The standard setup sequence is shown in the instructions. In order to adjust the carburetor for maximum performance and economy, you must first clean the air intake filter and warm up the engine to operating temperature.
The main reasons for the drop in thrust, excessive smoke, increased consumption of the fuel mixture are eliminated by changing the quality and quantity of the fuel-air emulsion by adjusting screws.
Worthy competition for this model are household chainsaws of the same type in power and application from leading European and Asian manufacturers. On the Russian market there are Husqvarna 236 X-TORQ, Oleo-Mac GS 35C-14, Hyundai X 380 and MTD GCS 3800/35 models identical in their basic parameters.
Removing and disassembling the engine
The engine is held in place by 4 screws installed on the bottom of the Stihl 180 chainsaw. To remove, unscrew them, then carefully remove the engine from the seat and the rubber pipe of the carburetor.
To disassemble the engine, 4 crankcase screws are unscrewed, and it is removed, then you can remove the crankshaft assembly with oil seals, bearings and piston rings.
Removing bearings and seals usually does not require additional tools, but if the bearings were pressed onto the shaft with force, then a special puller will be needed for dismantling.
To remove the piston from the connecting rod, you will need to remove the locking ring from the seat using a thin screwdriver, then the piston pin is squeezed out from the opposite side, after which the piston is retracted to the side.
Carburetor, muffler and ignition coil
To remove the carburetor, it is necessary to have a head 8 and an extension, with which it is convenient to unscrew the nuts securing the carburetor and air filter. Before dismantling the carburetor, it is necessary to disconnect the ignition wire and the choke rod from the engine control lever and remove the lever, only then the air filter and carburetor are removed.
The Stihl 180 muffler is attached with two nuts, by unscrewing which you need to pull it towards you, it can be easily removed.
The coil is mounted on two screws, to remove you just need to unscrew them.
Dismantling the clutch and oil pump drive
Remove the drive sprocket before disassembling the clutch. To do this, carefully remove the lock washer from the grooves on the shaft and remove the sprocket and needle bearing.
With a high head 19, it is necessary to unscrew the clutch. The thread on it is left-handed, so it unscrews towards the tire, and not the back of the Stihl 180 saw.
Having untwisted and removed the clutch, you need to immediately remove the reflective plate and the oil pump drive, this is easy to do, because they are put on the shaft without any fastening.
Removing the flywheel
The flywheel of the Stihl 180 chainsaw is twisted with great effort, so a head with a metal knob is required to remove it. The nut holding the flywheel is unscrewed by the head by 13.
To block the crankshaft from turning, you need to unscrew the spark plug and install the piston stopper through the spark plug hole, if it is not there, you can use the old starter cord, with knots imposed on it and immersed in the cylinder through the spark plug hole.
After the piston is locked in the cylinder, you can unscrew the flywheel nut. The thread in the nut is ordinary, so you need to turn it to the left. Having loosened the nut, it is not necessary to remove it to the end, it is enough to unscrew it until its upper edge is equal to the tip of the shaft, after which a soft metal drift is installed on the nut and a sharp blow is made on it. Thus, the flywheel from a sharp impact jumps off the shaft and can be easily removed without the help of additional tools.
Stihl MS 180 is a reliable and undemanding tool, alas, when it requires repair, as well as no matter what equipment. Next, let’s see how the Stihl chainsaw is disassembled ms 180, which is necessary if the passage of a half engine repair.
Repair of any equipment should begin with a preliminary work step, and the Stihl 180 saw is no exception. At the preliminary step, before the Stihl 180 chainsaw is disassembled, you need to remove the side cover, chain and tire from the chainsaw. Then, using a compressor and a brush, you need to clean the chainsaw from dirt, sawdust, oil drips and the rest.
When cleaning the saw, special attention should be paid to the place where the chain saw drive sprocket is located, since this is the dirtiest area.
In places with a huge accumulation of oil, can be washed with spotless gasoline.
The concrete disassembly of the Stihl 180 begins with the removal of the handle, which is attached to the body of the chainsaw using 3 rubber shock absorbers. To remove, you need to remove the plastic plugs from the inner cavity of the shock absorbers, then, using a strong screwdriver, first squeeze the upper shock absorber, later the one that is closer to the rear handle.
In the back of the handle there is a gas trigger, which is connected to the carburetor through a wire rod, in order to be able to disconnect the rod from the gas trigger, you need to unscrew two screws and disassemble the handle.
When the handle remains on one shock absorber, you need to unscrew the chainsaw body from the inside of the handle and twist to the side, remove the body from the last rubber band.
Next, the upper housing cover is removed and the 4 starter mounting screws are unscrewed, then you need to remove the oil tank and fuel barrel covers. The starter is removed quite easily and problems should not appear.

Chainsaw ignition system
If the tool does not start, then the problem may be hidden in the starter mechanism or in the ignition system. In the event that the starting device works normally, then it is necessary to carefully inspect the spark plug. It needs to be unscrewed and carefully inspected.
If the ignition system works normally, but the tool does not work properly, then the problem may be associated with an excess of air-fuel mixture. Here you need to adjust the carburetor and clean the jets.
Do-it-yourself chainsaw carburetor adjustment
If during the inspection, carbon deposits were found on the spark plug, this means that the tool runs on low-quality gasoline. Also, the reason for this may be a malfunctioning carburetor.
To solve such a problem, you need to take the following steps:
- Remove the carburetor and check it;
- If necessary, clean and adjust it;
- Change fuel;
- Install the carburetor and check the tool in operation.
Attention: the chainsaw should only work with the fuel specified in the instructions. The use of low-quality fuel will lead to various malfunctions.
With this information, you can repair your Stihl 180 chainsaw at home. Of course, you need to take into account that it is better to eliminate more serious malfunctions in service centers.

If, as a result of inspection, a violation of the integrity of the hose was determined, then it is replaced. If the damage is minor, then it can be hidden with a sealant. This radical way will reduce the cost of repairs.
If, as a result of the pressure on the gas, the chainsaw starts to stall, then the problem lies in the carburetor. Also, a sign of a malfunction of the carburetor may be a protracted start of the chainsaw and the impossibility of speeding up.
Most often, such a malfunction occurs as a result of wear of the rubber cuff, which is located on the piston of the fuel booster. As a result, air is sucked in when starting the tool. Basically, such a breakdown occurs after several years of using the chainsaw.
The elimination of this malfunction is carried out in the following sequence:
- Remove the carburetor. Remove the screw that holds the membrane cover. Turn the carburetor so that the pin is visible. From it you need to remove the retaining ring and disconnect the air damper spring. After that, the throttle valve. To do this, unscrew the screw that holds it. The next step is to remove the damper axis.
- Pull out accelerator with spring. It has a cuff. The wear of this particular element leads to air leakage and engine stalling after a recent start. Cuff piston needs to be replaced.
- Assemble the carburetor in reverse order and install it on the chainsaw.

How to repair a Stihl 180 chainsaw yourself: controls for eliminating defects
Often in the Stihl 180 chainsaw, the oil system is damaged. You can find such a malfunction by the dryness of the working circuit or the presence of a leak.
The solution to this difficulty must begin with a painstaking inspection of the hose where the oil is supplied. The connection of the hose with the fittings is also amenable to inspection.
During the inspection and repair of the oil, which allows you to keep accounting (software), you also need to clean the filter. Often its contamination leads to poor oil flow.
If there is an oil leak, it means that the tightness in the system is broken. This immediately applies to the hose and oil channels. In most cases, such malfunctions appear upon completion of mechanical damage to parts of the accounting system.
