If for some reason your favorite mower isn’t listed—tell us why you think it should be included in the Комментарии и мнения владельцев below!

Best Battery-Powered Lawn Mower – What We Look For

Power to Cut Grass

With brushless motors, testing lawnmower power becomes more challenging. This is due to the ability of these motors to adjust power to meet the load on the cutting blade. To get a sense of real-world power, we cut an overgrown section of grass to around 4-inches and then see how short we can cut it.

The best battery-powered lawn mowers can cut these curated sections of grass at the lowest cutting positions without stalling out. It really lets us know how much working power the mower has.

Runtime and Cutting Area

Determining runtime on a battery-powered lawn mower combines several different metrics. We need to understand how much area we can cut on a single charge. To do this, we prepare our lawn by cutting it to a standard height. Then, we see how long we can mow on one battery charge as we cut it down to 3 inches.

Once we know that, we calculate the maximum area you should be able to mow without having to stop and change or recharge the batteries.

Quality of Cut

We test three basic things to determine the cut quality of each battery-powered mower. We look at the evenness of the cut, bagging efficiency, and the mower’s mulching efficiency.

To gauge evenness, we look for blades that stick out along a cut line. We also observe areas that may have been cut shorter than intended.

Measuring bagging efficiency looks at how much grass the mower leaves behind compared to how much it collects in the bag. Run three mowers over a similar section of grass, and the bags will likely tell very different stories as to how much grass gets collected.

Mulching efficiency takes in consideration the size of the grass clippings dropped by the mower as it makes a pass. It also looks to see if the lawnmower leaves behind any clumping or trailing along the path.

Noise Level

To understand how much noise each battery-powered lawn mower makes, we use an SPL meter set to slow response, A-weighted. In an open area, we measure the recorded decibels taken from a 5-foot, 8-inch operator’s ear.

Build Quality

We consider the quality of the battery-powered lawn mower by looking at the materials used. We also observe how well the mower is put together and how each major component physically functions. We’re looking for solid parts that will last well beyond the warranty period, rigid construction, and ample protection for any electrical components including the battery pack(s).

Mowing on Hills and Slopes

In Florida, we don’t encounter many slopes, but we do have access to some hilly terrain. We also encounter many lakes—most of which have sloped sides. And, of course, nearly every property out in the county has proximity to drainage ditches. We check both push mowers and self-propelled models to check how well they maintain traction when mowing uphill, downhill, and side-to-side along a pitch.

Features

In addition to any standout features, here’s a list of the standard items we look for:

  • Brushless motor
  • Drive type and function
  • Deck size and material
  • Height range and adjustment
  • Handle positions
  • Rear/side discharge and bagging options
  • Battery ports and functionality

Price and Value

Our professional reviewers really appreciate value. To us, value means more than just the price of a product. It combines what you pay against what you get. A more expensive product may present the best battery-powered lawn mower value if it performs far better than the budget brands.

Best Battery-Powered Lawn Mower Buying Guide

As you’re deciding on the best battery lawn mower for you in 2023, consider how far these outdoor tools have come. Today’s battery-powered lawn mowers provide longer run-time, better cutting performance, and vastly improved features and ergonomics over the first models we started seeing back in 2014.

What’s Your Budget?

While you can buy a battery lawn mower for under 300, plan to spend at least 500 if you want something that comes from a reputable manufacturer and has features like a self-propelled mechanism. If you want premium features, expect that price to hit or exceed 700 (and Pro models can go even higher).

Looking back at gas lawnmowers, this may give you pause. After all, you can typically find a gas mower for a lot less money. You might even get something that has more power and additional features. The best battery-powered lawn mowers are more about what you don’t get: Noise, emissions, and yearly winterization hassles and costs.

Are Battery Riding Mowers Viable?

Several zero-turn and riding mowers exist in both the consumer and professional markets. Professional landscaping crews have options such as the Greenworks Lithium Z zero turn (they also have a battery-powered UTV). You can also look got brands like Green Machine.

Homeowners have many more choices. Brands like EGO, Ryobi, Greenworks, Cub Cadet, and others crowd the field—giving you lots of great choices. That wasn’t the case just several years ago.

We’ve reviewed many of these battery-powered zero-turn mowers. The downside comes in the form of potential increased up-front costs compared to similar gas ZTs. A second potential issue comes with charge times. One of the fastest charge times to date comes from Greenworks. Their ZTs use external dual battery chargers to top off batteries in just 90 minutes. For many other ZTs you might have to wait several hours to recharge all of the packs. That’s far longer than refilling a gas zero-turn lawn mower!

A third factor to consider involves longevity. Battery-powered zero-turn mowers are fairly new-to-market. That means we don’t yet fully understand the long-term maintenance or repair issues and required to keep these tools running for extended periods of time. Users of gas-powered ZTs can keep their tools running for 10 years or more with regular maintenance. With a fully-electric power plant, we simply don’t know what kind of service life to expect—even with proper maintenance routines.

Residential or Commercial Quality?

On the surface, there’s not a huge difference between commercial-quality and residential-quality walk-behind battery lawn mowers.

High-end battery-powered mowers match or exceed the power of comparable gas-powered mowers. The Milwaukee M18 FUEL lawn mower notably demonstrated more power than a popular commercial gas mower in recent testing. The EGO Select Cut XP —technically a residential model—also bests many gas models in our testing.

Commercial battery mowers add designs and features that meet the needs of professional landscapers. Steel and aluminum decks come to mind as do more rigid methods of adjusting deck height. Pros also demand the best cut quality and excellent bagging performance. Lastly, mowers designed for landscaping professionals must be ready to operate for longer periods of time—and for multiple days of the week.

Brands such as STIHL, Makita, and Husqvarna—to name a few—rely on their dealer networks rather than big box stores. You get additional support during and after the sale that you won’t find at other retailers.

Battery-powered riding mowers are a completely different ballgame. With those, you’ll find a much greater difference in Pro-vs-residential design and performance, along with a massive gap in cost.

Self-Propelled or Push Mower?

Self-propelled drives don’t subtract much from overall runtime. If you can afford this feature, we recommend getting it. Rather than simply on or off controls, look for variable speed that lets you dial in a top speed and then vary your pace within that range. EGO, Milwaukee Tool, Ryobi, and others offer this feature. You may also want to try out the controls in the store or dealership before buying it. We can typically get a good feel for the ergonomics of a mower after playing with it for a few minutes.

Look for a mower that disengages its drive easily when you want to pull the mower back. Some systems have a hard time disengaging the self-propelled motor. These mowers require you to drag the drive wheels rather than letting them roll.

Classic push mowers also have their place—especially if you’re on a budget. These mowers typically drop 100 off the price of a comparable self-propelled mower, and they cut just as well and with slightly higher runtime.

Bag, Mulch, or Side Discharge?

No matter if you tend to mulch or bag, we recommend getting a mower that has all three modes (including side discharge). There are times when you can use each throughout the year to your advantage.

The Ryobi AWD mower has an interesting integrated lever/gate system for switching between bagging and mulching modes. We love not having to remember where we placed the mulching plug! Nearly all push mowers include a bagging option—so figuring out rear or side discharge remains about the only decision here.

Deck and Blade Size

All of the best battery-powered lawn mowers use 21-inch blades for the most part. A couple have 20-inch blades and some vary in how they take that measurement. We appreciate brands that list the actual blade diameter (like Makita) as opposed to simply stating the deck diameter. The latter has no bearing on the cutting swatch.

Smaller push mowers work really well for tiny lawns or gardens. We know a gentleman who preferred a small 16-inch mower because he had to carry it up and down the stairs to mow his tiny backyard!

For those looking for a larger deck, both Greenworks Commercial and Greenworks Pro 60V have 25-inch mowers. Ryobi also just released a 30-inch riding mower that fits through gates—even with a bagger installed! Residential battery-powered riding mowers currently go up to 54 inches or larger while you can find commercial models with up to 74-inch decks.

Larger deck sizes really help when mowing lawns larger than 1/3-acre in size. When mowing a lawn less than that, standard 20- or 21-inch decks work really well.

Deck Height Adjustment and Cutting Height Range

Most consumers set their height once and leave it alone after that. Single-point height adjustments make it easy to adjust your cutting height. It’s certainly easier than adjusting each wheel manually.

Pros typically prefer 2 or 4-point adjustments. What they really want are stiff decks that don’t rock while you cut so that you get an even cut across any lawn. A 4-point height adjustment system offers the most rigid solution. This one is really about preference.

The majority of battery-powered lawnmowers have all the height range you need to cover a wide variety of grass species. If you prefer to cut at heights over 3-1/2 inches or under 2 inches, just double-check that the mower you’re looking at has that option.

Multiple Battery Ports

When mowing lawns over 1/3 of an acre, you may benefit from multiple battery ports. We typically see three ways lawnmowers utilize these ports:

  • The second storage port acts as a battery holder
  • An active second port includes a manual switch for engaging the second battery
  • Two active battery ports include automatic switching where you can use either port while mowing

Automatic switching seems to be common—and certainly the most convenient. You find this option on the higher-priced mowers. While we prefer that over manually switching or swapping batteries, it does save you from having to return to the garage, shed, or trailer to get another battery.

Why Buy a Battery-Powered Lawn Mower?

The best battery-powered lawn mower for you should get your lawn cut on one charge. No matter which model that is, they all share some common characteristics. There are no gas emissions and no gas engine to maintain. You still need to clean it off when you’re done, but the maintenance is much easier and takes less time.

They’re also quieter. The early bird gets the worm and if you want to start mowing at 7:00 on Saturday morning, your neighbors can probably sleep through it. of a night owl? Many battery-powered mowers have headlights, and you’re unlikely to disturb your neighbor’s Lord of the Rings marathon at 10:00 PM.

Those are some of the more obvious reasons, but one of our favorites is the ability to put the battery in and mow. There’s no cranking, no choke, and no fuel cut-off valve. As long as you have enough batteries to get the entire lawn cut, it’s an easier system to work with than gas.

Best Battery-Powered Lawn Mower Overall

Pro Pick: Milwaukee M18 Fuel 21-Inch Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

The Milwaukee lawn mower simply prioritizes power above all. With a full 10 ft-lbs of torque (roughly exceeding a 200cc gas engine), the M18 Fuel self-propelled lawn mower can start up while nearly buried in grass. It is the strongest battery-powered walk-behind we’ve had our hands on for testing to date. It runs off a pair of 12.0Ah batteries, running as much as 60 minutes in light conditions. We clocked over 40 minutes when doing some major grass-cutting (removing 4 – 6 inches of growth).

With that said, the mower doesn’t come without some glitches. The drive bar introduces some thumb fatigue, for example. In the end, we found we could adjust our natural grip to overcome most of the strain when mowing for extended periods of time.

Milwaukee Tool designed this mower to handle professional use while offering the convenience of single-point height adjustments and vertical storage.

Price: 999 for the kit with two 12.0Ah batteries and a dual-port Rapid charger

Residential Pick: EGO 56V Select Cut XP 21-Inch Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

The EGO Select Cut XP Mower built upon the original EGO Select Cut mower—an instant favorite of ours with its stacked-blade system and solid performance level to go with its excellent cut quality. EGO stepped it up with the release of the Select Cut XP, taking everything we already loved and stepping up the torque to 8.3 ft-lbs. It can still use some help on the side/rear discharge, but if you bag or mulch like most people, it’s tough to find a better mower to maintain your lawn.

Price: 549 bare, 799 with a 10.0Ah battery and Rapid charger

Best Self-Propelled Battery-Powered Lawn Mower

As self-propelled models, our recommendations from Milwaukee and EGO top the charts in this category, too. Here are two more outstanding options for you.

Pro Pick: Makita ConnectX 21-inch Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

One of the biggest challenges with any battery-powered lawn mower is runtime. Makita put that problem squarely in its crosshairs and developed the ConnectX system. Unlike other designs, the 1200Wh power supply attaches directly to the top of the mower, offering more than 3x the capacity of most cordless mowers and running up to 3 hours continuously.

Similar to the 18V X2 (36V) XML08, the mower tops out at 2800 RPM with a 2300 RPM Quiet Mode and has a true 21-inch steel deck.

Price: 999.00 bare, ~1399.00 power supply (2348.00 for both)

Residential Pick: Ryobi 40V HP Brushless CrossCut 21-Inch Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

Ryobi crushed it with the development of the 40V HP Brushless CrossCut self-propelled lawn mower, making huge strides over its previous generation of mowers. Matching up very well against EGO’s Select Cut XP, it’s a stacked blade design that offers excellent power and cut quality. Where it has a clear advantage over its competitors is on the side discharge. This mower distributes clippings far better than other battery-powered lawn mowers we’ve tested. Plus, Ryobi builds this mower in the US using global materials, and the kit is typically priced less than the EGO Select Cut XP mower.

Price: 749 with two 6.0Ah batteries and a Rapid charger

Best Battery-Powered Commercial Lawn Mower

Milwaukee and Makita both earned our recommendations as the top overall battery-powered lawn mowers on the commercial side. Greenworks Commercial is another brand worth considering thanks to improvements in its 25-inch model heading into the year.

Greenworks Commercial 82V 25-inch Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

The big deal for Greenworks Commercial is an improvement in power. The 25-inch mower now has the performance equivalent to a 160cc gas engine. Aside from that and a change in the color scheme, it’s still very similar to the previous version with side-by-side blades that overlap to cover a larger area without losing a ton of battery efficiency.

The entire Greenworks Commercial line got an overhaul coming into this year with tools that are lighter and higher performing, making it one of the emerging systems to keep an eye on as more areas of the country shift to battery power.

Price: Starts at 714.99 bare

Best Cordless Push Lawn Mower

Ryobi 40V HP Brushless CrossCut 21-Inch Push Lawn Mower

If you don’t want a self-propelled drive system, or you’re looking to save a little money, you can get a quality push mower with similar performance and features to the top models we already mentioned. Of those options, Ryobi’s CrossCut is our pick as the best battery-powered push mower. Essentially, it just removes the drive system and keeps the performance, cut quality, and other features, along with its US-built designation.

Price: 599.00 with a 7.5Ah battery and Rapid charger

Best Cordless Mower for Small Lawns

Skil PWRCore 20 18-inch Lawn Mower

The joy of a small lawn is that it doesn’t take long to cut and you can go with a smaller mower that takes up less space. A 17 or 18-inch deck is great for that kind of lawn. The good news is, you don’t have to sacrifice all the features of larger mowers to get.

Our top pick is the Skil PWRCore 20 18-inch lawn mower. It has the benefits of a brushless motor, folds up for vertical storage, and its 20V batteries are compatible with Skil’s entire line of PWRCore 20 lawn and power tools.

Price: 299 with two 4.0Ah batteries and a dual-port charger.

Best Battery-Powered Lawn Mower for Large Lawns

Greenworks Pro 60V 25-inch Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

In our testing, the Greenworks Commercial 25-inch mower earned our pick as the best battery-powered lawn mower for large lawns. Currently, no one else comes close to its 25-inch cutting width in a walk-behind. With the pair of 4.0Ah batteries in the kit, we were able to cut for over an hour, easily covering a 1/2-acre. With a 599.00 price tag when you buy direct from Greenworks, it’s an excellent value, too!

Once you get close to 3/4 of an acre, you might want to consider a battery-powered riding mower.

Best Battery-Powered Riding Lawn Mower

Residential: EGO 52-Inch Residential ZT Mower (ZT4204L)

The EGO Z6 Zero Turn Riding Mower shook up what you can expect from a battery-powered riding mower in 2021. This year, they’re stepping it up a level with a 52-inch fabricated deck and power equivalent to a 25HP gas engine. It keeps the comfort and refined controls of the original model, making the “Tesla of ZTs” even better.

Price: 6999 with six 12.0Ah batteries and an onboard charger.

Commercial: Mean Green 74-inch EVO Zero Turn Mower

Mean Green is pushing the envelope further with a 74-inch deck on its flagship EVO ZTR. It delivers an impressive cutting width and day-long 8-hour max runtime. Combined with a 13 MPH top speed and 37 HP equivalent power, this is the battery-powered riding mower to get when you have a lot of property to cut.

There are a lot of accessories to choose from—including a solar canopy! Mean Green certainly lets you customize the mower to suit your particular commercial needs.

All of this innovation comes at a cost, though. You’re looking at a minimum of 28,500 to get in and closing in on 35,000 if you want the most runtime. That’s before you add accessories.

Price: 28,500 (22kWh) – 34,499 (35kWh)

Best Budget Cordless Lawn Mower

EGO 56V 21-inch Self-Propelled Mower LM2102SP

If you’re shopping with a sub-400 budget, you don’t have access to the top-tier mowers, but you’re still in a range that has quality options. You can find budget self-propelled models in this price range, but we suggest stepping up in overall quality with the EGO LM2101 push mower.

It has a 5.0Ah battery that can run up to 45 minutes and covers a 1/4-acre lot well. You get single-point height adjustments, 3-in-1 discharge options, and vertical storage with a better build than most mowers in the same price range. When it comes to getting the best value battery-powered lawn mower, this is it.

5 Best Battery Powered Lawn Mowers for 2023 [According to Expert]

Price: 399 with 5.0Ah battery and charger

Best Battery-Powered Lawn Mower: Options From Brands We Trust

Best DeWALT Battery-Powered Lawn Mower

DeWALT made some big improvements from its first-generation 2 x 20V self-propelled mower to the second. The DeWALT DCMWSP244 has far better runtime, low noise levels (even for cordless), and the build is sturdy. There are still some quirks in this one, though, and it’s not for everyone.

Price: 599 with two 10.0Ah batteries and charger.

Best Greenworks Battery-Powered Lawn Mower

If you like the design of the Greenworks 60V 25-inch mower, but don’t have a ton of lawn to maintain or want a smaller storage footprint, check out the Greenworks 60V 21-inch self-propelled mower. It’s effectively the same foundation and uses a single blade.

Price: 749.99 with two 4.0Ah batteries and a dual-port Rapid charger

Best Echo Battery-Powered Lawn Mower

Echo phased out its 58V battery lineup in favor of a completely new 56V eForce line (sorry, the old batteries are not compatible with the new tools) and that includes the revised Echo DLM-2100 lawn mower. This 21-inch self-propelled mower includes a 5.0Ah battery and charger in the kit.

Best EGO Battery-Powered Lawn Mower

For all the reasons we mentioned above and more, the EGO Select Cut XP is our pick for the best EGO battery-powered lawn mower.

quality, electric, lawn, mowers, best, battery-powered

Price: 549 bare, 849 with a 10.0Ah battery and Rapid charger

Best HART Battery-Powered Lawn Mower

HART stepped up big-time in the lawn and garden department this year with several new mowers to choose from. Our favorite is the HART 40V brushless 21-inch self-propelled mower (HLPM061US) for several reasons. It’s stronger and runs longer thanks to the pair of 6.0Ah batteries in the kit. It has a full 3-in-1 mulching/bagging/side discharge design, stores vertically, and has a beefier build than previous HART models. To top it all off, this one is made in the USA using global materials.

Price: 598 with two 6.0Ah batteries and a Rapid charger

Best Husqvarna Battery-Powered Lawn Mower

The Husqvarna 20-inch self-propelled lawn mower features a commercial-grade aluminum deck as well as a front bar to protect the battery/motor housing. The W520i notably is compatible with a battery backpack. It doesn’t fit as cleanly as the Makita ConnectX mower since you still need to run an adapter into the battery slots, but it does take the weight off of your back and keep you from being tethered. It also has a higher-than-normal cutting range that tops out at 4.5 inches.

Best Kobalt Battery-Powered Lawn Mower

Kobalt is quietly still making excellent battery-powered lawn mowers, and the 80V line is where its performance peaks. The Kobalt 80V 21-inch mower (a rear-wheel-drive system) sports an upgrade to the handle system that makes folding it forward for vertical storage easier. In addition to its excellent cutting power, Kobalt also makes efficient use of its batteries, running up to 60 minutes with a 6.0Ah battery. Plus, its high 4 1/8-inch top cutting height is great for tall grass species and reclaiming neglected areas.

Price: 749 with two 4.0Ah batteries and a charger

Best Makita Battery-Powered Lawn Mower

If Makita’s ConnectX lawn mower is a little too high-priced for your budget, give the Makita XML08 lawn mower a shot. It has a very similar commercial-grade build and feature set while running on the 18V X2 (36V) system that’s compatible with Makita’s largest line of OPE and power tools. With room onboard for four batteries, you can still cover a decent area. Oddly, it’s not uncommon for the four-battery kit to be priced less than the bare tool.

Price: 899 (look for discounts) with four 5.0Ah batteries and dual-port Rapid charger

Best Milwaukee Battery-Powered Lawn Mower

There’s only one Milwaukee M18 FUEL lawn mower, but it’s a good one! Check out more in our review (click the headline) or read our summary above.

Price: 1099 with two 12.0Ah batteries and a dual-port Rapid charger

Best Ryobi Battery-Powered Lawn Mower

For the reasons we stated earlier, the Ryobi 40V HP Brushless CrossCut mower is their top battery-powered model currently.

Price: 799 with two 6.0Ah batteries and a Rapid charger

Best Skil Battery-Powered Lawn Mower

We see a lot of value in the Skil 40V self-propelled lawn mower. Running on the stronger PWRCore 40 line, this brushless mower has excellent all-around performance and cut-quality characteristics compared to others in the same price range. If you’re shopping in the sub-500 class, Skil has the best budget self-propelled lawn mower available.

Price: 399.99 with a 5.0Ah battery and Rapid charger

Best STIHL Battery-Powered Lawn Mower

STIHL has been a little more cautious in entering the battery-powered lawn mower market and upgraded the line with a couple of self-propelled models. Of the two available, the STIHL RMA 510 V is your top performer. It features a 21-inch steel deck (20-inch blade) with a tougher build than the 460 series and its 3.9-inch top cutting height is appropriate for taller grass species. The one downside is that this model runs through batteries quickly compared to other self-propelled mowers.

Price: 509.99 bare, 729.99 with AP 300 battery and charger

Best Toro Battery-Powered Lawn Mower

The first-generation Toro Flex Force 60V lawn mowers were excellent, though not quite able to compete with the best of the best. A new generation of 60V Max Super Recycler 21-inch self-propelled mowers is on its way with a sleek black color scheme and the promise of serious upgrades. The two models (one with and one without headlights) FOCUS on high airflow, excellent power, a Flex Handle suspension system, and a durable build. Along with all that improvement comes a steeper price tag, though.

Price: 649 bare, 799 with 7.5Ah battery and charger

Best Electric Lawn Mowers Of 2022, Tested By An Expert

#1. Greenworks Walk-The Best Electric Lawn Mower Overall

A 24-Volt cordless electric lawn mower designed specifically for small suburban lawns is the Greenworks MO24B410. It has a 13-inch mower deck, which makes it easier to make neat turns and fit into tight spaces around trees and other landscaping elements.

It has a 4 Ah lithium-ion battery, which eliminates memory loss and reduces charging issues that are sometimes seen with less powerful battery systems. Even the original purchase includes a compatible Smart charger, which is a special touch.

This prevents the battery from being accidentally overcharged, which could limit its lifespan and cause harm. It can mow up to a quarter of an acre when completely charged, which translates to an average run time of about 30 minutes.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Greenworks used advanced electrics. They even have a 2400 mAh USB power port, allowing you to utilize the lawnmower’s internal battery to charge your phone or best free phone tracker tracker apps.

Both a bagger and a mulching mower can be configured with the 13-inch cutting deck. The original purchase comes with all required attachments. Thanks to the available height settings, you can cut your grass to the perfect height for the current conditions.

A strong 3-year tool warranty is offered with the Greenworks MO24B410. This is a boast about their production, engineering, and material procedures.

Performance: The 4.0 Ah lithium-ion battery in the 24-volt electric lawn mower performs superbly, powering the cutting blades. Even when fully loaded, the bagger is very comfortable to use and doesn’t lumber.

Effortless Use: Due to its light weight and agility, this lawnmower is simple to use even in confined spaces. You don’t have to be concerned about unintentionally overloading the lithium-ion battery because the charger has integrated Smart technology. When you are cutting the grass, you can even store it on a sturdy garage shelf because it is so lightweight.

Maintenance: The Greenworks MO24B410 doesn’t require much maintenance like many other cordless electric lawn mowers. Spend an extra minute or two to sweep away any leftover material before putting the mulcher away because it can occasionally become clogged with thick, damp grass clippings.

Safety Options: All of the hand control safety features you would expect to find on a walk-behind push mower are included with the Greenworks MO24B410.

USB port and battery: The 4.0 Ah lithium-ion battery and the Smart charger lessen the possibility of overcharging and memory loss issues. The USB port on the 2400 mAh power bank is a really good addition. You can use it to keep your MP3 player or smartphone charged while mowing.

Pros

  • No memory loss due to Lithium-ion battery
  • 24-Volt electric motor
  • Contains a battery and charger
  • 3-years of warranty
  • USB charging and port available
  • 13-inch cutting deck
  • Bagging or mulching mower

#2. EGO POWER 21 Mower– Most Powerful Electric Lawn Mower

The 8.3 ft-lb of torque produced by the EGO POWER 21” Select Cut XP Self-Propelled Mower outperforms the power of gasoline. The Mulching Blade, High Lift Bagging Blade, and Extended Runtime Blade are the three lower, replaceable blades that come with the Select CutTM Multi-Blade Cutting System.

The mower already has a Mulching Blade installed, which is perfect for weekly mulching. Highlights

Drive Controls: EGO revives the classic Select Cut Touch Drive technology, which combines a huge push button on each side of the handle with a forward/back spinning speed dial.

Vertical Storage: It is no surprise that EGO still provides vertical storage with this mower, and the procedure is rather simple. Simply swing it around by pressing the green lever against the handle on the left.

LEDs: At this time, the majority of battery-powered lawnmowers have LED lights. For them, EGO adds an on/off switch. Although they are not the first to offer that choice, it is good to choose not to use them when you don’t have to.

Grass Catcher Bag: You will need a larger grass catcher bag for a lawn mower. This is huge and powerful, and you won’t be dissatisfied with this one. You will have plenty of room to store the cuttings with a 2-bushel capacity.

Height Modification: This lawn mower’s quality almost defies description, and you’ll see that it offers a choice of seven different cutting heights. It’s really that easy; just pick one of the seven options between 1.5” and 4” and go on.

Mulching: Although it is not a feature found in all cordless mowers, mulching is undoubtedly one of the key selling factors for anything this powerful. Every time you mow your grass, the ability to mulch means that your lawn will receive a critical nutritional boost, enhancing the quality of your lawn.

#3. Worx Lawn Mower–Best Premium Electric Lawn Mower

Lawn Mowers and other garden tools under the Worx name are made by the Suzhou, China-based Positec Tool Corporation.

The Worx WG779 is a machine that you might want to look into further if you have a tiny lawn to maintain, are sick of your manual mower, and have been wishing for something motorized to make your life easier. It’s one of their smallest mowers, with a mowing width of just 14 inches, and since it’s battery-powered, you won’t have to deal with power wires or gas canisters.

This well-known tool company’s improved, more potent model is the Worx 40V Cordless Lawn Mower. With 40V of power and the option to specify higher amp hour batteries, you can now mow your lawn for at least 35 minutes without interruption (and up to 55 minutes with 4.0Ah batteries). After all, cutting through the wire while mowing your lawn is one of the toughest parts of lawn maintenance.

You will undoubtedly want to pay close attention if you have been searching for a new mower and have considered going cordless. Cordless is ideally suited to every plot, whether it is round or narrow.

Regular Cutting: Two centimeters is the lowest cutting grade, which is typical for most mowers. Going cordless has allowed users to mow grass more frequently than before, making each task a little simpler than the last. Effective edge-to-edge trimming even removes the majority of the grass right up to the fence.

Eco and Turbo Modes: You can use the Worx 40V cordless in Turbo or Eco Modes. Eco mode helps the battery last longer. Turbo mode provides a little more power and is apparent over thicker grass. Even at maximum power, the mower is pretty silent; turbo makes it somewhat noisier.

Battery Power: According to estimates, the larger batteries’ Eco mode runtime of up to 55 minutes should be sufficient for lawns up to 350 m2. The machine won’t run as long if you use the 2.0Ah cells, but you will get the same power. However, according to Worx, a single charge should last you 30-35 minutes.

Easily Usable: For any modest lawn, it takes around 15 minutes to mow, from taking the mower out to putting it away, because the setup is simple and quick.

Pros

  • Well-built machine
  • Easy to store
  • Delivers a clean cut
  • Long battery life
  • Effective for longer grass
  • Roller for stripes on the lawn

Cons

  • Clogging problem on wet grass
  • Not suitable for people who want a shorter cut
  • Difficult cutting height adjustment

How We Made The List Of Best Electric Mowers?

The best electric mowers are hard to find in various gas-powered models, self-propelled mowers, battery mowers, and other kinds of electric lawn mowers. There is an untiring effort of our team that gathered useful information about each brand of electric lawn mower and their reviews on reputable websites.

Our list of best electric lawn mowers not only included the brands reviewed by other websites but also tested them one by one after selecting the best available choices.

We utilized several factors to develop our list of the best electric lawn mowers. The factors include the price of the electric mower, the performance of the electric mower, the features of the electric mower, the charge time of the lawn mower, and most importantly, the customer reviews. Before moving towards the detail of each best electric lawn mower, let’s have a look at the factors we looked for in them.

What We Looked For?

  • Performance of a Lawn Mower: We looked into the best mowers for maintaining a lawn, including those that could cut grass more precisely and improve turf health. Over many years of extensive testing and tests of fresh competitors against our established guidelines, we have personally evaluated this performance.
  • Interface and Capabilities: In years of testing, we’ve discovered that most midrange mowers function similarly; most can cut the grass just well. This prompted us to FOCUS on user interface characteristics, such as how challenging it is to change the push-bar height or elevate and lower the mowing deck.
  • Price of Lawn Mower: We looked at the price in terms of future worth. In general, gas mowers are more affordable upfront but have ongoing expenses that cordless mowers do not. The battery makes up a sizable portion of the cost of cordless mowers. We looked for brands that offered quality mowers at a reasonable price and better batteries.
  • Charging and Duration: Among cordless options, we considered the two key elements, including charge time and run time, which decide if a battery will be satisfactory or frustrating. Due to the significance of these two components, we only considered lawn mowers with a minimum of a 40-volt battery.
  • Customer Feedback and Reputation: we looked for brands’ overall reputation and customer reviews. This prompted us to carefully examine the variances among a smaller set of roughly 50 well-established, reputable models from leading manufacturers, frequently protected by equivalent guarantees of between three and five years.

Buying Guide For Choosing Electric Or Battery Mowers

Lawn mowers include a number of features that make them better suited for particular lawns and users. When choosing the best electric lawn mower for grooming your yard, keep the following things in mind.

Electric lawn mowers come in various designs, including push, riding, self-propelled, and robot models. The best option will depend on your yard, your financial situation, and the level of labor you are comfortable with.

Push lawn mowers are straightforward walk-behind types that must be manually propelled ahead. Compared to other electric kinds with more sophisticated capabilities, they are substantially less expensive. Push mowers are best for small to medium-sized yards with level terrain because they require more work.

Self-Propelled Lawn Mowers move the wheels forward as they cut the grass. These mowers sometimes prove to be expensive. Convenience is the trade-off, and because they need less work, they are preferred for medium- to large lawns and sloping terrain.

Riding Lawn Mowers are as powerful as they come, and their price reflects this. This mower category includes various models, such as lawn tractors, rear-engine mowers, and zero-turn mowers. Users can operate the mower while sitting or standing. They are designed to handle vast yards and easily maneuver hills and even steep slopes, thanks to their widest cutting width and terrain capabilities.

Autonomous Robot Lawn Mowers operate with the smallest amount of effort. These cutting-edge machines have several contemporary features, like collision sensors, programmable mowing, and app operation. Compared to other mowers, lawn robots are less potent. They’re not the best option for vast lawns because they also have a short run time and a smaller cutting width.

Voltage for lawnmowers is expressed in volts (V), corresponding to how much power the motor can generate. energy is sent from the battery or power source to the motor with a higher voltage.

The motor’s power is likewise determined by amps (amperage). Amperage, which typically ranges from 2 to 12 amps, is the frequency at which electrical current is provided to the lawn mower.

An electric lawn mower’s motor power is measured in watts (W), which equals volts times amps. As a result, a larger battery doesn’t automatically translate into a more potent mower. Compared to a 7-amp mower with a 50V battery, a 5-amp mower with a 60V battery (300W) has less power (350W).

Brushless motors are more energy-efficient and lose less energy as heat. Since there are no dull brushes to replace, they create less friction, which harms the motor, and are simpler to maintain. These elements result in brushed motors performing better when taken as a whole.

Brushed motors, in contrast, produce more heat while losing power. As a result, a mower powered by this kind of motor could overheat and stall. Brushed motors are the least expensive alternative but are more prone to friction and temperature problems and require more maintenance.

These days, many electric lawnmowers are cordless and powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. You can still provide power to the Push mowers and self-propelled mowers with dependable corded solutions. Each form of energy has advantages and disadvantages of its own.

The most adaptable mowers are battery-powered models that you can use everywhere on your lawn to remove the grass. However, You must charge the battery before mowing can resume when it runs out, which typically happens within 30 to 60 minutes. Since you may replace the first battery when it runs out, buying a second battery can increase the running time of cordless mowers by two times.

A corded electric mower has the benefit of having limitless power available from an electrical outlet. Because corded mowers don’t require costly batteries, they are frequently more inexpensive and lighter. The user is constrained by the length of the extension cord, which is unquestionably a downside.

If you’re considering getting a corded mower, remember that you’ll need a heavy-duty extension cord. The ideal cords are 12- or 14-gauge, but it’s always vital to check the owner’s handbook.

The size of its deck measures the cutting swath of a lawn mower. The more grass you can cut in one pass, or the broader the swath, the fewer passes you’ll need to make. However, a broader swath necessitates more power, which may result in a reduction in battery life.

Sweep widths for the best electric push mowers and self-propelled electric mowers range from 13 to 22 inches on average, while those for robot models are 5 to 10 inches and those for riding mowers are up to 54 inches. Even a 15-inch swath width will suffice if the lawn is tiny to complete the task without consuming too much time. A wider swath width will be advantageous for larger yards so that mowing doesn’t take forever.

You should consider the mower’s size and weight before buying it, especially if there is no user and storage space restriction. Mowers with higher voltage tend to be heavier in general since larger batteries are heavier. Additionally, larger-decked mowers typically weigh more than smaller ones.

The biggest, heaviest versions are riding mowers. Heavy-duty models resemble a “subcompact” automobile, while little riding mowers resemble a go-kart. They range in weight from 400 pounds to more than 800 pounds.

Since self-propulsion requires greater battery power, self-propelled mowers typically weigh more than push ones. Small push mowers can weigh as low as 30 pounds, while large self-propelled mowers can weigh up to 100 pounds. Remember that self-propelled mowing still requires manual exertion, such as maneuvering the mower through confined spaces and moving it backward.

A robot mower is a good choice if you want a portable tool. Due to the absence of batteries, corded electric mowers are more lightweight than their cordless equivalents. In order To save space, You can place the majority of corded mowers on the wall of a garage or shed.

The lightest and smallest choice is a robot mower, which typically weighs between 15 and 30 pounds. The majority are hardly bigger than a robotic vacuum. They are highly portable and simple to store a result.

With wider rear wheels with a diameter of 8 inches or greater, push and self-propelled mowers designed to handle rocky terrain and dense grass have been developed. On the other hand, small-wheeled, compact models are better at going into and around flower beds, trees, and other yard obstacles.

Tires are a feature of riding lawnmowers, and there are many kinds for different surfaces. Lug tires are the best option for damp, slick, or sloped yards due to their thickness. Smooth tires shield well-kept lawns from ruts and other harm. Turf tires create a compromise with adequate traction and less detrimental impacts on the yard.

Look for handy features and functions in the top electric lawn mowers and garden maintenance companies that provide greater versatility and safer operation:

Speed Control: While some electric lawn mowers have many speed settings, more basic models simply have one. A squeeze handle, dial, drive bar, or pace-keeping system can all be used to change the speed (usually reserved for high-end models).

Adjustable Cutting Height: Like gas versions, most electric mowers may be changed to accommodate a range of cutting heights, from 1 to 4 inches. Find out the ideal cutting height for the grass before selecting a mower. Most grass types should be cut between 2- and 334-inches height as a rough rule of thumb.

Rear or Side Discharge: Consider a mower with a side or rear discharge and an attachable bag if you wish to collect grass clippings to discard or add to a compost pile.

Mulching: Many lawn mowers have blades for mulching. Mulching mowers reduce the size of the grass, returning some nutrients to the lawn.

Security: The handles of most electric lawn mowers are equipped with a safety bar. In order to retain the motor running and reduce the likelihood of accidents, the bar must be kept locked. Many additionally have flaps and barriers that stop the mower from shooting trash in the user’s direction.

Best Electric Lawnmower Reviews

Gas mowers are more adept for thicker and tougher lawned areas and heavy work. Electric mowers are a good choice for smaller lawns, thanks to fewer fumes, low maintenance, and the ease of moving it (gas mowers tend to be bulkier). One of the best electric lawn mowers brands is one from Black and Decker, which have self propel options for easy usage, plus the 3 in 1 bagging, mulching and discharge options too if that is something you require or want.

Corded electric lawn mower reviews

The Black and Decker MM1800 is one of the best corded electric lawn mowers going around. The cord is quite long, and it has a 12amp motor to give a powerful cut. It also has both mulching and bagging options. The GreenWorks 25022 is also one worth checking out, read our review of it here.

Again, because of the limitations of the cord, an electric corded lawnmower would be suitable for smaller and well-kept lawns, because it does not have enough power for bigger or tougher types of grass.

If your yard has trees and other obstacles in it, the cord will get in the way, which can be a significant cause of frustration. Long cords are also quite a hazard, especially if you happen to trip and fall. So it all depends if your lawn is smooth or bumpy and uneven.

The remarkable thing is that they are noiseless, and some of the best-corded lawn mowers are also some of the lightest, which means little hard work on your part to move it around or to turn it.

Because of their direct connection with an AC supply, they usually have more power than the battery mowers, so they pack the features of the gas run lawnmowers too.

Best Battery-powered lawn mower

Instead of the annoying cord getting in your way, you can have these mowers which are powered by a battery. However, your mowing time will depend on the battery life. Self-propelled mowers are more comfortable to run but will eat up more of the battery life.

Considered the finest battery-operated mower is one from Black and Decker, the SPCM1936.

It gives a 45 to 60 minutes of battery life, which means it is best suited to lawns ranging in size from 1/3 acre or less. The charging time is roughly 12 hours, which is something to bear in mind. But they save on the gas and maintenance costs, and also the issue of gaseous fumes, which are no good for anyone’s health.

If you are looking for the best battery lawnmower, one of the things to look out for is to make sure that the deck is made of polymer. This will ensure it lasts longer and does not rust.

You should also purchase one that has appropriate and easy to read battery life indicators, and can have the height adjusted by the touch of a button or pull of a lever.

Bigger batteries generally have more torque, power, and battery life, so here, size does matter! But remember, too many hills to climb, or the extra effort in mulching can cause it to run quicker. Ultimately, it all depends on what you want.

Top-rated electric lawn mowers

As I mentioned before, certain types of lawnmowers are suited to a specific type of lawn surfaces and appearance. However, even within the electric type, there are many varieties that you need to consider when buying them.

The functionality of the mower can become very limited if the battery is slow to charge, or burns out too quickly, or if the power is not enough for a good cut, or the cord is too small, or the indicator is not clear.

The best electric mowers from well-reputed brands eliminate this kind of issue, which is why they are mostly recommendable for buyers.

An example is a corded mower from GreenWorks 25022. Features include:-

  • 12 amp electric motor
  • wider deck (20 inches) for quicker cuts
  • 7 height adjustment options handled from a single lever from 1.5 to 3.75 inches
  • Bagging, discharge and mulching options
  • At 56 pounds, it is just a bit heavy, but can be easily dealt with

It costs 174.99. The others that I checked within this range have shorter decks or fewer powerful motors. Plus, with the GreenWorks 25022, there is a four-year warranty, which is greater than that offered by many other companies.

In the cordless category, I have already mentioned the Black and Decker SPCM1936, which costs around 349. It has a 19-inch deck and a 36-volt battery.

Most reviews suggest that the battery charge is sufficient for mowing small lawns and that it lasts the distance. It should also be noted that the charging does not take much time.

One of the best parts is that you can charge another battery to be swapped in for bigger lawns. It is made of a very durable polymer, and unlike other mowers, you don’t have to adjust each wheel individually, but rather at a single touch.

The run time is also greater than some of the other mowers too. It seems to be the best electric lawnmower in town.

Electric vs. Gas Lawn Mower Reviews

As I’ve been pointing out from the start, electric mowers save up on gas consumption. This means two things:-

1) You save on cost The current cost of gas in the US is about 3.49 per gallon. Lawn mowing burns about 5 gallons of gas on average for residents owning one-third acre of lawn. An estimate by Yale University shows that the US consumes more than 6 million gallons for mowing and trimming activities of their lawns. That’s undoubtedly a lot of savings considering the cost of maintenance as well.

2) You save the environment Running a 4 HP gas mower for about an hour produces as many pollutants as an average car between 100 and 200 miles an hour. Therefore, for many US households, this means an environment is saving and also a much lesser carbon footprint.

Other pros include lesser noise pollution and a smaller, lighter mower to run. So if you wake up on an early morning and want to trim your lawn, you don’t need to care what the neighbors will say. Nor will you or your kids inhale the nasty fumes.

Therefore, these types of mowers are surely easy on the conscience. The biggest con is the hassle of recharging for bigger lawns and the higher power requirement for tougher and longer types of grasses.

So I’ve shown you the benefit of using electric mowers in certain types of situations, and how they use one mower might vary highly from one house to another. If you have a small lawn, your savings from gas will be too little to make it worthwhile to buy the expensive electric mower.

However, if your lawn is large, the issue with continuous recharging will test and challenge you, unless you buy an additional battery and swap it when one dies out. But since the charging time is about 12 hours, again, it will require some forethought on your part.

Unfortunately, it’s not a case of just getting up and deciding to mow the lawn today. It needs to be planned, so you need to know if you are up for this kind of challenge.

However, the optimal lawn size targeted for electric mowers is about one-third acre. A single battery charge quickly covers this.

Also, if your lawn is on a hilly, bumpy area, the corded mower will be a severe drawback. If you let your grass grow wild, and if you leave it off for days, that is again a problem, because, after all, gas mowers are more powerful.

Too often, people complain that their electric mower broke down too soon and didn’t last as long as expected. It all boils down to how wisely you decide for your lawn. Electric mowers also come with lesser parts, which means great ease of assembly.

Many people are really starting to get used to the idea and see the self-propelled cordless lawn mowers as the future of the industry.

Whenever batteries are developed that can last longer and longer; the gas mowers will inevitably be phased out of the scenario. However, there will always be a need for them with golf courses, parkland, hotel lawns, etc.

Whether you’re looking to save money on fuel or do your small part to save the environment, battery-powered lawn mowers are an easy way to do so without sacrificing function. Battery-powered mowers are cordless, don’t use gasoline, and are typically best for small to medium-sized yards.

There are a few important factors to consider when looking for the best battery-powered lawn mower, according to Nicole Durden, senior merchant of outdoor power at The Home Depot.

“Be mindful of the size of your yard,” she advises, since over half an acre will require more battery power. “Consider the terrain and the drive system on the mower. Customers with steep or hilly yards should consider a self-propelled mower.”

Best Self-Propelled Push Mower

EGO Power Select Cut 56-Volt 21-Inch Self-Propelled Cordless Lawn Mower

We’ve chosen the Ego Power LM2101SP Cordless Lawn Mower as the best self-propelled push lawn mower because it is easy to use, thanks to a powerful self-propel feature that makes it perfect for small- to medium-sized yards.

Self-propelled mowers use the motor to propel the mower forward, which means it takes less of an effort on the user’s part to cut the grass. During our testing, we noted that it may be ideal for those with limited strength or mobility since it doesn’t require as much muscle use as other push mowers.

It has six different height settings for lawn mower blades, which range from 1.5 inches to 4 inches. While testing, we found that it was simple to adjust the cutting height, the propelling speed, and the height of the handle with just one hand. It comes with LED lights, so if you are looking to beat the heat and mow your lawn before the sun rises or as it is setting, you will still be able to see what you’re cutting.

This lawn mower offers 60 minutes of run time on a single charge with a 56 volt 7.5Ah ARC lithium battery. This means that it is best suited for a small to medium-sized yard of 0.5 acres.

This unit made our list not only for its cutting capabilities, but also its disposal option. It offers three options for use: mulching, side discharge, or bagging. Although we loved having options for disposal, we found that attaching the bag for disposal was not an easy task on our own as it would sometimes pop off on one side as we pulled it tight to attach to the other—we think having an extra set of hands could be beneficial.

One feature we loved was this mower’s storage capability. Whereas some mowers can take up quite a bit of space in your garage or outdoor shed, the Ego Power Mower can fold in order to be stored away.

For a push mower, it’s lightweight at 37.5 pounds—as light as our pick for best lightweight mower. Some lawn mowers on this list weigh as much as 66 pounds.

With this mower, even though you have to do the work of pushing it around the yard, it makes the task much less difficult. It also has five height adjustments to choose from, this lawn mower can cut from 1.25 inches to 3.375 inches.

When it comes to mowing, it’s important to have a plan when it comes to handling your clippings, and this lawn mower offers options for both mulching and rear bagging. It even comes with a collection bag, should you choose to use it.

Keep in mind that this battery-powered lawn mower only has 45 minutes of run time on a full charge. Its 16-inch deck width also means that you clip less grass per pass, so it could take longer to mow your yard.

If you don’t have a small yard, this could present a problem, as you’ll have to pause to recharge. The good news is, the battery reaches full power after two hours.

Best Lightweight

BlackDecker 40V Max 16 inch Cordless Lawn Mower

We chose the BlackDecker Cordless Lawn Mower because it is affordable, and it is only 38 pounds, which makes it easy to maneuver around your yard. The mower’s technology also makes it simple to use as it determines the height of your grass and adjusts accordingly to increase power and preserve battery life.

Because it’s lightweight, it is also a pretty compact model, with handles that fold down to make storage simpler. Additionally, this model has carrying handles that make moving it easy. It’s the best battery-powered lawn mower for people who need a mower that is lightweight and convenient to carry.

This battery-powered lawn mower has plenty of practical features as well, and includes six cutting heights that range from 1 inch to 3 inches, and the single lever height adjustment is easy to use.

It also has a 9.5 gallon grass bag, which is attached to the back of the mower. The bag is made of soft fabric with a hard top, and it’s simple to check its capacity with a simple tap on the soft fabric.

With a 16-inch deck, plus a 30-minute run time, it can mow yards up to 0.125 acres big. If you have a yard larger than this, you’ll find yourself either switching out batteries (it does come with two) or stopping to recharge them.

Best Push Mower

Ryobi 40V HP Brushless 21-Inch Dual-Blade Self-Propelled Mower

The Ryobi 40V HP Brushless 21-Inch Mower is our choice for best battery-powered push mower because it is intuitive to use with self-propelled technology that makes it possible to intuitively adjust the speed, plus it has options for clipping disposal.

We found that it took a bit to get used to maneuvering this lawn mower over uneven ground, as we needed to change the blade height in order to keep it from getting stuck. Otherwise, it was extremely easy to use, even on grass that was 6 inches high. The yard tested typically takes 45 minutes to mow, and this battery-powered lawn mower managed to get it done in 20 minutes.

We were able to use the mower three times, each round ranging from 10 to 15 minutes, without having to charge the battery, which holds a charge for up to 70 minutes. The Ryobi 40V HP Brushless 21-Inch Mower uses two 6.0Ah batteries, which are powerful and carry a longer charge than your average lawn mower battery, which can range from 45 to 60 minutes of run time.

This lawn mower has the option of disposing of clippings via mulching, bagging, or side-discharging, which we loved while testing because it’s possible to decide which type of disposal based on each user’s unique needs. When we mowed the test lawn for the first time, we found that we had to empty the bag quite a bit, due to the height of the grass, even though it was only 0.05 acres.

We appreciated that this mower was quiet compared to other lawn mowers we tested. During testing, we noticed that it didn’t sound much louder than a noise machine. We also loved that this mower folds up so that it can be stored vertically, leaving floor space free in a garage or shed.

Best Riding

Ryobi 80V HP Brushless 42-Inch Battery Electric Cordless Zero Turn Riding Mower

If you’re looking to do less manual labor while tending to your lawn, a ride-on mower may be the best battery-powered mower for you, like the Ryobi Electric Ride-On Mower. This model can mow a large yard without needing to be recharged, and it has cruise control.

During testing, we found that this battery-powered ride-on lawn mower was intuitive to use and easy to operate with the use of a single joystick. This mower has three travel speeds and three blade speeds, which are able to be changed with push button controls. It also has an LCD screen that displays battery life and run time (so that you’re never surprised that it’s time to recharge).

This mower comes with two 80V and two 40V batteries that make it possible to mow 3 acres per charge, and the batteries can recharge fully in two and a half hours. If this mower is getting low on battery while in use, there’s no need to worry: When the battery drops below 35%, the mower automatically begins to preserve battery so that it can be driven back to wherever the extra batteries are being stored or charged.

We love that this ride-on mower is powerful, with the equivalent power of 31 horsepower, and 12 different cutting settings, ranging from 1.5 inches to 4.5 inches. Even with all those settings, there is also comfort in mind: the seat has premium seat suspension, which minimizes the feel of rough terrain. It also has cup holders, USB ports, and storage compartments. The option to mulch or side discharge clippings was also a plus.

As is the case with most ride-on mowers, comfort and convenience comes at a premium. However, if you have a large yard and are looking to keep it looking good while keeping environmentally friendly, it’s a worthy investment.

Best for Small Yards

Makita 36-Volt Lithium-Ion Push Lawn Mower

Our pick for best battery-powered lawn mower for small yards is the Makita Brushless Lawn Mower.

The Makita comes with four batteries, which power the mower for long enough to cut up to 0.33 acres of land in 43 minutes or less. It runs on two of those batteries at a time. Its brushless motor also allows you to cut grass faster at 2,500 to 3,300 rotations per minute.

The batteries are equipped with battery overload, overheat, and over-discharge protection, which help to extend the battery life by shutting it down before damage can occur.

Not looking to disturb your neighbors when you get up early to mow the lawn? The Makita Brushless Lawn Mower has a quiet mode that reduces noise by providing constant speed control.

With a single-lever, you can adjust the height of the mower to 10 different heights. The deck width of this mower is 19 inches, so it can cut up to 19 inches across of grass per pass of the lawn mower.

When it comes to your grass clippings, this lawn mower has a disposal bag that has a 16-gallon capacity—this means there isn’t the option for mulching or side-disposal.

Best with Storage

Ryobi 80V HP Brushless 42-Inch Electric Cordless Riding Lawn Tractor

  • We found that, because it does not have power steering, it takes some muscle to turn while going slowly.

After testing, we determined that the best battery-powered lawn mower with storage is the Ryobi 80V HP Brushless 42 in. Riding Lawn Tractor because it has two separate compartments. It’s great for someone who loves to landscape, as you can get more done than just mowing. We loved the large back storage area in particular, noting that it would make it easy to load up some bags of mulch to tote around your property.

When it came to actually mowing the lawn, we found that the Ryobi 80V HP Brushless 42 in. Riding Lawn Tractor was easy to maneuver, and we liked that it is able to change speeds easily to maneuver around obstacles, but can instantly speed up once past them.

It handled the lawn with ease, mowing over sticks, leaves, and more. We even took the lawn mower out in wet conditions, and it managed to mow grass without a problem. When the blades are on, it is still less noisy than a gas mower.

This mower has 13 height adjustments ranging from 1.5 inches to 4.5 inches, and we found that adjusting the height was simple with the use of a large lever on the side of the mower. We liked that we could get a close cut, even in wet conditions.

This ride-on lawn mower is able to side-discharge and mulch clippings, and is also capable of bagging. We only tested the side discharge and mulching capabilities, as the bagger is sold separately.

This mower also comes with a few safety features. It beeps while in reverse, as well as if the user hops off the seat while the mower is turned on. It also turns off the mowing deck while in reverse. While it does have headlights, we found that they are very small, and that we wouldn’t use them to mow in the dark.

Keep in mind that there is no power steering, and we found that we needed to use quite a bit of force when turning at a slow speed.

The Bottom Line

Overall, when looking for the best battery-powered lawn mower, you should consider the size of your yard, whether or not you’ll need more than one battery, and whether you want a push, self-propelled, or ride-on mower.

After testing, we chose the Ryobi Electric Ride-On Mower as the best ride-on mower because it is easy to use and can mow up to 3 acres in a single charge, making it a great choice for a large yard. Our pick for best push mower was from the same brand: the Ryobi 40V HP Brushless 21 in. Self-Propelled Mower because it has an impressive 70 minutes of runtime on a single charge plus multiple options for clipping disposal.

Our Testing Process

In order to find the best battery-powered lawn mowers, we tested 15 mowers, narrowing down our results to determine which of these battery-powered favorites made our list. First, we recorded how long it took to assemble each mower straight out of the box.

Then, we mowed our lawns with each mower three times, noting the date, weather conditions, how much we cut off the grass in inches, how much surface area we were mowing in acres, and how long it took for us to mow that area.

As we used each mower, we considered many factors. We began with the ease of starting and powering the mower, plus the ease of adjusting the seat (if a ride-on mower) or heights for comfort, and whether or not the controls were user friendly.

With the riding mowers, we also took note of how easy it was to adjust our speed, as well as how easy it was to switch between cutting heights and how many options there were. We also evaluated how each mower compared to those that we previously owned or tried.

One of the most important aspects of a battery-powered lawn mower is its power source. We determined how many batteries came with the mower, how long they took to charge, and how long that battery lasted before we had to swap it or recharge it.

We also tested each mower’s ease of movement, observing how they performed when maneuvering around obstacles like trees, flowerbeds, and tough terrain like hills or inclines.

When it came to how well the mowers discharged the clippings, we noted if they discharged, collected debris in a bag, or mulched them. Some models performed more than one function, and if that was the case, we tested each type of discharge method, and how easy it was to insert or remove collection bags (if applicable). We also observed how much storage each model had and how they would eventually be stored away.

Finally, we tried each mower’s features. On the riding mowers, we tested their ignition cut-off switches, wheel weights, and headlights, or reflective surfaces. For push mowers, we tested the handle lever, back flap, and blade brake control. We also evaluated the cutting height options, plus various speeds of each mower. If possible, we even tested these lawn mowers on other lawns, to see how the experience differed depending on type of grass and terrain.

What to Know About Battery-Powered Lawn Mowers Before Shopping

Lawn Size

When shopping for the best battery-powered lawn mower for your home, it’s important to take into consideration the size of your lawn. Typically, the batteries in your mower will last 50 to 60 minutes on one charge, so you’ll want to make sure you can cover the distance of your lawn in that time.

Otherwise you’ll have to either change out the battery for a fully charged back-up, or charge your battery. If you have a yard that is more than an acre, it’s not ideal to have a battery-powered mower unless you have one that is made with large yards in mind.

Type

There are a few different types of battery-powered lawn mower to choose from: self-propelled mowers, push mowers, and ride-on mowers.

Self-propelled mowers are less work to operate than push mowers, with a design that uses the motor to propel the wheels, which makes it easy for you to simply guide the mower across your lawn.

In order to operate a push mower, you have to push it forward manually. The bad news: You’re the one doing the pushing. The good news: most models are compact and lighter weight (especially when compared to a gas model) so it isn’t too difficult.

Ride-on mowers require the least amount of work, but are also the most expensive models. They are a great choice for people with larger lawns, and you can simply sit up top and steer it where you want it to go.

Charge Time

Battery-powered mowers need to be charged before use, and those times will vary. We found that the time it takes to recharge varies anywhere from 1 to 2.5 hours. For example, our best riding mower pick, the Ryobi 80V HP Brushless 42 in. Zero Turn Riding Mower, takes 2.5 hours to reach full charge. If you don’t have the time to pause your mowing to recharge, consider choosing a mower with an extra battery so you can change them out and continue on.

Power

Battery-powered lawn mowers do not require chords to function. Instead, they work using rechargeable batteries that have an output of anywhere from 36 to 120 volts.

Run time is largely dependent on the voltage of your battery. The higher the battery, the longer your mower will run. The higher the voltage, the larger the battery, so it may affect your mower’s deck size.

The deck is the part of the lawn mower that covers the engine and blades of the mower. It is measured in square inches, and is determined by multiplying the width of the bottom part of your mower (between the wheels) by the length. They are also usually made with durable material so they stand up against debris and the elements.

The size of the deck determines how much grass the machine will cut in one pass, as it is generally large enough to cover the blade. Smaller mowers may only have one blade, while larger models have two or three for more efficient cutting.

Mowers with larger decks offer less mobility, so it’s beneficial to use a mower with a smaller deck and voltage for a yard with less acreage. The larger your yard, the bigger the deck you’ll require because you’ll need to cover more ground in the same amount of time.

Features

The best battery-powered lawn mowers come with plenty of features to make your lawn-cutting experiences as enjoyable as possible. For example, some come with mulchers that take the grass, chop it up, and leave them behind on the lawn. Others have a grass bag catcher that attaches to the mower on either the side or rear where the clippings drop straight into the bag.

Another feature that is important is the ability to adjust the blade height so that you can tailor your mower to your preferences. They usually range from 1 to 4 inches, and keep in mind that you should only remove the top third of the grass blades.

Adjustable handles are also important because they allow you to change the height in order to make them easier to mow.

Other Battery-Powered Lawn Mowers We Tested

Greenworks Pro 80V Max, 21-Inch Self-Propelled Cordless Lawn Mower

We loved that the Greenworks Pro 80V Max, 21-Inch Self-Propelled Cordless Lawn Mower lawn mower had a space-saving storage design that allowed it to be stowed away vertically. We also appreciated how long the battery lasted—about 50 minutes total.

While testing, we found that this lawn mower had difficulty maneuvering in tight spots, and its weight made it difficult to turn. When we switched it to the self-propel mode, we found that even the fastest setting did not measure up to others on this list.

Your Questions, Answered

How long do batteries last in a battery-powered mower?

This answer depends on the mower, but typically the batteries in a battery-powered mower last around 50 minutes to an hour if fully charged. This is why battery-powered mowers are recommended for small to medium-sized yards—if you can’t get your mowing done within an hour, you’ll need to hit pause, plug it in to charge (or replace it with another fully charged battery if you’ve got a spare), and wait to mow.

What is the best voltage for a battery-powered mower?

The batteries in battery-powered lawn mowers provide anywhere from 36 to 120 volts of power. The higher the voltage, the longer the run time. The longer the run time, the more time you have to cover some distance in your yard before that battery runs out.

Getting a battery with a high voltage may sound Smart because it allows for a longer run time. However, it also makes the machine heavier which can slow you down and can decrease the run time.

Fix underpowered lawn mower and increase battery life

Which mower is better: battery-powered, electric, or gas?

Battery-powered, electric, and gas lawn mowers each have their own pros and cons. Gas powered mowers have the advantage when it comes to being able to fuel them right away. When an electric or battery-powered mower runs out of juice, it needs to be plugged in and charged.

“Battery-powered lawn mowers provide the power of traditional lawn mowers without the harmful emissions, which make them perfect for customers that value efficiency and sustainability,” Durden says.

Gas mowers also tend to require more maintenance in order to run smoothly, and you need to take care to store the fuel properly and even winterize your mower.

Battery-powered lawn mowers have the advantage of being “lightweight and quieter than gas-powered mowers, too,” says Durden. You just need to remember to keep the battery charged.

Additionally, whereas gas-powered mowers need to be pulled or cranked, and cared for to ensure they’re winterized, you just need to push to start a battery-powered or electric mower and go.

One downside to an electric mower is the range of motion—you may be limited by the cord. Battery powered and electric mowers are more equipped to handle small to medium-sized yards.

Although gas-powered lawn mowers have their place on large lawns that require maximum power and runtime, their messy fuel mixes, harmful fumes, and environmental effects have many seeking another option. Luckily, electric lawn mowers don’t have these issues.

Advancements in battery design and capacity have made electric mowers a practical alternative to gas-powered machines, with long running times, quiet operation, and lightweight design. Perhaps most convenient of all, electric mowers feature push-button start mechanisms, which means no more frustrating pull cords.

All the mowers in this guide are either battery-powered or corded models that can be plugged into a standard home power outlet. These corded options are perfect for small yards that don’t require the portability of cordless options. Battery-powered models are a bit more versatile, though you’ll find that battery life varies. If you have a large yard or an incline, keeping two sets of batteries charged and ready may be necessary if you want to mow the entire space in one session. Just keep in mind that electric mowers won’t be as powerful as gas versions and aren’t ideal for extremely thick grass or brush.

We included the electric lawn mowers below based on several factors, including versatility, power, battery life, features, and overall performance. They’re available at various price points, so you should be able to find something that works for your budget and needs.

Best electric lawn mower overall: Ego LM2102SP 21-inch Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

Pros: Powerful motor, quiet operation, Rapid-charging battery, foldable upright storage, headlights, good warranty

Cons: Batteries are expensive to replace (or stock spares)

Featuring a powerful 7.5 Ah battery, the 56-Volt Ego LM2102SP 21-inch Self-Propelled Lawn Mower offers the performance of gas in a convenient, cordless electric design. Its functionality and ease of use made it an easy choice for our top pick.

A three-in-one design allows you to choose between mulching, bagging, and side discharge of your grass cuttings, and the battery provides 60 minutes of runtime on a single charge. The push-button start makes it easy to start mowing right away, and thanks to a pair of LED headlights, you can safely mow at dusk or on overcast days.

The self-propelling feature of this mower also offers variable speed control, so you can customize it to whatever pace you prefer. A large, easy-to-use lever by the handle makes it simple to adjust these speeds. If you feel like getting some exercise, you can disengage this feature and push the mower manually.

We’re also big fans of the six cutting heights offered by the Ego LM2102SP allowing you to precisely set your preferred height from 1.5 to 4 inches. Although the 165-pound weight is heavier than similar models, the fold-up design is extremely convenient, especially if your garage or tool shed is tight on space. This mower comes with great warranty options that are slightly on the generous side compared with others.

Best electric mulching lawn mower: Toro 21356 Recycler SmartStow Cordless Lawn Mower

Pros: Fast to charge, wide range of blade position options

Cons: Expensive

Mulching your grass while you mow allows you to reuse those valuable clippings instead of throwing them away with the rest of your yard waste. These mulched clippings break down and release nutrients back into your lawn, which both benefits your grass and makes less work for you after you’re finished. If you’d prefer not to mulch, you can also use the Toro Recycler as a bagging mower.

The mower uses a single 60V battery to power its 21-inch blade, and the brushless motor help it to operate as efficiently as possible. This should help increase the lifespan of the mower motor itself. The Toro Recycler’s runtime is about 45 minutes, which should be sufficient for medium-sized yards up to 1/3 acre. It can fully recharge in 2.5 hours.

You can adjust the handle of the Toro Recycler to two different positions, making it convenient for those who want to customize their mower to their specific height. This handle also completely folds down when the mower is not in use, so you’ll be able to store it vertically or potentially under a worktable.

Nine height settings allow for a wide range of positions. With a minimum cutting height of 1.25 inches, you can get very low. The steel deck of this mower is also more durable than other plastic or composite models and should hold up well under regular wear and tear.

Best budget electric lawn mower: Greenworks 25022 20-Inch 12-Amp Corded Lawn Mower

Pros: Seven-position height adjustment, foldable handles, four-year warranty

Cons: Corded design limits reach

Electric mowers don’t have to be costly, and the Greenworks 20-Inch Corded Lawn Mower is proof. This mower, offered at a budget-friendly price, still has plenty of bells and whistles and impressive performance. Its 20-inch steel deck offers durability, and the 12-amp, 120-volt motor (effectively 1440 watts) is powerful enough for easy mowing.

The mower includes three-in-one mulching, side discharge, and rear bag functions. It also offers a seven-position height adjustment, allowing you to choose cutting heights between 1.5 and 3.75 inches. The push-button start makes for easy operation, and the foldable handles allow for convenient storage or transportation.

This mower weighs just 56 pounds, so it’s relatively easy to push. While it’s a fairly basic design, this mower is suitable for homeowners or renters with smaller lawns, provided there’s access to a power outlet.

Best electric riding lawn mower: Ryobi RY48111 38-Inch Battery Electric Rear Engine Riding Lawn Mower

Pros: Excellent battery power, full of features, capable of large jobs

Cons: Requires more storage space than push mowers, higher price point

The Ryobi RY48111 38-Inch Battery Electric Rear Engine Riding Lawn Mower is a quality piece of equipment that pairs durable construction with the benefits of electric power. The steel frame houses a generous 38-inch blade deck, and three high-torque brushless motors provide maximized cutting power.

Assessing power is trickier because Ryobi doesn’t offer the same information as the other brands featured within this guide. Still, the 48-volt battery can last for about two hours or 2 acres of mowing time on a single charge so you can get plenty of work done quickly.

This mower is full of features. The seat is adjustable for your comfort, and the control panel is conveniently located for accessibility. The 12-point deck height adjustment gives you nuanced control over your mowing height, and its LED headlights allow for evening work. There’s also cruise control and USB charging. A cup holder and cell phone holder round out this machine’s excellent design.

This mower offers plenty of advantages over traditional gas-powered variants. With no belts, spark plugs, or filters, it’s a low-maintenance option. If you’re looking for an alternative to gas-powered riding mowers, the Ryobi is reliable, powerful, and quiet.

Best electric mower for small yards: Sun Joe MJ401E-PRO Electric Lawn Mower

Pros: Lightweight, 10.6-gallon collection bag, low price

Cons: Too small for larger yards, only three height settings

The Sun Joe MJ401E-PRO electric lawn mower may not have the portability or width to be a practical option for larger yards, but its compact design and easy-to-use operation make it ideal for small or medium-sized ones. The relatively narrow width also makes it convenient to maneuver around tight landscaping elements like rocks or other obstacles that require more precision than a larger mower offers.

One reason I chose the Sun Joe for this list is that I appreciate anything that improves operation safety, especially involving lawn mowers. This model requires you to press the safety lock button and simultaneously pull the on trigger to power it up. It reduces the chance of you starting the mower unintentionally.

Because of the 14-inch cutting width, this compact mower is also well-suited for those who have limited storage space. It’s also incredibly lightweight. At just 29 pounds, it’s comfortable to use and makes its lack of self-propelling mechanism less of an issue.

I’ve used Sun Joe products in the past and have found them to be straightforward to operate. The user manual provides a clear diagram of how to effectively mow with a corded model and prevent running over your extension cord.

The Sun Joe MJ401E-PRO features three height settings, which is less than our other options. But if you are just looking for a hassle-free mower, this mower could be the perfect fit.

How we rate electric lawn mowers

After extensive online research from expert sources like Thriving Yard, we assembled this list of the best electric mowers you can buy. We also used our experience with large power tools to help evaluate battery life, runtimes, and power output.

Although we did not test all the options we chose, we reviewed owner and operation manuals, watched online tutorials, and consulted with lawn care equipment experts. We then used this information to create our five categories and choose the best option for each one.

We also used a set of specific criteria to help us evaluate and compare potential options.

  • Battery Capacity: For cordless options, we paid close attention to the Ah (amp hour) of the included battery. In short, the higher the Ah, the more energy the battery can store, the higher power output, and the longer it will last.
  • Charging Time: The time it takes to recharge a depleted battery can seriously affect the convenience of a cordless mower. If your battery can be recharged quickly, you’ll be able to get back to work soon, and there’s less of a chance that you’ll need to purchase a second battery.
  • Runtime: Overall runtime per battery charge is probably the most important metric to consider when evaluating cordless mowers — obviously corded models will provide the longest. The longer the runtime, the better, especially for larger mowers that will be purchased to use on larger lawns.
  • Weight: The lighter the mower weighs, the less effort it will place on the battery and the longer the overall runtime. We did our best to always choose lighter options whenever possible while still taking overall power into consideration.

What else we considered

Ego Power LM2101 56-V 20-Inch Cordless Lawn Mower: This was our previous top pick. Although it is a great option, we ultimately decided that its replacement, the EGO LM2102SP 21-inch Self-Propelled Lawn Mower and its self-propelled design, was a better fit. If a self-propelled option isn’t important to you, this Ego mower would be a great choice for anyone with a relatively high budget who is looking for a high-quality battery-powered mower.

Worx WR165 Landroid: The high price of this robotic lawnmower kept it off our list. But if the 950 price tag isn’t an issue, it could be a good fit for anyone looking to explore a unique mower option. Similar to a Roomba, this mower navigates entirely on its own and automatically adjusts the height of the blade to account for uneven terrain. It wouldn’t be practical for anything larger than 1/8-acre, though, so keep that in mind.

Electric lawn mower FAQs

How long do electric lawn mowers last?

Battery-powered mowers themselves can last up to 10 years, but their batteries will only last about 4 years before they’re unable to hold an effective charge. To ensure your batteries will last as long as possible, try to completely deplete the battery before recharging it. This will reduce the overall number of charging cycles placed on the battery, increasing its lifespan. You should also do your best to remove the battery from the charger once it’s fully charged.

Corded mowers have a similar lifespan as long as they’re cared for properly. There are no batteries to worry about, but their extension cords are just as important to pay attention to. This means using the correct gauge for the job, which indicates how thick the cord is. The thicker the cord, the more voltage will reach the mower and the less unnecessary work the motor has to do. Your mower’s operating manual should tell you the best gauge for the job.

How expensive are electric lawn mowers?

Electric lawn mowers are available at a wide range of prices, although corded models tend to be cheaper than battery-powered options. Corded mowers also won’t require any additional battery purchases over time. Size also plays a part. Large riding mowers can cost thousands of dollars, while smaller, compact machines, like the Sun Joe MJ401E-PRO, our recommendation for small yards, can be found for about 140.

Neither requires the fuel or oil that gas-powered models do, which should cut down on the overall expense of the mower. However, the long-term cost of replacement batteries — which can cost hundreds of dollars — should be considered as well.

Is it safe to cut wet grass with an electric mower?

According to the Ego mower manual, you should avoid cutting wet grass with your electric mower for two reasons. First, the moisture can affect the electrical components of the mower and cause serious damage not covered by the warranty. Secondly, using your mower on wet grass is a potential safety hazard and can cause you to slip or fall and potentially injure yourself.

Wet grass can also present maintenance and cleaning challenges. It can become stuck on the deck and other components, and unlike gas-powered mowers, you can’t just spray it off with a hose. As long as you stick to cutting dry grass, you’ll have a much easier time cleaning up.

Can you leave an electric lawn mower outside?

Due to the electrical components and vulnerable batteries, we don’t recommend leaving your mower outdoors when it’s not in use. Both Ego and Greenworks recommend keeping their electric mowers indoors in a cool, dry space. They also state that you should never cover them with a plastic tarp, which can trap moisture that can damage the internal components. If you need to keep your mower outside, keep it elevated and off the ground. This will allow air to flow around it and prevent unnecessary moisture damage.
