrease the parts and put in place. The elements do not need lubrication, since it burns out in contact with exhaust gases.
  • Clean the exhaust system mechanically. First, it should be dried with a construction hairdryer, since the sticky substance is poorly cleaned off. Carbon deposits are removed with a hard plastic bristle brush. It is not recommended to use steel fixtures, as they scratch the metal, which leads to accelerated wear of the product.

You can prevent quick muffler clogging by preparing a fuel mixture from high-quality gasoline and oil, which must be mixed in the proportion specified by the manufacturer.

The work is carried out in the following sequence:

  • A template is made for bending pipes from tin. You need to make two blanks. One should be equal to the exhaust port. The second is milled with a section 2-2.5 cm larger. For this purpose, it is better to use fine-grained hardwood.
  • The stainless steel sheet is cut into pieces of the required length and width. They are wrapped around the rollers. This is done using muscle strength and a hammer. To simplify the process, one edge of the workpiece is rigidly attached to the rollers with nails or screws.
  • The edges of the bent pipes are aligned and welded together. On a wide workpiece, the seam is leveled and polished. This is necessary for the safety of the master and giving the product a presentable look. Chainsaw tuning will be incomplete without this.
  • A number of holes with a diameter of 3 mm are drilled in a thin pipe. They can be done in any order with an interval of at least 5 mm.
  • Metal wool, basalt cord and aluminum wire are wound over the drilled workpiece. The fixation must be tight so that the filler is not blown out by gases under pressure.
  • An outer tube is pulled on top of the resulting product. They are fastened with bolts or screws. Front facade is welded with a steel washer.
  • The finished muffler is attached to the exhaust pipe of the chainsaw. It is better to fix it with rivets.

It does not take much time to make such a device, it will cost inexpensively. But the product can serve for several years, it only needs to be periodically cleaned of accumulated carbon deposits.

How to make a muffler for a chainsaw at home

Good day, dear readers, subscribers of Andrey Noak’s Blog. Here recently my neighbor in the country was cutting down trees on his site and harvesting firewood. Naturally used a chainsaw. Although he bought not a professional saw, but a household one, it made a lot of noise. While he was working all the neighbors, including me, were tired of this noise. It was then that the idea came to me, to tell him how to make a muffler for a chainsaw with your own hands.

Why does the chainsaw make noise?

All chainsaws have only one significant drawback. it is noise during operation, which in some places (summer cottages, personal plots) interferes and irritates many people. If the noise from a running saw interferes with concentration, then headphones that suppress the noise are also possible. But everyone around will not walk in headphones while someone is making noise.

It so happens that the chainsaw works normally at low revs, but as soon as the gas is added, it immediately sneezes and stalls. As a rule, the reason is that the exhaust cannot pass through the muffler clogged with smoke and is forced to move in the opposite direction. To do this, it is enough to remove and clean it, if it understands, of course, if not, then you will have to dry it with hot air using a hair dryer.

The most important reason for muffler pollution is excess oil, which is diluted with gasoline and, as a result, settles on its walls.

If you decide to clean a non-collapsible muffler yourself, keep in mind that you cannot do this dry using the same hair dryer, since hazardous substances are extremely harmful to health.

Although most chainsaw manufacturers try to muffle engine noise whenever possible, this does not lead to anything good and primarily affects the power of the device.

Professional chainsaws such as Husqvarna cannot run quietly at all, as the power and rpm are very high, which results in a lot of noise. Trying to muffle the roar of the engine yourself, while maintaining high performance, is extremely difficult. But there are people who use an ordinary bucket of water and a plastic pipe, dipping one end into the water, and screwing the other end to the exhaust pipe. There is efficiency from such actions, the sound of the motor becomes quieter.

We do it ourselves

In order to save money and time spent looking for the right workshops, I advise you to make a muffler at home. It’s not as difficult as it seems at first glance.

All you need is a regular 1mm stainless steel sheet, a smaller diameter iron tube than the muffler, stainless wool, basalt fiber and a little patience.

  • We take a sheet of steel and wrap it around the rollers, as a result we get a round tube, but an oval-shaped pipe will be required. To do this, using welding, we heat and then press down the tube, an oval shape should be obtained;
  • If you have a finished pipe of a suitable diameter, then this is good, if not, then you need to make it using a welding machine. To do this, take a metal sheet, mark the required dimensions and cut by welding. Then we make a pipe, the seam should be thin and without bumps;
  • When the finished pipe is obtained, it is necessary to make as many holes as possible in it, and you can make holes both chaotically and in a strict order, this does not matter;
  • Next, we take the stainless wool prepared in advance and begin to wrap the pipes outside. This is necessary to prevent blowing of the muffler sheathing;
  • Then we wrap it over the stainless wool with basalt fiber (this is the most suitable material) and so that it does not slip, we fasten it with wire, which should be thin and at the same time strong;
  • We insert the wrapped pipe into the future apparatus and wipe all this with sandpaper, pay special attention to the seams and joints so that they do not bulge out much;
  • When you do all this, the resulting unit must be attached to the chainsaw as tightly as possible so that it does not fly off at the right time.

Such a home-made device, if done correctly, will serve for a long time and significantly reduce the noise of the engine, it works well on Druzhba chainsaws. Another plus of a homemade muffler is that it will cost you a meager amount. You will only waste time, but it will be worth it.

You can also use this version of the muffler: put baffles in the pipe, which is in the muffler, and thereby reduce the noise level of the engine. This is due to the fact that the noise itself is a strong vibration of the air that comes out of the muffler at high speed.

In order to reduce the noise of operation, it is enough just to drill holes in the pipe and insert partitions into them at equal distances. There will be many divisions and the gas will gradually go out, while the pressure and noise will decrease. Accordingly, the speed of movement of gases will decrease, which will lead to a decrease in noise.

If you want to make the gases leave the cylinders faster, thereby reducing the engine forces, so that the performance of the saw increases, remember that the noise will be several times greater.

In order to achieve this, a straight-through muffler is needed, which can be made from a pipe according to the sketches of an old muffler by unscrewing and subsequently using all the bolts and nuts.

I advise you to choose a pipe made of steel, then the muffler will last longer. If there is no suitable steel pipe, then it must be made using steel sheet. Using a welding machine, you can make a tube of the required diameter and size.

Everything is already provided for by the plant, everything should work as a whole, and if you try to change something on your own, including improving the muffler without any drawings, then it is quite difficult and not everyone can succeed.

For chainsaws such as the Stihl 180, it is better to buy a native muffler, which you can change yourself and without any problems.

Therefore, if you have certain knowledge and ingenuity works well, then you should try to make an additional muffler yourself, thereby saving money and it may turn out to make such an apparatus that will really make the chainsaw work much quieter and you will not have to constantly quarrel with neighbors or others you people.

Why do you need a muffler

This is a special device, thanks to which the noise from a running engine becomes an order of magnitude lower, but does not completely muffle and this does not suit many.

Of course, saws are now being sold whose silencer is capable of suppressing noise several times, but this immediately affects the operation of the saw.

If you are smart and the same Ural saw can be made to work much quieter and this will not affect its performance in any way.

Quiet your chainsaw

I need a specialist who will make a silencer for calm. I am engaged in the production of wooden houses and when I work 10-12 saws it is a disaster. There are residential buildings 100 meters away and I’m afraid that the residents will soon dislike me, to put it mildly. If anyone can do. I will buy.

We didn’t think about saws?

The craftsmen say that the benzo tool has some kind of recoil, in general it does not get sold

That does not work?

Is there no electro or something

Put a sound-reflecting fence, you can even make a mobile version, but for two-stroke saws (if the saws are still two-stroke, and I, for example, did not have to work with 4-stroke), it is not very easy to chemize something with the exhaust.

Chainsaws already have mufflers. It makes no sense to modify them, i.E. Theoretically, this can be done, but it is difficult to predict how the characteristics of the engine change and whether it will work at all.

I faced similar issues too.

Probably only these options:

Hitman_ii wrote: electro

And perform noisy work only strictly during working hours, so as not to interfere with your neighbors’ sleep, say from 10-00 to 18-00. If this regime is strictly followed, the neighbors will most likely get used to it.

Well, in general, it seems to be nothing complicated. Purely theoretically: We took an ordinary tin can, made holes in it, wrapped it with glass wool and screwed it to the standard glushak with self-tapping screws. But I think the sound will actually decrease by 10 decibels, and in order for it to be completely quiet, the muffler should be like a car. About a sound-reflecting fence is a valid idea. May work.

Flange to cylinder, flange to hose and water canister. It will be like a boat motor. Mobility will really decrease, but.

Hello, and someone was repeating?

I also wanted to throw 10 kopecks, because K. He worked in a car service before, made direct-flow mufflers with bass nozzles for street racers. For those interested: "

Insert type like a winter fishing auger. We made the auger 20 turns and put it in the muffler pipe. The sound did not become quieter, but only changed. Roaring on one note, on the letter: Sch-Sch-Sch-Sch-Sch-Sch-Sch. Like a sandblasting air compressor hose. Wild and unpleasant.

I would choose saws to use them wherever possible, and start benzo when it is impossible to work electro. Saws probably do not roll, because Already bought a bunch of chainsaws, it is also expensive to buy electro. The quietest but immobile option has already been mentioned. a hose into a bucket of water. This is how the lumberjacks-poachers chemistry. If the muffler is in the form of a cube-barrel, then we unscrew 3 bolts (nuts) that stick out of it, take out the plug (or what is inside? Cone?) And put a homemade flange of some thread into 3 holes, to which a hose is connected into a bucket of water. The main thing here is to count: cut out 10-12 of these flanges from the roofing iron with scissors for metal or make 10-12 anti-noise fences By the way, stock up on hoses. rubber ones will quickly burn out, you need something with metal. The shell. And about "the engine will not work normally". look at how Americans have converted 2-stroke chainsaws on aircraft models: just an exhaust pipe and that’s it!
