Storage of cutting discs for angle grinder

Main classification

With an angle grinder, you can successfully process a wide variety of surfaces, from wood to concrete and metal.

For each type of surface when working with an angle grinder, certain types of discs are used, which have fundamental differences between themselves.

It should also be noted that discs, which are designed for processing metal surfaces, in turn, also differ not only in thickness, but also in some characteristics.

storage, cutting, discs, angle

In general, a certain classification has been established for cutting wheels for metal, knowing which you can choose the right product that is necessary for work.

When choosing a disc for metal, it should be remembered that in this case, you only need to pay attention to abrasive products, since wheels with a diamond coating in this case are not suitable.

When making a purchase, you should not make the cost of the product as a determining factor. It is recommended to pay attention to some parameters, as well as to the performance properties of the disc.

On the surface of any material, a special marking is applied, which allows you to find out everything about its operating parameters, field of application and the manufacturer.

So, on the abrasive wheel, which is designed to work with metal, there will be a corresponding inscription.

You can find out the specific material from which the disc is made by the corresponding letter, for example, letter A will indicate corundum, AS symbols, electrocorundum, and so on.

Immediately after the material of manufacture are digital symbols indicating the abrasive fraction. In this case, the parameters can range from twenty four to one hundred and twenty.

This indicator affects the thickness of the cut of the material, and the higher it is, the thinner the grains.

Also, according to the corresponding marking, you can judge the softness of the wheel and the recommended rotation speed of the angle grinder itself, on which this disc will be installed.

If you have to work with a steel surface, then it is recommended to opt for corundum wheels, the abrasive fraction of which is in the middle range.

It should also be noted that to work on aluminum, the disc must be as hard as possible and have a sufficiently coarse abrasive.

Some features

It often happens that the metal must not only be cut off, but also sanded. In this case, select a special grinding-polishing type cut-off wheel for the angle grinder.

In some special cases, a wheel with replaceable sandpaper and other types of coatings can be installed on an angle grinder. Their diameter can vary from 125 and above.

At home, for these purposes, it is best to use a circle of 125 millimeters.

If you need to perform an angle grinder, grinding or polishing a metal surface, you will need to additionally purchase a special fine abrasive paste or an appropriate liquid composition.

Such a disc, with strict adherence to the technological process, will make it possible to completely eliminate the metal surface from various roughness and irregularities.

Such circles are classified primarily by the type of surface, as well as by the outer diameter, starting from 125 millimeters.

They can be used to work not only with steel, but also with aluminum.

There are special wheels for an angle grinder designed for sharpening a wide variety of metal tools.

In this case, three separate types can be distinguished, namely cutters, abrasive sharpening, and also with diamond spraying.

The roller cutter disc is used mainly for roughing metal and aluminum surfaces.

In turn, the abrasive wheel allows rough processing of a metal surface, for example, cleaning a welded joint and sharpening a variety of cutting tools.

Discs for angle grinder with diamond dusting of the roughing type allow you to work on the periphery of the metal surface.

When choosing this type of wheels for an angle grinder, you should pay attention to parameters such as thickness, outer diameter, as well as the type of surface.

For homework, a 125 mm circle of medium thickness is best suited. Wheels of this type can also be used when working on aluminum.

Dimensional indicators

An important role is played by various geometric parameters of the cutting material for metal, since not only the quality of the work performed, but also the ability to perform a variety of surface treatments, from grinding to cutting off, depends on this.

In order to choose the right abrasive material, it is necessary to know exactly not only the operating parameters of the angle grinder, but also its geometric dimensions.

You should also find out exactly the diameter of the protective casing on the tool, which will play a decisive role.

In most cases, the tool used by home craftsmen has a diameter of two hundred and fifty millimeters, but a tool with a diameter of three hundred and fifty millimeters is quite common.

In this case, the classification of a disc for an angle grinder is quite simple, and in order to correctly determine the choice of a cutting tool, you just need to know exactly the dimensions of your mini-unit.

It should also be noted that the larger the material for cutting metal in diameter, the longer it can be used. For a grinding wheel, the operating time is influenced by the thickness of the disc.

When choosing a cutting material for your tool, you should pay attention to the outer dimensions, in particular the diameter.

So, most often in everyday life, circles with an outer diameter of 125 millimeters are used. A circle of 125 millimeters, despite its small size, allows you to do a lot of work at home.

Of course, it is not economically profitable to use diameter 125 for construction work, but for a house it is the most optimal.

In addition to a diameter of 125, circles with larger indicators can also be purchased. The maximum available disc diameter for an angle grinder is five hundred millimeters, but it is impractical to use it at home.

You should also pay attention to the thickness of the cutting disc. In the event that it is necessary to make the most accurate cut with a minimum width, a thin disc should be used and vice versa.

It is necessary to process a thick metal surface with a disc with the maximum thickness.

The rotational speed of the tool also affects the discs. When working with thin disks, it is recommended to select the minimum.

Choice of Cut-off Wheels for Metal Angle Grinder

[Cutting disc for angle grinder for metal] is something that every home craftsman must have in his household.

This can be explained by the fact that the angle grinder is exactly that universal device that helps to successfully solve many problems around the house.

Despite its rather compact size, this tool allows you to quickly process various types of metals, as well as concrete.

In addition, using an angle grinder, you can cut wood, plastic, and many other materials.

The tool is very often used for grinding a wide variety of surfaces and performing a variety of other construction work.

In order to use an angle grinder for its intended purpose, immediately before starting work, it is necessary to install a cutting or grinding disc on it, which will act as a cutting tool.

Most often, this versatile tool is used for metal work, in which case you should only use discs that are specifically designed for this material.

In order to choose the right metal cutting disc for an angle grinder, you need to imagine the very nature of the work to be done.

Tips & Tricks

When choosing this cutting tool for an angle grinder, you should not make its cost a determining factor.

A poor-quality cutting tool for an angle grinder will quickly wear off, and in addition, when performing the appropriate work, it may completely collapse.

The recommended size of this tool for the home is 125 mm of medium thickness, which can also be used for work on aluminum.

It is better to take products from well-known manufacturers, the quality of which is beyond doubt.

When working with an angle grinder, do not forget about safety rules.

In general, an angle grinder is considered a rather dangerous tool that, if used incorrectly, can cause serious injury. Always wear protective goggles and gloves when working with this tool.

In addition, you should also monitor the number of revolutions of the tool used, since this parameter affects not only the quality of work, but also the safety of its performance.

Abrasive disc device

The abrasive disc is so called due to the fact that between several layers of the reinforcing mesh in the disc plate there is an abrasive in a bound state. Corundum, aluminum carbide, etc. can serve as such. Such a multilayer structure ensures the greatest operational safety, preventing the disc from splitting with the formation of brittle injuring fragments.

Basic notation

A thorough approach to the selection of abrasive wheels depends on the following criteria:

  • The overall diameter of the circle;
  • Disc plate thickness;
  • Landing diameter (rarely differs from 22.2).

In addition, the basic information usually indicates the expiration date.

According to the standards, the thickness of the plate with a diameter of 125 mm ranges from 2.3 mm to 2.5 mm. Thin discs with the same diameter are considered to be 1-1.2 mm.

The basic information should be looked for on the front surface: there the specialization of the circle will be indicated. whether it is intended for cutting only steel or is also suitable for non-ferrous metals. There are also universal options. It also indicates the size of the cutting disc, the shelf life and the maximum number of revolutions allowed during use.

Description and characteristics of cutting discs for angle grinder for metal

Cut-off wheels for metal work, or abrasive discs, are installed on the sawing power tool and are used for working with alloy steel, ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Most often, an angle grinder is equipped with cutting wheels of abrasive discs. This useful tool is also known as an angle grinder, but, as a rule, it is used for the purpose of sawing metal: pipes, corners, sheet products.

  • Specification parameters

    A specification is a code of four characters, with the help of which information about the fraction of abrasive grain and its binding substances is encrypted. For example, AS is a highly refined white fused alumina designed for cutting stainless steel workpieces. The code numbers indicate the grain size per unit of disc surface: for steel, you will need a coarse cut-off wheel marked 30 or 24.

    For non-ferrous metals, you will need a circle with a code of 40, or even 60 if the metal is soft. Further, the letter of the Latin alphabet denotes the hardness of the binder. The closer the letter is to the end, the harder the bond. However, there is an inverse relationship with the hardness of the material being processed, since it is not the bond that cuts, but the abrasive grain.

    The last two symbols rarely change and denote a binder, which is a viscous thermosetting plastic bakelite.

    Shelf life

    Usually, little importance is attached to these numbers, embossed around the insert bore. However, cut-off wheel manufacturers insist on using the products within the time period they specify: for example, V 01/2018 would mean the expiration date before the beginning of the first quarter of 2018.

    External diameter

    This most important parameter, in fact, means the class of the angle grinder, for which the cut-off wheel is designed to work. The following options are common: 115, 125, 150, 180 or 230 mm. It is unacceptable to install a wheel with a larger diameter than it should be on the grinder. This is expressly prohibited by safety precautions coupled with common sense. Firstly, the protective cover will interfere, and secondly, the speed of rotation of the cutting edge will go far beyond the limits provided by the manufacturer of the power tool, which with a high probability is fraught with serious injury and equipment failure.

    Plate thickness

    The thinner the cutting disc, the easier it is to cut through the material: the smaller blade area reduces its resistance. In general, thin plates have many advantages:

    • Get the job done faster;
    • Heat less;
    • The saw cut turns out smoother.

    At the same time, the disadvantage of this kind of circles is no less obvious: quick grindability. However, for an angle grinder of low power, cordless, not intended for long-term operation without interruption, this type of disc is perfect.

    It is worth noting that, subject to the safety standards and operational requirements for the power tool, neither thin nor thick discs are too dangerous: the reinforcing mesh retains the structure of the plate, regardless of its thickness.

    Grinding and grinding wheels

    Brushes are used to remove a layer of old coating, such as paint or varnish. You can also remove the layer damaged by corrosion with their help. These attachments are in the form of a disc or bowl, fitted with a wire cover.

    The efficiency of processing is determined by the shape of the wire. twisted or loose. For coarse processing of the layer, a wire of greater thickness is used.

    You can sharpen the tool using an angle grinder and a special grinding wheel.

    Heating nut

    The nut can be heated with a gas torch, hot air gun or blowtorch. The heated flange can usually be unscrewed with a standard wrench for an angle grinder.

    Classification by type of work

    Types of metal processing angle grinder:
    • removing the old paint layer, including from metal surfaces;
    • removal of rust, scale, dirt;
    • cutting;
    • processing of welded seams;
    • grinding and polishing.

    Wheels for metal to an angle grinder are:

    • Cut-off. They are designed for making cuts. The cutting discs for the metal angle grinder have a solid or segmented cutting edge. They are made from several types of materials. The difference in service life, price, features of work. The thickness of the cut-off wheel also plays a significant role. The thickness of the cuts and the durability of the nozzle depend on it.
    • Roughing (grinding). for grinding and removing from the metal surface of the old layer of paint, varnish, etc. A variety of roughing discs. flap: end, batch, with a mandrel. They are used in metal processing, cleaning welded seams and burrs, removing rust, etc. The end wheel is suitable for processing at an angle and normal flat. The batch disk is used when working over a large area. Mandrel wheels are used when working with cavities. Flap disc works smoother than conventional sander.
    • Stripping. to remove rust, stubborn dirt. These include disc brushes made of hard metal wire.
    • Polishing. for final polishing of surfaces. These include replaceable polishing cloth, foam and fur attachments. Metal polishing can only be done with a variable speed angle grinder.

    Use of discs for other purposes (for example, cutting disc for an angle grinder instead of a grinder) must not.

    How to properly change a disc to an angle grinder

    Since wheels for an angle grinder are consumable, sooner or later they have to be changed. They are attached to the spindle of the angle grinder using a clamping flange (nut) with an M14 thread. To unscrew it, a special open-end wrench with pins on one side must be included with the angle grinder.

    So, to replace your tool with an angle grinder, follow these steps.

    • De-energize the device by unplugging the power plug.
    • Lock the spindle of the angle grinder using the button located on the front of the housing. When the button is pressed, the stopper enters the hole of the disk installed in the gearbox, which fixes the spindle in a stationary position.
    • Insert the pins of the key into the holes on the pressure flange.
    • While holding the latch with one hand, turn the wrench to the left (counterclockwise) with the other hand until the nut comes loose. Then it can be unscrewed without a key and removed from the shaft. In this case, the spindle of the angle grinder rotates clockwise. But in which direction to unscrew the nut if your apparatus rotates the shaft counterclockwise? Remember: the clamping flange should always be unscrewed in the direction opposite to the rotation of the shaft.
    • Now you can change the tool after removing the old one. If you notice that dirt has accumulated inside the casing, then remove the bottom flange and use a steel brush to remove dirt from all surfaces.
  • Screw the flange onto the shaft by hand. Tighten the nut until you can no longer turn it without a key. After that, holding the stopper, tighten this nut with a wrench, but no more than a quarter of a turn, otherwise the disc will begin to deform.
  • After performing the above steps, the tool change is considered complete.

    Selection recommendations

    As a rule, discs for metal have a corresponding inscription on the same side where the diameter of the circle is indicated. The simplest option for the unassuming home metalwork front can be a universal or specialized 125mm cut-off wheel.

    In oral communication, this will sound like “cutting disc for metal for an angle grinder 125”. Such nozzles are best suited specifically for working with metal products, so they should not be installed when processing, for example, concrete piles. This is due to both safety considerations and the operational characteristics of the disc: the nozzle can not only wear off too quickly, but also crack. However, a metal profile, sheets, corner or channel can be cut safely with such a disc.

    Purpose of discs and attachments

    Discs for an angle grinder differ in purpose for:

    • detachable;
    • stripping
    • grinding;
    • sharpening.

    Discs for wood

    Wheels for woodworking are also suitable for cutting drywall, plastic pipes, window profiles, laminate, fiberboard, chipboard, parquet, MDF boards. They are made of high-strength steel with cutting segments (teeth) located on the outer edge.

    Saw blades for wood for an angle grinder should be selected with great care and used subject to strict safety precautions, since they are traumatic tools. It is recommended to use them only when the angle grinder is permanently fixed, with a protective cover. You need to work in a mask and gloves that fit tightly to your fingers. The safest are considered to be discs for wood, along the end of which a chain from a chainsaw is installed. In the event of a jammed power tool, the chain remains in place, and such a disc rotates idle, which will save a person from injury.

    The saw blade is similar in appearance to a circular saw blade. Its standard thickness is 2 mm. The teeth can be positioned in different ways, and the question of choosing the right circle rests on the characteristics of the wood to be sawn:

    • straight teeth. for softwood and softwood;
    • trapezoidal teeth. for medium density wood and chipboard;
    • bevel at different angles. universal use.

    For high-quality cutting of wood, you should choose cutting wheels with reinforced soldering from tungsten carbide or cobalt. For safe sawing, modern manufacturers offer discs with a special design that prevents rebound.

    Which angle grinder blade / disk for concrete, plastic, tiles and metal

    From metal wire

    Disc brushes are made of twisted steel wire. They are designed for rough cleaning work: removing rust, scale, old paint, other types of persistent plaque, burrs, and seams. There are two types of brushes in shape: ring (solid circle), braided (from twisted wire bundles).

    Where do the testing of abrasive wheels for durability and mechanical strength begin??

    All types of cut-off wheels (straight and annular profile, cup, etc.) need to be tested. It allows you to identify deviations from the standards and prevent marriage and injury during work. The same applies to cutting and abrasive discs for angle grinders. The tests are carried out as follows:

    Very often the thickness of the product differs from the indicated one by 0.1-0.2 mm. This is not very critical, but with large deviations, the disk will fail much faster.

    The cutting and grinding ratio should also be measured. This indicator strongly influences wheel wear. The higher the ratio, the more productive the angle grinder disc is. In order to operate the disc with a minimum of problems, its characteristics must be verified with GOST. Different types of circles must comply with the following standards:

    Working speed of a circle, m / s

    Angle grinder motor power, kW from

    Grinding coefficient, not less

    41, 42.400x4x32

    Steel 10: pipe 83×4 mm

    15 (stationary angle grinder)

    41.42. 230×3.0 (2.5) x22, 23

    Steel 10: pipe 21.3×2.8 mm

    1.8 (portable and hand-held angle grinder)

    • In the next step, a wheel testing machine will come in handy. Modern models are equipped with a computer and automatically feed both cutting and grinding discs. Without human intervention, metal rods are also served on which the circles are tested. A dedicated test bench has a number of special advantages. When using it, differences in feed, vibration, end loads are practically reduced to zero. Three dozen cuts or grinding operations are enough to get statistics. Then an average calculation is made and an approximate coefficient is calculated. The quality of the disc can be assessed by the compliance of this indicator with the normative one. Also, after each cut, the loss of its diameter is determined by the circle. This allows after the end of testing to calculate the rate of destruction of the product.
    • Then they move on to the most extreme stage. tear testing. You can also test the discs for flexure or side load resistance. To do this, you need to know the requirements of the European standard EN12413 and the domestic GOST 52588-2006. Disks produced by LLC TVK UKRABRAZIV can withstand loads exceeding the established norms by 1.9 and more times.
    • At the end of the check, the cutting and grinding wheels are tested for unbalance. For this, special devices are used that resemble scales. If the disc has a structural or weight imbalance, it is deflected to the side by a significant angle. It is very dangerous to use such circles. At high rotational speed, imbalance leads to intense vibration and destruction of the circle.

    The storage of abrasive wheels is not always carried out in proper conditions. To check their performance, such class D discs with a diameter of more than 200 mm are tested at speeds exceeding the operating speed by 30%. In this case, the working speed of the abrasive wheel is 20 m / s or more. The instruction says that for a disc with a diameter of less than 1000 mm, a one and a half minute test is sufficient. Larger diameter circles “drive” up to 3 minutes.

    In order for the tests to pass without excesses and correctly, the following rules are observed:

    • synthetic circles. both grinding and abrasive. firmly fixed to the spindle;
    • the discs are well balanced and tested for strength before mounting on the machine;
    • the circles are reliably protected with protective covers;
    • check that the disk is freely attached to the seating surface (the diameter of its hole should be 0.1-1.5 mm higher than that for the seating surface);
    • gaskets made of rubber, cardboard, leather (thickness 0.5-3 mm in accordance with the diameter of the disc) are installed between the circle and the clamping surfaces.

    The use of protective shields on the test bench is also highly desirable. This prevents the penetration of the cutting fluid on the examiner’s skin. Such carelessness can lead to serious skin diseases. Test benches are also equipped with lifting and installation devices that significantly hug the work.

    Discs that have been mechanically altered or exposed to chemicals are treated in a special way. They are run on the machine for 10 minutes at a speed that exceeds the operating speed by 60%. The same applies to laps where there is no indication of the maximum permissible speed.

    Abrasive Cut-off and Grinding Wheels Test: How to Perform It Correctly? Test bench.

    Working with an angle grinder requires not only special skills, but also high-quality equipment. For this reason, the testing of abrasive wheels, both cut-off and grinding wheels, plays an important role.

    Rigorous testing will determine if the products can be used for complex operations. After all, beautiful packaging of a well-known brand does not mean impeccable quality. New brands that have not yet established themselves are constantly appearing on the market. At the same time, the number of counterfeit products of famous European companies is growing.

    At the same time, the leading Ukrainian manufacturers of these products have significantly increased production standards and produce products of a fairly high level of quality, which has already been assessed in the EU countries, as evidenced by European certificates. Therefore, wheels are checked for strength and wear resistance according to strictly defined rules.

    Should I pay attention to improper storage of grinding and cutting wheels??

    In some cases, experts advise not to even start checking disks. Even if their composition meets standards, improper storage conditions will easily render them unusable.

    Wheels should be discarded if they were stored in an unheated warehouse with high humidity.

    The way they were folded is also important. Circles without sharp edges should be folded “edge-on”, with the smallest ones. on the upper shelves. Conical and bowl-shaped discs are laid out with the flat side so that the working parts touch. Diamond wheels are kept in boxes, and “plates”. stacks 300 m high.

    If these storage rules are not followed, checking for knowingly damaged wheels will result in serious injury.

    Requirements for the test bench

    Manufacturing and working with stands for testing grinding and cutting discs are strictly regulated.

    It is important that the machine is installed on a rigid base away from other equipment. It must be supplemented with a locking mechanism. This prevents the drive from starting when the test chamber is opened without removing the test load. It is also necessary to check the direction of the thread. For the circle to be securely fixed, it must be opposite to the direction of rotation of the machine spindle.

    The test bench must be equipped with a spindle speed meter. The error of this parameter when setting the required speed should not exceed 5%. The radial runout of the spindle is traditionally no more than 0.03 mm.

    During the test, the test chamber can only be opened after the spindle has come to a complete stop. This will prevent injury to the worker in the event of a break in the circle. It is very important to regularly inspect the stand, which is carried out at least once every 2-2.5 months.

    Before starting the tests, the discs are carefully inspected for cracks and coating detachment. To do this, they are suspended and carefully tapped with a wooden hammer weighing 145-200 g. If there are no cracks or deformations, the circle should sound clean. Discs of types PN, PR, K, PNV, PNR, as well as roller grinding wheels, are not tested for mechanical strength.

    The height of the test flange and the width of the annular clamping surface of the stand must comply with the provisions of GOST 2270. It is important that the outer diameter of the circle coincides with the width of the annular clamping surface at the flanges. This allows you to grip it well during testing. The thickness of the gaskets between the flanges and the disc is 0.5-1 mm. They must completely cover the entire clamping surface of the flanges. In this case, the gaskets evenly look outward along the entire perimeter of the flanges by at least 1 mm.

    All circles must be centered before testing. If the diameter of its hole is increased in comparison with the diameter of the stand spindle, the use of intermediate sleeves is allowed. Their outer diameter must match the diameter of the disc hole. The height of the seating surface of such a sleeve is not less than 0.5 of the height of the tested disc.

    It is also allowed to test several disks of the same size at the same time. They are placed on one or different ends of the shaft. In the latter case, the circles are separated by intermediate flanges. Their diameter and annular clamping surface are completely similar to those for the main flanges. If one or more disks break, the tests are interrupted and replaced with new ones.

    Grinding wheels and cut-off wheels are tested in basically the same way, regardless of manufacturer and characteristics. It is important to follow the testing procedure exactly. and the result will be reliable.

    LLC “TVK” UKRABRAZIV “pays great attention to compliance with the declared and certified level of product quality, its stability. The technical control department (QCD) checks each batch of manufactured products. Not a single disc arrives at the consumer without passing all the regulated levels of control.
