STIHL RMA 443 TC cordless lawn mower

Lawn mowing season is well and truly here and this year, for reasons we’re all too familiar with, most of us are spending a lot more time in the company of the green stuff than would normally be the case. Having a reliable, quiet, and efficient mower is one of those things that makes the less glamorous aspects of being a garden owner less of a chore, and STIHL’s range of cordless electric machines delivers on all counts. I’ve been putting the RMA 443 TC through its paces.

The RMA 443 T-C was gifted to me by STIHL in exchange for an unbiased review.

The benefits of cordless battery power in the garden have been clear to me for some time (I first wrote about STIHL’s implementation of it within two of their cordless hedgetrimmers here), so I’ve been particularly interested to see how this would translate to a mower platform. I’ve long eschewed electric garden tools with their cables and opted for petrol power instead, but any gains made in terms of mobility had to be weighed against increased noise, vibration and emissions (while clearly the electricity used to charge STIHL’s batteries will have an emission footprint somewhere along the line, we do at least have the option to choose a renewable energy provider, something not possible with a tank full of oil and gas). But I remained to be convinced that battery power was at the stage where it would have enough oomph to power a self-propelled mower while retaining sufficient juice to keep the blades turning, without having to continually recharge the cells or swap power packs. If STIHL could provide a cordless mower that would take the place of my petrol model, I was going to be impressed.

First impressions

Unboxing reveals a neat little unit in orange and white STIHL livery. (I’m quite pleased about this as, though it’s of very little importance, I’m was never mad keen on the bright green used by VIKING – the Austrian-based mower arm of the company that has now visually been entirely aligned with the STIHL brand.) Four wheels (no rear roller on this model, so no stripes, but that’s fine for me), a hard plastic grass box which will make an interesting change and, where the petrol tank should be, something that looks like a hi-tech motorcycle helmet and visor. Lifting the smoked plastic flap up, I see it’s where the battery goes. The most visually arresting thing about this machine is that the handle only seems to attach on one side – how on earth is that going to work, I wonder? It looks cool, but won’t it be hard to manoevre, put undue stress on the side where it connects? We’ll see.

Power

In the battery compartment, the lower of two slots receives one of STIHL’s AP System batteries, of which there are currently four. Push the battery in till it engages, insert the ‘key’ – which looks like a larger version of the kind of two-blade fuse you find in your car’s fusebox – and you’re good to go.

The upper, passive slot can be used to carry a second battery so that you can swap over mid mow without having to return to wherever you’ve left your battery charger – whether or not you’ll need this depends both upon the size of your lawn, the capacity of the battery you’ve chosen, and how much you’re using the self-propelled motor. On the biggest lawns I’ve cut I found one battery in the mower and one in the AL 500 Hi-speed charger worked well, as this gets an AP 300 battery from flat to full charge in just 20 minutes, which is about the length of time it took to drain an AP 200 on full power with long, damp grass and the drive engaged for a steeply sloping lawn.

There’s an ECO mode which can be engaged with a switch within the battery compartment. Turning this on will prolong the battery life slightly, at the expense of a little power and torque – rather like the automatic gearbox on a car, it’s an adaptive control and works well on a regularly mown lawn, but I will probably continue to favour full power for the first cut of the year or anything particularly long.

There are at present four batteries in the AP System, and three chargers – and all can be used interchangeably with the AP System tools for large gardens and professional applications (though the cordless chainsaws such as the MSA 220 C-B really benefit from the extra power of the AP 300 S battery). Full details are here.

Special features

Mono-comfort handle I’ve already mentioned this as one of the stand-out features when looking at the mower, and I’ll admit I was decidedly skeptical about it. In use, you wouldn’t know you weren’t using a regular handle with two sides – STIHL must have exerted their engineering expertise considerably to guarantee such a smooth implementation of a unique design. It has two settings to suit operators of different heights, both the height and the collapsing of the handles are controlled by the same chunky, slightly recessed lever.

Hard shell grass box Inevitably this takes up a little more room when storing and transporting the mower, but I found it quite refreshing not to be flapping around with a grass box like a concertina. There’s a moulded handle on both the top lid and the bottom of the box, and an interesting little flap towards the back (nearest the operator) of the lid, the purpose of which I had yet to discover.

Height adjuster You can’t help feeling STIHL are just showing off with the cut height adjuster. It’s the smoothest implementation you could imagine – at the back of the deck there’s a transverse handle which runs left to right, and changing the height is simply a matter of grasping this and gently either pushing down or pulling up (you fingers naturally trigger the large, hidden release button as you grasp the handle). Height level indices are moulded into the polymer deck, a small notch on the metal chassis indicating the current cut height from numbers one (25mm) to 6 (75mm). Interestingly, a talk I attended at STIHL/VIKING HQ in Austria just before Christmas revealed that the even lower S (for Service) setting is there just for us Brits – the Europeans find it highly amusing that we crop our lawns so closely.

Carrying handle A lovely, chunky carrying handle moulded into the front of the deck makes this mower a dream to lift into the shed, the garage, or the car, one hand on this, one hand on the rear handle mentioned above.

Optional mulching kit AMK 043 For those who don’t want to be dealing with piles of grass cuttings, the optional mulching kit will do away with the need for the grass catching box and return mulched clippings straight into the lawn.

In use

The handles make the mower a dream to move in and out of storage, and being an electric mower you can fold the handle down and store it upright without having to worry about flooding the carburettor or getting air bubbles in the fuel feed. Assuming, of course, the battery’s disconnected and the key’s been removed, but that becomes as automatic as pulling the HT lead off a petrol mowers spark plug before working on it or transporting it.

With all four wheels on the ground, the handle folds back smoothly and you’ll hear a satisfying click as the release lever clicks into place. Flip the battery compartment lid up and push a battery into the lower slot till it engages, then put the safety key in and close the lid. At the back of the machine, lift the flap to the rear chute – and it’s at this point that you’ll notice quite why STIHL have spent so much time working on what might at first appear quite a gimmicky handle, because the absence of the second arm means access to the rear of the machine is so much easier. You’ll notice a large grass chute which I have yet to manage to get clogged even with damp grass – the collector box lifts in easily at this point and, once you’ve set the cut height, you’re good to go.

Here is one minor niggle I have. The cut height adjuster is, as mentioned, gloriously well designed, and smooth as you could hope for. Is it terrible of me to be wishing for the reassurance of something a little more clunky, the positive action of an old fashioned ratcheted system with a big lever? And the moulded height numbers on the deck really need to be emphasised more, they’re quite hard to see. Clearly, I’m getting old, and this is a beautiful, seamless action – I’d just prefer it this part of my interaction with the machine to offer some more positive feedback. A clunk, a click, and a dirty great number I don’t have to peer at.

Starting the machine involves holding down the big orange button on the top of the mono-comfort handle, and pushing the back lever bar towards the bar. This is your basic dead man’s handle, the motor will fire up and the blades start turning, and you can let go of the orange start button. Releasing this handle will stop the motor. The single-speed drive to the rear wheels is activated by the lever on the front of the bar, pull this towards you to engage the self-propelling function. It’s worth noting that the mower is reasonably light even with a full grass box, and since the drive does drain the battery faster, I’ve often found myself simply pushing the mower. It’s nice to have though when you have slopes or a lot of lawn to cut.

Nitpicking once more, with so much evident thought into the design of almost every part of this very slick and lovely machine, both motorstop and self-propulsion levers feel a little spindly. I think all that might be needed is a vinyl sleeve along each to make the feel of using these match the operator’s experience of the rest of the mower. It’s a really fussy point to make, but STIHL have spoilt us in every other area with this machine, and so here we are.

The grass collector is a little box of delightful tricks. As soon as the blades are engaged, you’ll notice that the air flow through the machine causes the mysterious little flap on the top of the collector to rise up. As the collector fills with grass, this gradually lowers until, when completely flush with the lid, you know it’s time to empty the box. So much better than waiting till the mower starts spitting mashed up cuttings from under the deck. Another well thought-out touch is the clamshell action on the box, having lifted the collector out of the machine by the top handle, with your other hand on the bottom handle you can flip the lid and empty the whole box out via the top in one fluid motion, rather than having to shake everything out through the front aperture.

Overall

Already a convert to STIHL’s AP battery system in several other pieces of everyday gardening kit (the ‘killer app’ being the super fast AL 500 Hi-speed charger), the test here for me was how well the cordless system would transfer to a lawn mower that would do more than just pootle daintily around a very small garden. In use, it’s handled slopes, long grass, windfall apples and damp conditions, and been a pleasure to use. The mower itself is an ergonomic delight – beautifully engineered and finished, notwithstanding the two very minor gripes mentioned in my review – and any initial skepticism regarding that unique mono-comfort handle has been shown to entirely unjustified.

For anyone with a medium to large lawn looking to replace either an electric mower or, more likely a self-propelled petrol machine, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend STIHL’s RMA 443 TC.

Verdict

For those of us with smaller gardens, it often feels as though we have to overpay for a high-quality lawn mower, or sacrifice cutting power and quality to get a cheaper budget model. The STIHL RMA 235 comfortably straddles both boundaries: it’s a lightweight and compact lawnmower designed for smaller lawns (up to 300m2, but 200m2 and smaller is good, too), with the power and performance of some of STIHL’s larger machines. Well priced and easy to use, it’s the perfect lawn mower for the smaller lawn.

STIHL RMA 235 Design and Features – Tough and easy to store

It’s easy to spot a STIHL product thanks to the distinctive orange and white design, and the STIHL RMA 235 is no different. As well as having the standard colour scheme, this lawn mower also has STIHL’s usual high build quality with a tough-feeling and robust body. It’s also comparatively light at 14kg.

STIHL’s more expensive lawn mowers have a single arm that folds easily down for storage. The STIHL RMA 235, as a cheaper model, has a more traditional design, with a handle that has to be attached on both sides. Even so, STIHL has put a lot of thought into storage.

Each of the tool-free bolts that holds the arms in place is double-threaded. When you unscrew the bolts, you only undo the nut as far as the first thread, then you can fold the handlebar down and forward. If there was a single thread, then the nut would come off the end, making the job fiddlier. Even so, as the control cable runs up the side of the handlebars, you just need to be careful that you don’t get it caught in the fold.

Once folded, the lawn mower can have the grass-catcher box removed and placed on top. It should mean that the RMA 235 can be placed into a smallish shed, and the carry handle on top makes moving it around easier. There are two height positions for the handlebars, which will suit most people.

As this is a cordless model, it runs on STIHL’s AK batteries, which also power many of the company’s other tools including the FSA-56 grass trimmer and MSA 120C chainsaw. You can either buy the lawn mower barebones, if you have a battery already, but there are several bundles available, such as with the AK 20 and AL101 charger.

stihl, rechargeable, lawn, mower

STIHL says that the AL101 takes 150 minutes to charge the battery, although you get 80% charge after 105 minutes. Faster chargers, larger batteries and spare batteries are all available, so you can balance run time and charge time to suit your garden. As a general rule, STIHL recommends the AK 20 battery for gardens of up to 200m2 and the AK 30 for up to 300m2.

Batteries have a charge meter on them: just press the button and a set of LEDs light up to show you how much charge is left. Neatly, when the battery is inserted and the lawn mower’s lid is closed, you can easily see the battery meter.

STIHL, as always, is very safety conscious, so there are several steps you have to go through before you can use the lawn mower. First, you have to have the key inserted, which is kind of like a larger version of a car fuse. If you have inquisitive children around, you can remove the key when the lawn mower is not in use.

Secondly, to start the lawn mower you have to depress the side button and then pull up the main trigger; after that, you can release the side button.

The RMA 235 has a 33cm cutting width, which is ideal for smaller gardens. Underneath, there’s a single blade. It’s easy to remove for sharpening (make sure you take the battery out first), although you’re probably better off getting your STIHL dealer to take care of this for you. There’s no mulching option for this lawn mower, and you can only collect the grass cuttings in the box at the back.

Adjustable cutting heights are important on any lawn mower, both to help you tackle different lengths of grass, and to adjust cutting heights for different times of year. There are five marked cutting heights on the lawn mower (25mm to 65mm, so roughly 8mm per step). You have to pull out the lever and move it around to adjust the height of the lawnmower’s frame. It’s a touch fiddly to get right to get past the weight of the lawnmower.

STIHL RMA 235 Performance – Cuts beautifully and stuffs the grass catcher full

I tested the RMA 235 on a variety of grass lengths, from older, more sparse grass, to a recently sown lawn, and a slightly overgrown border. Given the length of the grass in some places, I had to start with a higher cutting height (step 4 on the lawn mower). At this level, the RMA 235 easily cut through the grass, leaving no taller clumps behind.

Over the next couple of weeks, I reduced the cutting height down to the lowest setting of 25mm to get the perfect summer cut (for autumn, a longer cut is required). This slow process meant that I got the ideal cutting height, while maintaining the grass quality, leaving a neatly trimmed lawn with that soft and bouncy feel to it.

With regular (twice weekly) mowing, plus watering and feeding, my grass was left in far better state that it’s been in a while: the quality of the lawn mower is hugely important in maintaining a lawn.

At the back of the grass catcher box is a pop-up flap: when it’s up, there’s room in the box; down means that the box is full. The power of the RMA 235 is such that the 30-litre box takes a lot of grass, neatly compacted. In fact, remove the box from the rear and the grass stands up neatly. Regardless of the size of your lawn, the way that grass is compacted means that you’ll need to empty the RMA 235 less than much of the competition.

Should I buy the STIHL RMA 235?

While at the bottom of STIHL’s range, the RMA 235 is far from what you might call cheap; however, you’re paying for quality. The simple fact is that if you want the best quality lawn, the quality of the cut is hugely important.

For those keen gardeners that take pride in a well-manicured lawn but perhaps don’t have much grass, say in a city garden, the STIHL RMA 235 is the perfect compact cordless lawn mower. Effortlessly dealing with all grass cuts, extremely well built and light enough to manoeuvre easily, this is the best compact lawn mower you can buy, hands down, but you can find bigger lawn mowers on my guide to the top lawn mowers.

T3 knows a thing or two about the best cordless lawn mowers, which is why I was keen to take a look at the all new STIHL RMA 443 VC. STIHL is one of the very best names in the lawn mower business today, and its more heavy duty AP System Lawn Mowers deliver a great range for those who need serious sward cutting potential.

The STIHL RMA 443 VC review here is designed to show what one of this range’s more affordable models delivers, which retailing right now for roughly half a grand, presents a more realistic price point for many people who aren’t gardening professionals themselves and can therefor justify super-high-end turf masters.

We start this STIHL RMA 443 VC review, though, with a short video showing me actually using this cordless lawn mower. This should hopefully give you a good idea as to what it looks like and how easy it is to maneuver.

STIHL RMA 443 VC review: design and build quality

Take the STIHL RMA 443 VC out of its box and you’re immediately hit by the characteristic STIHL colorway, as well as how sturdy and robust its housing and frame is. Lifting the 443 VC is made a bit easier, though, by two grab handles being built into bodywork, one at the front and one behind the battery housing.

What also makes maneuvering (and storing) the STIHL RMA 443 VC is the fact that its handlebar assembly is foldable, with a metal catch locking it in place or unlocking it for collapse.

The handlebar assembly is where the action takes place in terms of the majority of the lawn mower‘s control, with a single cable running up the handle bar strut. Controls on the handle consist of a vario drive speed lever, which is for dictating how fast the mower will self-propel, as well as a power button and brace of frame levers which when pushed or pulled into the central handle initiate cutting and propulsion.

A dominant part of the STIHL RMA 443 VC’s design, which is impossible to miss, is its elevated battery port and storage assembly, which sits directly on top of the mower’s blade housing. Open this up and you are presented with the mower‘s battery port (you just slide a battery in) and a spare battery storage bay (so you can quickly swap batteries and continue mowing).

This assembly also houses the mower’s Eco mode switch, which when activated ensures the speed of the lawn mower motor is automatically adapted to the actually required power, thereby saving energy and improving runtime, as well as the mower’s activation key. Remove the activation key and the mower won’t work, which is good for keeping children safe.

In terms of the mower’s blade system, it comes with flow-optimised blades, which are designed to trim grass with minimal resistance, which means swirling air within the housing as much as necessary. This again is designed to save energy and elongate battery life.

The STIHL RMA 443 VC’s grass box connects by lifting a rear plastic flap and inserting it into a sculpted cavity. The box locks firms in place and I noticed no lateral movement during use.

The STIHL RMA 443 VC’s wheels are made from dense, hard-wearing plastic and feature a traction pattern that is designed to aid directional stability – thereby making it easier to hold a course and mow in a straight line.

Finally, in terms of design the STIHL RMA 443 VC has six different cutting heights, ranging from 6 though to 1 (6 being the tallest and 1 being the shortest), and these are selected by pressing a button on the underside of the rear grab handle and lifting and sliding the connected mechanism. This lowers or lifts the mower’s position to the ground.

STIHL RMA 443 VC review: performance and features

One of the biggest concerns for buyers when considering if to buy a cordless lawn mower is just how long it will run on its battery. After all, the last thing you want to do is be faced with am unwanted wait to finish a mow due to lack of battery power. Ideally, most users won’t want to buy multiple batteries either, which is an added expense.

The STIHL AP 200 battery supplied with the STIHL RMA 443 VC, though, is not only quick to charge but delivered enough power for me to mow my sizeable rear garden, and small front garden, and still have power to spare. The AP 200 displays its power with 4 LED lights on its front, and after starting with a full 4 by the time I had finished I was on 1.

As I mentioned above, though, if you’re buying this mower because you have multiple large gardens that need mowing, then you should absolutely purchase a second AP 200 battery, as the STIHL RMA 443 VC has a dedicated storage compartment in it for storage. This means that even if you did expend all the energy in your primary battery you can, within seconds, swap the batteries and continue mowing.

My experience with the vario drive system on the STIHL RMA 443 VC was great, too, which was good as this mower is not something you’d want to push round manually for extended periods due to its weight. The drive motor is engaged by pulling a frame lever toward you on the grab handle, and its speed is dictated by a vertical level on the handle that shows a small picture of a tortoise and a hare.

Naturally, position the lever towards the tortoise and the mower will be propelled at a slow rate, while if you position it toward the hare then it moves forwards automatically much quicker. There are multiple speed levels selectable, so depending on the user/scenario a comfortable propulsion can always be selected.

STIHL RMA 510 V Battery Powered Lawn Mower Review

I found myself with the propulsion system set roughly in the middle and engaging it on straights while releasing the actuation level when turning the mower.

So, while propulsion is handled by pulling a frame lever toward the main grab handle, cutting is actuated by pushing another frame lever towards it (see image below). This system works well as you can select either one on its own, or easily hold both together. For example, you may just want to cut manually without the propulsion system engaged, or you may want to simply move the mower without cutting but with greater ease and less effort.

I found the cutting power of the STIHL RMA 443 VC very strong and more than enough, even when cutting at a super low level 1 cutting height, to make short work of my unruly sward. Even cutting on Eco mode, the mower never got stuck or jammed, and simply glided over the lawns. I also found the sound level emitted (maximum 91 dB) to be comfortable and I didn’t feel I needed ear protectors.

I feel that unless you have a gigantic garden with many different gradients and surface types, then the STIHL RMA 443 VC will have ample cutting power. The results of its actions can be seen in the images and videos in this review.

stihl, rechargeable, lawn, mower

Penultimately, let’s talk briefly about the STIHL RMA 443 VC battery dock. This isn’t included in the box and needs to be purchased separately, which is not ideal if you don’t already own a charging dock, but not such a big deal if you already do. It is something to consider, though, when making a RMA 443 VC purchase, though, as it is extra expenditure.

As can be seen in the image below, this dock houses a single AP 200 battery at one time and connects to the mains with a standard kettle plug. Plug the battery in and its LED lights will flash and then fill as the battery is refilled with power.

Lastly, to engage either the cutting blade frame handle or that for the propulsion system, you have to simultaneously press a button on the side of the grab handle. This again is one extra safety mechanism that I really rated, as it means that no child can walk up to the mower and just grab one of the levers and start moving and/or cutting.

Overall, in terms of performance I had no complaints at all from the STIHL RMA 443 VC and it felt natural and intuitive to use.

STIHL RMA 443 VC review: verdict

So, there you have it – my STIHL RMA 443 VC review. I hope it has explained how I got on with this cordless mower and why I rate it highly.

It’s a really well thought out and designed cordless mower that will be ideal in my mind for anyone with medium to large gardens, as it has the battery life, robust design, and cutting power to handle them.

I can easily say, though, that this will be too much mower for people with small gardens – it’s simply OTT for those sorts of needs.

If you can afford it, though, then it offers great, wire-free lawn mowing and STIHL has one of the best names in the business for reliability, too, so I’m very confident it will go the distance.

You don’t get quite the freedom that one of the best petrol lawn mowers gives you in terms of run time, and despite its self propulsion it isn’t as effortless as running one of the best robot lawn mowers, but for serious assisted manual sward slaying it’s one of the absolute best cordless mowers on the market today and easy to recommend.

STIHL MS 661 Magnum® Chainsaw 25 Benefits Description Specficiation Superior Power, Performance, and Rugged Dependability Great for Felling, de-limbing, and bucking large-diameter trees Proven Non-Electronic, low-maintenance Design Fuel-efficient engine Anti-Vibration management system reduces fatigue and improves handling To fell, de-limb, and buck large-diameter trees, you need a chainsaw with the dependable power and tough dependability of the MS 661 MAGNUM® professional chainsaw. This chainsaw has a straightforward, tried-and-true, non-electrical design. Low operating expenses are made possible by a fuel-efficient engine and easy-to-maintain air filtration system, and when compared to the MS 660, the STIHL anti-vibration management system improves handling and lessens operator fatigue. For specialists in forestry, municipal work, and tree service, the MS 661 MAGNUM® chainsaw is the ideal ally. STIHL ElastoStart™ The ElastoStart™ starter handle is an exclusive feature of STIHL. It is a starting grip with a built-in shock absorber that helps reduce the effort when pulling on the starter cord. The ElastoStart™ starter grip noticeably reduces the sudden peak forces (compression) normally felt during cranking. The forces which occur at the grip after the first compression stroke are smoothed out. Fuel and oil caps with retainers The fuel and oil cap retainers keep the caps attached to the unit for added convenience. Side-Access Chain Tensioner The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw. HD2 Air Filter The HD2 air filter on this unit is washable, providing extremely long filter life and lowering maintenance costs. The large surface area allows for longer run times between cleanings and high performance even while operating in dusty and dry conditions. Overall, the HD2 air filter provides better protection of the engine compared to standard air filters. Decompression Valve The decompression valve, also referred to as ‘deco’ or ‘deco valve’, vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting. The decompression valve temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking and helps reduce the effort needed to pull the starter rope. It is opened manually and closes automatically as soon as the engine fires. Anti-Vibration System STIHL has developed a system for minimizing the vibration levels of handheld outdoor power equipment. The STIHL anti-vibration system helps reduce operator fatigue and provides a more comfortable working experience. Adjustable Automatic Oiler The Adjustable Automatic Oiler allows the user to adjust the lubricant of the guide bar and saw chain for different bar lengths and cutting conditions.
