How to properly refuel a chainsaw to extend its service life?

The engine of a modern chainsaw is a single or two-cylinder carburetor engine. As a rule, two-stroke models are installed, although four-stroke models are also occasionally found. The rotational speed of the working shaft reaches 13.5 thousand revolutions, which puts forward stringent requirements for the quality and composition of the fuel mixture.

Manufacturers inform users in sufficient detail how to refuel a chainsaw, but for many this question remains not entirely clear. Let’s take a closer look.

How to mix the fuel mixture correctly?

The mixing process is quite simple. you need to measure out a certain amount of oil and pour it into the corresponding volume of gasoline. It is necessary to prepare a clean container for mixing. Usually, plastic canisters are used, which are quite suitable for this purpose. However, some species have a serious drawback. they accumulate static electricity, which can lead to the formation of a spark and ignite the fuel mixture.

The best option is to use a special canister with two necks, which are filled with gasoline and oil, but they are quite expensive. For accurate dosage of oil, many use medical syringes with applied divisions. The more carefully the amount of the mixture is measured, the longer the service life and the higher the quality of the tool.

Gasoline to oil ratio

The standard ratio of oil to gasoline, which is relevant for most chainsaws, is 1 to 50. This means that 20 ml of oil must be added to 1 liter of gasoline. However, each manufacturer has its own requirements for the composition of the fuel mixture, which are due to the design of the engine, the features of its parameters and other factors. It is impossible to determine on your own what proportions are best suited for a given instrument.

Complete and accurate information can only be obtained from the user manual. If it does not contain any indication of the composition of the fuel mixture, then you should adhere to common practice and make it in a ratio of 1: 50. There are other options, from 1: 20 to 1: 50.

Storage conditions for the finished mixture

Most users usually prepare the fuel mixture for future use. This is explained by the saving of time. it is believed that it is more correct to mix a large volume once, and then simply pour fuel into the tool tank. This point of view is valid, but with important limitations. The finished mixture should not be stored for too long, as irreversible changes occur in it.

Ideally, it should only be prepared for one day, but this is considered by many to be too irrational a decision. The permissible shelf life depends on the ratio and grade of the components. Most experts recommend NOT storing the mixture for more than 3 months. It is recommended to use metal canisters and keep the mixture under a canopy, away from direct sunlight.
