How to dilute oil with gasoline for a lawnmower

How much oil to put in a grass trimmer per liter of gasoline

Gasoline mowers. quite common tools used by garden and homestead owners for mowing grass and making hay. common names for tools are the terms “grass trimmer” and “lawnmower“. The main difference is hidden in the design of the motor. the expensive segment of the devices is equipped with four-stroke models, and the cheap ones. two-stroke. The latter option has advantages, including low weight, ease of use, and low cost.

The most important condition for the work of two-stroke models. is the preparation of the fuel mixture, based on the manufacturer’s defined proportion of gasoline and oil. The simplified design of the motor does not provide a separate channel for lubrication, so engine oil is added directly to the gasoline. Violation of the correct proportion leads to a significant reduction in the resource of the tool and even to its failure. Let’s understand what composition is required for gasoline trimmers, how to properly prepare the mixture and what it can affect.

Choice of gasoline for grass trimmer

For some reason everyone prefers to choose a gasoline brand for brushcutter at his discretion. This is an erroneous approach, because, first of all, you need to carefully study the instructions, where the manufacturer’s recommendations on the choice of fuel type are given. But it is not a guarantee either, because unleaded fuel can be sold under different brands (which differ in many manufacturers), with significantly different composition. Therefore, it is necessary to be guided by the main characteristics to choose gasoline for a particular model of trimmer for grass.

Manufacturers of gasoline tool manufacturers recommend using gasoline brand AI-92, but for more expensive types will need fuel with a higher octane number. AI-95. Any brand, the marking of which appears the number 90 or less, not suitable for gasoline scissors, as lead to rapid wear and tear. The problem is due to unscrupulous fuel producers who sell a completely different brand under the guise of 92. The situation is as follows:

  • In the passport on the gasoline equipment is a recommendation to use gasoline with an octane number not lower than 92;
  • The conscientious owner goes to the gas station where the price is lowest and puts it in his or her brushcutter with a clear conscience;
  • As a result, the service life is reduced, because AI-80 and AI-76 are often sold under the guise of AI-92.

Fueling

To avoid this situation, you need to choose a filling station, which sells proven gasoline (it can be determined by the reviews of regular customers). It is also important where to pour the fuel after purchase. only metal containers should be used for this (plastic. forbidden).

Preferably, when it is possible to buy gasoline for grass trimmer high purity specifically for garden equipment. Then you can be sure of its quality and protection from counterfeit.

Which oil to choose to fill your grass trimmer or types of lubricants

Grass trimmers and lawnmowers run on two-stroke engines, which have a simplified design. Rarely, but there are trimmer models with 4-stroke engines that run on pure gasoline. The engine oil compartment (oil sump) is divided into two strokes to minimize tool weight and cost. If the rotating parts of the engine are not lubricated, they will eventually fail quickly. To prevent this, the grass trimmer is not filled with pure gasoline, but with a mixture of oil. What oil to dilute with gasoline for grass trimmer?

To begin with, let’s remember or find out what types of oils by chemical composition are produced:

  • Mineral fluids. designed for low-power, air-cooled machinery. This is the cheapest type of engine lubricant
  • Semi-synthetics. they are used for machines that are air- and water-cooled
  • Synthetic. suitable for all types of engines with different types of cooling. They do not require frequent replacement, and this type of lubricant is several times more expensive than mineral and semi-synthetic

From the above it follows that for the grass trimmer is suitable for oil with any composition. mineral, synthetic and semi-synthetic. Oils with different chemical compositions differ in price, so when buying should be based on the recommendations of the manufacturer of the tool. The instructions indicate the recommendation information about what types of oils are better to use. If it’s a TC-W3 standard, then the composition of the substance is not so important. In this case you can dilute mineral, semi-synthetic and synthetic with gasoline.

This is interesting! The main thing when choosing an oil is not to get caught in a fake, since today you can very often find different types of lubricating compositions for two-stroke engines, which consist mainly of low-quality petroleum products.

Using a trimmer for the grass in the garden

In modern conditions, the purpose of the grass trimmer is to care for the lawn and the area as a whole. In contrast to the traditional unit for mowing the lawn, the grass trimmer has advantageous differences:

High mobility. This allows the use of the device in hard-to-reach and limited in size places.

Versatility. Depending on the type of vegetation, the working elements change, allowing you to cut grass of any height and hardness.

Simple design. With timely maintenance grass trimmer does not require regular adjustments, frequent repairs.

When choosing a trimmer for grass, analyze the operating conditions of the unit, which will help to make the right choice on the type and power of the engine.

What are the capabilities of a chainsaw??

If you have a cottage or a house in the countryside, you need a chainsaw. For gardening needs a home chain saw is quite enough. Its power is low, but it is enough to remove old tree branches, cut firewood and boards. Such a saw is not too heavy and not too big. If you need to cut trees on the plot or are planning construction work, it is better to buy a semi-professional chainsaw. It should not be run for more than 8 hours a day. A professional chainsaw has high power and can run for up to 16 hours straight. High-strength materials are used for these saws, and use requires certain skills. Professional chainsaws are used in industrial felling and other similar work.

All these types of saws differ in both power and weight. If you are not planning large, permanent jobs, it is better to limit yourself to a household chainsaw, which weighs much less and is therefore easier to handle. Professional saws, on the other hand, have a power up to 6 kW and therefore weigh more. The choice of such a chainsaw depends on the thickness and strength of the material to be sawn.

Lubricants

Stricter criteria for choosing an oil-based lubricant. In the best case. it is the mineral or semi-synthetic engine oil recommended by the manufacturer, designed to work in high-speed two-stroke engines with air cooling.

Mineral oils have the advantage of lower cost. Their more expensive semi-synthetic and synthetic counterparts benefit from improved performance and compliance with environmental standards.

  • retain performance over a wide range of operating temperatures;
  • do not form soot deposits;
  • which contain detergents, antioxidants, preservatives, and other additives useful for power train performance.

How to Mix (Dilute) Gasoline and 2T Engine Oil.

to summarize the above. Use for your brand equipment an oil designed by or recommended by the equipment manufacturer. For example, STIHL FS 55 brushcutter use STIHL HP engine oil (see the STIHL Manual for more information). Figure 1a) or STIHL HP SUPER, for the Husqvarna 128R brushcutter use Husqvarna HP oil (Figure 1b) or Husqvarna LS oil. For 2.do not use engine oils for 4-stroke engines. for example 10W30, SAE 30, etc.д.

Figure 1 a-Husqvarna oil (left), STIHL oil (right)

Useful tip

Never use 2-stroke oil intended for water-cooled engines, as these oils are designed to operate at lower temperatures.

It is necessary to follow the proportions of oil and gasoline for the fuel mixture specified by the manufacturers in the owner’s manual. Chinese manufacturers most often specify a proportion of 1 part oil to 25 parts gasoline, with STIHL and Husqvarna this proportion is 1 / 50.When preparing a small volume of mixture (up to 1 liter), it is very important to carefully measure the amount of oil in the mixture. Even small errors in the amount of oil can cause serious inconsistencies in the mixture. In these cases you can use a medicine syringe for accurate dosing.Preparing the fuel mixture must be made in a clean, specially designed for this purpose. (see. figure 2)

Useful tip

I do not recommend to use improvised plastic bottles and canisters, because gasoline can dissolve plastics and all this “slurry” gets into the fuel tank and disables the carburetor.

Plastic canisters designed for gasoline are always marked with a “flame” sign. It is very convenient to use a canister equipped with a spill-free fueling system (see. figure 3). The no-fill system has a valve that prevents fuel from spilling when the tank is full.

Figure 3. No spill system

What is the best oil to choose for boat motors.

Also note that if these oils cannot be used to make gasoline mixture for boat engines. In 2T model motors it is necessary to fill in a mix made of gasoline with at least 89 octane number and ultrapure oil with detergent additives of NMMATC-W3 marking in proportion of 1:50 for working mode, and. 1:25 for break-in period (first 5-10 hours). Selecting a quality oil.the basis of engine operation, so each manufacturer recommends pouring into the technique certain brands of oil, thereby guaranteeing the longest service life of the product. So for the boat engines (both 2t and 4t) tohatus service center recommends to use german motul or american quicksilver oils. For mercury boat motors, you should use only quicksilver motor oil. For Honda boat motors, the most preferred brands are motul and statoil.

Useful tip

It is not recommended to use the fuel mixture if more than two months have passed since it was prepared.

How to Dilute Gasoline with Grass Trimmer Oil for Fueling

The two-stroke engines of the tool work due to the petrol-oil mixture, which is prepared in the proportions specified in the technical passport of the device. If you ignore the rules of mixing, the garden tool can quickly fail.

The functioning of the two-stroke unit is different from the work of four-stroke motors: the lubrication of the rubbing surfaces in the crankshaft and other parts of the device is not from the crankcase, but through oil, which has been previously diluted with gasoline. There is a general rule for two-stroke engines. gasoline is diluted with a certain volume of oil intended for this purpose.

How to dilute gasoline with oil for grass trimmer. step-by-step instructions

Fuel composition is mixed in special proportions.

If the fuel mixture is diluted with an insufficient quantity of the lubricant, this will lead to a rapid wear and tear of the mower’s parts

The optimum oil to gasoline ratio can be found in the trimmer manual. as a rule, it is equal to 1:50, 1:40 or 1:25.

Dissolve gasoline with the lubricant component in a suitable container first: do not do it immediately in the fuel tank. If you ignore this rule, the engine may not run continuously, and the tool will quickly break down. To dilute the fuel mixture, do not use plastic canisters or bottles, because gasoline can dissolve this synthetic material. The order of mixing the fuel:

  • Pour a liter of gasoline into a container (optimally, a metal canister).
  • Add half of the necessary oil proportion.
  • Mix liquids thoroughly, away from open flame sources.
  • Pour the rest of the lubricant into the container and stir the mixture again.
  • Add oil in the trimmer’s fuel tank.

Work must be performed wearing a respirator and rubber gloves. You can use a watering can for easy pouring. The ready mixture should not be kept longer than 3 months, it is better to dilute exactly as much fuel as you need for the planned work in the nearest future. Always choose a quality oil to mix with gasoline, buy it at a reliable gas station.

Proportions of oils and fuel

To calculate the ratio of ingredients for the grass trimmer dressing you have to follow the recommendations on the oil package. The standard proportion is 1:50. Any two-stroke oil of good quality may be used.

Rules of mixing

Now about how to mix the components correctly. But it would be more logical to begin with analysis of widespread, but absolutely inadmissible mistakes, which “sin” many owners of this mowing unit. The following are considered mistakes in mixing fuel mixtures.

  • Adding oil to the fuel already in the brushcutter’s fuel tank. This is not a way to obtain a homogeneous fuel mixture. It might work, if only you shake the weed trimmer for a long time afterwards. But I don’t think that’s what you should do, considering the weight of the machine.
  • First pour oil into the mixing container, and then add gasoline to it. Gasoline has a lower density than oil, so if you add it to the oil, it will remain in the upper layer, that is, the natural mixing will not happen. Of course you can mix it afterwards, but it will take much more energy than if you do it the other way around. pouring oil on top of the gasoline.
  • Ignoring precise measuring tools to take the necessary volumes of ingredients used. In other words, it is a bad habit to dilute the amount of oil or gasoline “by eye” when operating your motorcycle.
  • Use empty drinking water bottles for the fuel mixture. Such containers are made of too thin polyethylene, which can be dissolved by gasoline.

Considering all of the above, we recommend using the following rules when mixing the fuel mixture for two-stroke grass trimmer engines.

  • Use only clean containers made of metal or special plastic for storing gasoline, oil, ready-to-use fuel mixture and its preparation.
  • Use a watering can to fill petrol into the dilution container to avoid spilling, and a measuring cup with volume markings or a 5 ml and 10 ml medical syringe to add oil.
  • First pour gasoline into the fuel mixture canister before pouring oil into the canister.
  • To dilute the mixture, pour only half of the planned volume of gasoline into the canister first.
  • Next add to the petrol all the oil required for the mixture.
  • Stir the content of the dilution container thoroughly. it is best to stir in a tightly closed container in a circular motion. Do not use any other object to stir the fuel inside the canister, because it is not known what material it is made of, what reaction it may have with the ingredients of the mixture, and how clean it is.
  • Add the rest of the gasoline to the stirred mixture and stir thoroughly again.
  • It is possible to fill the fuel tank of a lawn mower with a prepared mixture.

It should be borne in mind that the ready fuel mixture should not be stored for more than 14 days, as it loses its properties, stratifies and evaporates, which leads to changes in proportions, and thus deteriorates the work of the grass trimmer.

The consequences of an incorrect ratio

The working life of a brushcutter’s engine depends on how accurately you follow the manufacturer’s recommended oil to gasoline ratio. The fact is that the fuel mixture enters the cylinders in the form of gasoline-oil mist. And the task of the oil composition is to lubricate the moving and friction parts and surfaces of a variety of parts that are in the cylinder. If it suddenly turns out that there is not enough oil, and somewhere it will not be enough at all, the contacting dry parts will start to damage each other. This results in scoring, scratches and chips, which will certainly lead to complete or partial engine failure (for example, it may jam).

In the opposite case, when too much oil gets into an engine, it has no time to be completely burnt out, depositing on the cylinder walls and turning into solid particles over time. coke, slag and the like. As you can guess, this also leads to engine failure. The most important thing that can not be allowed. even a single violation of the proportions in the direction of the lack of oil. It’s better to overfill a little oil 10 times than to underfill just once. It often happens that this one time is just enough to break an engine.

Oil for brushcutters. how to choose and what proportions to dilute

Many of you have petrol-powered tools in your household, for example, in a private home you can’t do without a chainsaw. As you know, the preparation of firewood for the winter comes in handy at construction and repair work, and in general, it is a very necessary tool. If the country house also has a decent-sized plot, then the grass trimmer or lawnmower, which also run on gasoline, is simply needed to fight the grass.

Of course, you can buy them and electric, but not everyone likes to pull a 30-meter extension cord to mow the area overgrown with grass up to the knee. That’s why most people prefer to work with gasoline-powered tools. As you know, you need to add to the gasoline a special oil for two-stroke engines. And here we are going to talk about it, because it’s a very important aspect, if you don’t add oil and add it in wrong proportions, your engine will crack up very fast and you will have to go to a service center. To avoid all these troubles, you should add only quality oil in the right proportions.

The most popular for chainsaws, brush cutters and trimmers are products of the famous company STIHL. It is sold in two packages of 1 liter and 100 ml. A liter bottle is good for those who work a lot, but a small bottle is enough for “one cut”. The capacity of 1 liter costs 250, and for 10 ml it costs 60. If you take a big one, the savings are obvious.

You add oil to petrol in proportion of 1 to 50, so you get 100 ml for 5 liters of petrol. As you can see, a small bottle is perfect for getting 5 liters of gasoline mix for your chain saw or weed trimmer. The large bottle has special markings on the side, so you can see how much oil you have poured out. if you have bought a big one-liter bottle, you can buy a 20-ml syringe at a drugstore. Very handy. 1 syringe of oil for 1 liter of petrol.

Specialists advise to use brand oil for their equipment, it is ideal because it is designed and tested specifically on STIHL tools. Note that Stihl has its own brands, such as VIKING (popular models of gasoline trimmers). Use Stihl oil for these too and you won’t have any problems at all.

If you put more gasoline in the mixture than you can use, it is best to store the remainder in a metal canister or in a glass container. Do not store the mixture in a plastic bottle under any circumstances. Of course, if you use up the leftovers in a couple or three days, you can pour the rest of the mixture into a plastic canister, but if the mixture will be stored for a long time, then either a canister or a glass container. The thing is that the petrol mix corrodes the plastic bottle, there are microscopic sediments of plastic in the mix and it is very bad for the engine. Keep this in mind if you want your tool to work long and without problems.

The second most popular oil brand is notorious Hooksvarna. Of course, when you think about it that way, more people use STIHL chainsaws, at least all my friends and their friends use them in their work.

However, there are those who cherish Husqvarna tools and I understand them, because I personally do not see much difference between Husqvarna and Stil, and both tools are of very high quality. But I’ve seen some happy Husqvarna chain saw owners. they say their saws are great. I have not saw it myself, but I always listen to what people say. So if you have a Husqvarna chain saw it is better to use a special brand oil for it. Although nothing terrible will happen if you dilute the gasoline Stihl. But since the manufacturer recommends using only its products, then we do so.

You can find liter containers on sale. The bottle is black and has the same markings on the side as Stihl’s (to know how much oil has been poured out of the bottle). Seems to me absolutely identical quality. It costs 270, a little more.

Both are good quality oils, the price is about the same, and they are diluted 1:50. So feel free to buy any oil, of course, it is better to buy the oil of the brand you have the tool. then everything will be perfect, just like the manufacturer advises. Have a great time sawing, mowing the grass and let your power tool work for a long time without breakdowns.

Types of engine oils and their purpose

Choice of oil for the gasoline trimmer

Engine oil for gasoline trimmer for grass is a lubricant that serves to reduce wear and tear between the rubbing nodes of the engine.

The composition of oil includes residual hydrocarbons and various additives that improve the properties of the final product. To ensure the long and trouble-free operation of your lawnmower, experts recommend using oils, which by their physical and chemical properties correspond to this type of motor.

Today it is accepted to distinguish three main types of oils by the way they are produced:

  • Mineral, created in the process of distillation of hydrocarbons;
  • Synthetic oils obtained by processing natural gas or by synthesis;
  • Semi-synthetic, which includes an improved mineral oil with the addition of some synthetic components.

In order to prevent the mixing of different types, the manufacturer adds a dye to the oils, which shows the difference in the composition of the lubricant.

What gasoline to fill up

for the grass trimmer you should choose unleaded 92 or 95. As practice shows, gasoline AI-80 can lead to device failures, which is a questionable economy. Fuel must be fresh, that is, after purchase it can be stored for no more than 60 days.

Other factors also influence the fuel quality, e.g. the use of special lawnmower lubricant and diluting it in a separate container. It is also recommended to use special canisters designed for storing gasoline.

Two-stroke and four-stroke

The internal combustion engines used in trimmers come in two-stroke and four-stroke. By design, two-stroke engines are not complicated. But require a quality fuel mixture.

Gasoline for a grass trimmer with a two-stroke powerplant needs a precise dosage of lubricant. Ignoring the requirement leads to a sharp reduction in engine life. Problems with starting it up.

The four-stroke engine does not require the correct proportion of oil and gasoline. The formation of the right mixture. automatic. The components of the fuel mixture are stored in different containers. Fuel is expensive, but the costs are covered by the silent operation of the unit, the environmental purity of the exhaust gases.
