How to Make a Sander from a Sander

Home-made belt grinding machines made without welding and turning, a detailed description of the manufacture of home-made with a photo.

Belt grinding machine, a thing pretty needed in the home workshop. For its manufacture, turning and welding are required, but not everyone has a welder and a lathe in the garage. Alternatively, a simpler construction can be dispensed with where no turning work is required.

Materials needed:

  • electric motor from the washing machine;
  • motor speed regulator;
  • bearings;
  • piece of chipboard sheet;
  • switch;
  • threaded rod 150 mm long;
  • mounting steel corner;
  • a pair of pieces of polypropylene pipes with a diameter of 20 and 32 mm;
  • screws, nuts, washers.

The following photo shows the manufacturing process of the parts of the grinding machine.

In this homemade product, the engine from the washing machine was used at 14 thousand rpm. We connect it to the network through the speed controller.

This diagram shows the connection of the regulator to the electric motor.

We make the machine body from pieces of chipboard, and fasten it with furniture screws. Its dimensions are determined by the specific engine.

The emphasis for the emery tape is made from the mounting corner, the edges of which are rounded to exclude the hook of the tape lock.

The driving roller is made of two propylene pipes with a diameter of 20 and 32 mm.

We choose a large pipe with an inner diameter of 20 mm.

In addition, we insert a tube curved from tin into the inner hole of the double pipe.

We fill this whole design on the splined motor shaft. The connection turned out reliable with minimal runout.
For the driven roller, we select two bearings and, depending on the outer diameter, a polypropylene pipe with exactly the same inner size.

If it turns out to be smaller, then it can be drilled with a drill with a feather drill of the desired diameter.

The bearings are bursting with a steel tube to relieve lateral load. On the inner end of the roller we put a ring cut from a coupling of the same size, which will serve as an emphasis.

We assemble the resulting assembly on a hairpin and fasten, using washers and nuts, to the base.

The home-made grinding machine is almost ready, now we put on an emery tape. During rotation, it can move left or right on the rollers. To exclude this phenomenon, we rotate the driven roller around its axis for both nuts until the tape ceases to shift to one or the other edge. Thus, we will find the position when the tape will be in place.
Everything, a home-made grinding machine is ready for work.

A short video review of this homemade machine:

Grinding belt grinding machine

In this manual, we will discuss how to make a simple belt grinder based on a grinding machine with our own hands. Homemade does not change the design of the grinding machine, it is a nozzle, which is installed instead of one of the grinding wheels. The machine copes with its tasks without problems, the materials for assembly are pretty simple. The only difficulty is the manufacture of wheels, the author makes them on a lathe. If there is no lathe, you can make these from plywood by gluing or adapt the wheels from the skateboard. So, if you are interested in home-made, I propose to study the project in more detail.

Materials and tools used by the author:

Material List:
– plastic for turning wheels;
– bearings for driven rollers;
– bolts, nuts, washers, etc ;
– Sheet steel;
– grinder;
– sandpaper or finished sanding belt.

Tool List:
– lathe;
– drilling machine;
– spanners;
– Angle Grinder;
– spray can with paint.

Homemade manufacturing process:

Step one. Grinding Machine Preparation
First, prepare the grinder. We need to unscrew the protective shield, and also remove the grinding wheel, as a result, only the axis remains. On the case you can see the threaded holes for attaching the shield, here we will now attach our nozzle.

Step Four Installation of wheels and tensioner
We install the wheels on the bed, the drive is fastened to the motor shaft with a nut, and the followers will rotate on bolts. The side wheel will act as a tensioning belt, and with it we will center the belt on the wheels. The design of these nodes is very simple, everything is also made of sheet steel, you can familiarize yourself with the design in more detail in the photo. If desired, you can install a spring that will automatically tension the grinding belt.

Most of the machine is done, you can install the grinding belt and try to start the machine. If there is no belt, it can be glued from sandpaper.

Step Five Thrust planes
First of all, we will establish a vertical plane, about which we will abut the product when grinding. We weld the plate to the frame, it is desirable to grind its edges, and polish the plate itself so that the grinding belt lasts longer. Of course, over time, the tape will polish this plane itself.

After that, we weld a horizontal platform at a right angle.

After painting, we assemble everything and test the machine in practice. To begin with, the author tries to polish a piece of the board on it, this works without problems. Also, as an experiment, the knife was sharpened. Of course, the speed here is not very high, so the machine is not suitable for working with metal, but for the processing of wood and other domestic needs, the machine turned out to be excellent.

That’s all, the project is over, I hope you liked the home-made. Good luck and creative inspiration, if you decide to repeat this. Do not forget to share your ideas and homemade things with us!

DIY belt sander

A simple home-made belt grinder made by yourself from improvised materials.

Hello to all lovers of homemade goods!

I want to show you how to make the simplest grinder without complicated turning and welding.

The design of the grinding machine is very simple and made of available materials, it will take a minimum of time to manufacture.

The following is a detailed description.

Materials:

  • engine from the washing machine;
  • speed regulator for the electric motor;
  • bearings;
  • Chipboard;
  • threaded rod;
  • mounting steel corner;
  • a pair of pieces of polypropylene pipes with a diameter of 20 and 32 mm;
  • screws, nuts, washers.

This machine uses an electric motor from a washing machine. We connect it to the 220 V network, through the speed regulator.

Scheme of connecting the regulator to the electric motor.

We make the machine case from chipboard and fasten it with furniture screws. On the body, you need to bolt the engine. The emphasis for the emery tape is made from the mounting corner, the edges of which are rounded to exclude the hook of the tape lock.

The driving roller is made of two polypropylene pipes with a diameter of 20 and 32 mm.

We choose a large pipe with an inner diameter of 20 mm.

In addition, we insert a sheet of tin into the inner hole of the double pipe.

We put the driving roller on the splined shaft of the engine.

Now let’s make a driven roller.

For the driven roller, we select two bearings and, depending on the outer diameter, a polypropylene pipe with exactly the same inner size.

To eliminate bias, scroll the driven roller around its axis for both nuts, until the tape ceases to shift to one or the other edge. Thus, we will find the position when the tape will be in place.
Belt sander, ready to go!

A small video review of a makeshift grinding machine.

How to make a do-it-yourself sanding belt machine?

No home craftsman can do without manual power tools. But sometimes there comes a time when such a tool is not enough, and the help of serious equipment is required. For example, a belt sander is capable of processing the surfaces of large parts. Industrial units are too expensive, so many craftsmen make do-it-yourself grinding machines.

Belt Sander Design

Wood is widely used for the manufacture of various products and parts. In order to properly process a wooden blank, various equipment is used. Thorough high-precision processing of wood is carried out on belt grinders, which as a working body have abrasive tape.

The design of the grinding unit includes:

  1. Abrasive tape that can be positioned horizontally or vertically. It is mounted on a bed and placed between rotating drums.
  2. Leading and driven drums. The rotation of the drive drum is due to the electric motor, which transmits torque through a belt drive. The speed of rotation of the driving element, and hence the speed of the tape, can be controlled by specially set surface treatment modes.
  3. The equipment table may be wooden or metal. On a metal base, more complex workpieces can be sharpened.
  4. An electric motor should have a power of about 2.8 kW and be able to provide the tape with a normal speed of 20 meters per second.
  5. A special mounting hood must be installed so that during the process the dust generated during operation can be removed.

The length of the machine and its working tool depends on the length of the products, which will be processed on it. It is much more convenient to work with workpieces that are shorter than the work surface.

What are grinding machines for?

As a rule, equipment is used for finishing machining of products at the final stages of production. Belt grinding machines can work both with wood and metal.

Woodworking equipment is capable permanently level surfaces, remove roughnesses and irregularities in the form of elevations or indentations, peel off burrs, grind roundings, do internal grinding, achieve smooth and smooth surfaces of the product.

Metal machines work with non-ferrous metals in the form of flat, round and quadrangular blanks and with simple and alloy steel. They are able to rationally and in a short time grind large diameter pipes and rounds.

In addition, belt grinding machines Intend:

  • for grinding products before the paintwork procedure;
  • for processing squared and panel blanks, their side edges and ends;
  • for processing flat surfaces;
  • for grinding curved surfaces.

Manufacturing instruction

Having studied the design of the equipment, it should be decided from what its basic elements will be made.

What to make a bed of?

It is best to make a desktop made of thick iron. The ideal dimensions of the canvas. 500x180x20 mm. However, the larger the dimensions of the bed, the more options for various parts on it can be processed.

Large work surface It will be much more convenient and functional than a small bed. For its manufacture you will need:

  1. Cut one of the sides of the table prepared for the table with a metal milling machine.
  2. Make markup.
  3. Drill three holes in the end face of the cut workpiece.
  4. Using three bolts, secure the platform to the bed.

Selection and installation of the engine for the machine

The engine for the unit can be a motor from a washing machine. If this is not available, then you can choose a motor whose rated power will be up to 3 kW, and the intensity of work. about 1500 rpm. The power unit for the grinding machine should be firmly and securely fixed to the bed.

Lead and driven drums

Such elements for a grinding machine can be made with your own hands from a material such as chipboard. To do this, you must:

  1. Saw workpieces with dimensions of 200×200 mm from a chipboard sheet.
  2. Collect from the obtained blanks a package with a thickness of 240 mm.
  3. Fold and grind everything to an optimum diameter of 200 mm.
  4. Fasten the drive drum to the motor shaft. It will drive the tape.
  5. Secure the driven drum around the machine axis on bearings. At the same time, there should be a special bevel on the side of the drum. This will help ensure that the tape gently touches the work surface.

When making drums, it’s worth considering that diameter of their central part should be a couple of millimeters larger than the outer diameter. This is necessary to ensure the stable operation of the equipment, since the flexible tape will be in the middle of the drum.

DIY sanding belt

As an sanding belt, you can take several emery strips. They will need to be cut into pieces with a length of 200 mm and glued. An ideal base for the canvas would be a tarp.

Gluing the product with your own hands is recommended as a quality product that will be able to maintain the integrity of the element for a long time.

Some wizards recommend tighten the rollers with rubber. You can use cameras from mopeds or bicycles for this. The thickness of the rubber layer should be about 30 mm.

Having assembled the construction from all the selected elements, you can safely proceed to the processing of wood.

Grinder from a manual grinder

Taking as a basis a manual grinding machine, the rest of the equipment parts can be made with your own hands from chipboard, pine and birch bars. The U-shaped emphasis is glued with PVA glue, the remaining elements of the unit are connected with screws.

The base of the machine can be connected by loops two pieces of chipboard. For greater strength, the hinges are attached with M6 bolts.

The grinder to the base is installed using bars that are pre-adjusted to the shape of the body and glued on top with pieces of rubber.

The front grinder is attached with a suitable size furniture confirmants. With their help, the grinding plane can be set in the desired position.

Behind the base, the machine is attached with a bar and two screws. So that the thrust pad with the grinding plane is in line, pieces of soft rubber can be glued under the body.

In the horizontal part of the U-shaped stop, a groove can be made to move the small carriage, which can be usefulI’m for sharpening knives.

After fixing and adjusting the grinder, the machine can be started to operate.

Having studied the manufacturing options for a belt sander with your own hands, and clearly following the instructions, you can get multifunctional equipment. Such equipment will not only be able to grind wood products, but also grind any cutting tools.
