How to wind the line onto the spool of the Husqvarna grass trimmer

Preparation for winding the line

Before the winding process, it is necessary to remove the spool with line from the body. Depending on the manufacturer, power and type (electric or gasoline), there are three design types of trimmers:

This model provides the ability to install a knife. Removing the coil in such models is done by means of two keys recessed into the coil body. To mount the trimmer knife, it is necessary to align the hole of the reel and the rod, and then insert the device in the form of a steel pin (screwdriver, iron bar). After fixing the coil, the body can be easily unscrewed by hand in a clockwise direction.

Single-barb grass trimmer reel

Many owners and specialists note the ease of use and ease of refueling the bobbin with one mustache. Depending on the manufacturer, the length of the threaded line can vary from 2 to 5 meters. The end of the line is inserted into the head into a special technological groove or hole, and the winding is carried out in the direction opposite to the working rotation of the bobbin. Most reels have arrow marks on the outside of the body that indicate the direction of travel of the grass trimmer reel.

After winding, you need to leave a free end of 15-30 cm to enhance the centrifugal force, which is decisive when removing the trimmer line in automatic and semi-automatic spools. We pass the left end through the working hole of the coil and assemble the head.

How to wind the line correctly on the grass trimmer spool

A gasoline or electric grass trimmer is an indispensable tool in the arsenal of a modern summer resident or owner of his own home.

Thanks to these gardening devices, even a large garden plot can be mowed with ease. After purchasing this tool and performing several mows, many people think about how to properly wind the line on the reel of the grass trimmer. For an inexperienced user, the first operation to replace it will seem problematic and time-consuming, since the developers often do not fully reflect the instructions for replacing the fishing line in the operating manual.

How to change or wind the line on the grass trimmer reel: methods and nuances of winding, winding with your own hands

Any garden owner knows how quickly weeds can fill an area. A grass trimmer will help you to defeat them without undue effort. This incredibly useful device is an indispensable tool for trimming and mowing grass.

It is no secret that an ordinary lawn mower cannot be used everywhere. In contrast, the trimmer can handle even very difficult areas. This is especially true for those tools in which not a knife, but a fishing line acts as a cutting element.

How to replace string trimmer line on Husqvarna 128LD

a grass trimmer that mows grass with a fishing line can be used near: houses and other buildings, fences and hedges, trees and shrubs, flower beds and flower beds, row spacing in a garden plot.

Such a convenient, and most importantly, effective device, like a grass trimmer, exists in several variations:

  • petrol;
  • rechargeable;
  • electric.

As the names suggest, the types of grass trimmer are noticeably different from one another. But regardless of the type of this tool, a fishing line can be its cutting element. Of course, the line tucked into the reel of the grass trimmer is not endless. And sooner or later you will need to replace it with a new one.

Line consumption directly depends on the frequency of use of the device and the scale of the work performed. The more grass is cut and the more often it is trimmed with the grass trimmer, the more active the line is. And, accordingly, the faster it will end. In this regard, the question arises: how to tuck the line into the reel of the grass trimmer?

Not everyone knows the answer to this question. But winding the line on a reel plays an important role in the operation of the grass trimmer. For the device to function properly, it is very important to properly wind the new line onto the reel. How to change the line on the trimmer, and will be discussed in this article.

The first way to wind the line

The required amount of line has been cut off. Now you need to carefully examine the bobbin in order to understand what type it belongs to. It depends on how the line is to be wound on it.

There are two types of bobbins. In general, they differ slightly from each other. Regardless of the type, the coil is divided into two sections. upper and lower. In the first type, the dividing edge does not close into a ring and has a depression.

In the second type, it is solid, but near it there are small through holes on the sides on both sides. The method of winding the thread must be studied depending on which of the above types the coil belongs to.

  • The previously prepared six-meter segment must be bent in half. It is best not exactly in the middle, but in such a way that one half is about fifteen centimeters longer.
  • Then the place of the fold must be inserted into the recess in the dividing face. One half of the line should be at the top of the reel, the other half at the bottom.
  • Now you can start winding directly. You need to wind in the direction of the arrow on the bobbin. When winding, you need to keep the threads so that they do not intertwine and the upper half winds up in the upper part of the spool, and the lower half in the lower part. Each half should have about fifteen centimeters free from the end.
  • There are small indentations (or, in other words, grooves) in the upper edge of the bobbin to secure the consumable. The ends of the threads must be inserted into these grooves so that they are fixed against each other.
  • The final step of loading the consumables into the tool is to thread the ends attached to the bobbin into the corresponding holes in the grass trimmer head.
  • That’s all. The winding process is complete. Now all that remains is to assemble the head into a single whole. The spring fits neatly back between the bobbin and the head. Then you need to insert the bobbin into the head and press them together.
  • It is recommended that the free ends of the thread be pulled out more. To do this, pull the ends of the consumable one by one so that they are removed from the grooves of the bobbin. You can make sure that the cutting element is removed from the retaining grooves by trying to pull the threads a little. they should freely exit through the holes in the head.
  • While pressing the bobbin down, you need to put the cover over it. The cover must be screwed to the head so that all the grooves on their bodies are aligned and the bobbin remains fixed between them.
  • And finally, the very last action. the head is screwed back into place at the bottom of the tool.

The process is complete. The line is tucked into a reel. grass trimmer ready for further work.

Second winding method

  • A previously prepared six-meter-long segment is required to be bent exactly in the middle and cut. Thus, two segments of the same length are obtained.
  • At one end of each segment, you need to make a small “hook”. To do this, it is necessary to bend a couple of centimeters from the edge and fix it for a short time so that the “hook” does not unbend.
  • Then one segment is taken. The hook is inserted into the through hole at the top of the bobbin.
  • Now you can proceed to the key stage. winding. The direction in which to wind is indicated by an arrow on the bobbin. It is important to make sure that the line is wound strictly within the upper part of the reel. You do not need to wind the thread to the very tip. about fifteen centimeters should remain free from the end.
  • In the upper edge of the spool there are small recesses (so-called grooves) for fixing the consumable. The loose “tail” of the thread must be inserted into one of these grooves.
  • The top of the coil is tucked in. Now you need to do the same procedure with the bottom. Take the second piece of thread. The “hook” is threaded through the through hole at the bottom of the bobbin.
  • After that, you can start winding the fishing line (within the lower compartment). And for this segment, you also need to leave about fifteen centimeters free from the end. This remaining “tail” must be inserted into the notch opposite to the one into which the end of the first segment was inserted.

The subsequent steps for this type of coils are exactly the same as described for the previous type in paragraphs five to nine.

This is how the line in the grass trimmer spool changes. There is nothing complicated in the process. And already after several refuelings, all actions will come to automatism.

To visually study the process described above, you can turn to the Internet for help. The popular portal has many different videos showing how to wind the line on the reel of a grass trimmer.

Thickness selection

In addition, you should pay special attention to the thickness of the consumable. For mowing young grass, a thread with a diameter of one and a half millimeters is suitable. The larger the diameter of the thread, the drier and coarser weeds it is capable of overpowering.

When choosing a fishing line by thickness, there is one “but”. It is important not only to assess the capabilities of the material, but also to take into account the features of the grass trimmer. Be sure to check the user manual that came with your tool for information on cutting element requirements.

Using the wrong thread can damage the tool. Using a thread that is too thick will overload the machine’s motor. And the use of a thread that is too thin will significantly increase the wear of the twisting mechanism.

That is why the choice of consumables must be approached no less responsibly than filling it into the grass trimmer. When a suitable fishing line is found and purchased, you can begin to consider ways of winding it on a reel.

At first glance, threading a line into the reel of a tool is not an easy task. But it is enough to carefully study this process. and in the future, all the necessary actions will be performed without any difficulties.

Read this guide to learn how to line your grass trimmer. The step-by-step instructions below take into account the peculiarities of the spools of different types of trimmers, therefore, it is applicable to any tool.

  • The line spool is the bottom edge of the grass trimmer. First of all, of course, you need to remove this head from the device. To do this, you need to fix the rod (or, in other words, the shaft) on which the coil is attached. It is required to fix it in such a way that it does not scroll. The easiest way to do this is by placing a kind of stupor (preferably metal) between the shaft threads through a special hole. When the shaft is fixed, the spool can be unscrewed.
  • At this stage, you have to remove the bobbin from the head, on which the fishing line is attached. To do this, you need to disassemble the head into elements. To do this, you first need to find a retainer on its body. It is located on the circumference of the product and is like a button. When the latch is found, you need to press it firmly. Keeping the latch pressed, turn the head cover clockwise. Then you need to remove the cover and remove the bobbin.
  • A tight spring is placed between the bobbin and the head. It needs to be put aside for a while so that it does not interfere with the winding process. Before proceeding with the step of winding the line, it is necessary to inspect the bobbin. If there are remnants of old fishing line on it, they must be removed. When the bobbin is cleaned, you can start preparing a new bobbin.
  • From a previously prepared skein of new fishing line, it is necessary to measure and cut off six (maximum. seven) meters. Keep the bobbin close at hand.

At this point, the key stage actually begins, which this article is devoted to.

Winding process

If your coil is designed to work with only one tendril, then it’s simple. You need to unwind 2-4 m of fishing line (depending on the size of the reel), find a fixing hole for the line on the inside of the reel, insert one end of the line there and start winding the line in the direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the reel on the trimmer. On the inside of the reel, they usually indicate with an arrow in which direction to wind the line. After winding the fishing line, we leave a small piece of it unwound to expose it. We fix this piece in a special groove located on the inner part of the reel and designed so that the line does not unwind at the time of collecting the reel. If there is no such groove, then you will have to hold the fishing line with your finger to prevent it from unwinding during the further collection of the coil. Next, we take the outer part of the coil and thread the outer piece of fishing line into the existing hole, assemble and put the coil back on the grass trimmer.

If the coil is designed to work with two antennae, then do the following. On the inside of the reel, we look at how many grooves there are for winding the fishing line. There may be one or two of them. If there is only one groove, then both antennae are wound along this one groove. If there are two grooves, then each antenna is wound along its own groove. A reel with one groove should have a through hole through which the line is threaded. We unwind 2-4 m of fishing line, thread it through this hole so that it sticks out equally on each side of the fishing line. And we simultaneously wind both antennae of the fishing line in the same direction, opposite to the direction of rotation of the coil on the trimmer and coinciding with the direction indicated by the arrow on the inside of the coil. We leave a little of the fishing line unwound, fix the resulting ends in special grooves, and if they are not there, we hold them with our fingers. We pass both ends into the existing holes on the outer casing of the coil. We collect the coil and attach it to the trimmer.

If there are two grooves, fold a piece of fishing line 2-4 m long in half, insert the loop obtained at the place of the fold into the groove between the two grooves, and simultaneously wind both ends of the fishing line along its own groove. Further actions are similar to the previous option.

There are also reels in which the fishing line is threaded through a through hole on the inside. After that, the ends of the line, without winding, are threaded completely through the holes on the outer body of the reel, collect the reel and begin to rotate the button, which is usually pressed, in order to release the line during operation as it wears out. Rotate the button. the fishing line itself is wound inside. At the same time, it will not work to turn it in the “wrong” direction, since it can only rotate in one direction. If you get used to it, you can wind fishing line on such a reel without even disassembling it. you just need to combine the through hole of the inner drum with the holes on the outer body of the reel, and then thread the fishing line through them.

That’s all on this issue. Happy winding!

How does the head with a fishing line work on a brushcutter why you need to know the principle of operation

Depending on the manufacturer, the heads differ structurally not only externally, but also internally. Most drums have a pressure spring inside (semi-automatic and automatic). Above is an instruction on how to disassemble the grass trimmer head without a spring, i.e. on the head of the manual type. The principle of dismantling a semi-automatic head with a spring inside is almost identical to the instructions described above.

The principle of operation of the semi-automatic grass trimmer coil is as follows:

  • Inside the head there is a coil, which is fitted on the slots, which prevent its free movement.
  • A spring acts on the coil, which presses it against the splines in the cover structure
  • A fishing line is wound on the tip, the length of which depends on the tool itself. Typically this length is between 1 and 4 meters.
  • During the performance of work, if it is necessary to increase the length of the line, the protruding part of the drum is pressed, whereby it disengages from the splines. In this case, the fishing line is unwound from the drum, increasing in length
  • After releasing the required amount of fishing line, release the pressure and continue cutting the grass

The advantage of a tool with a line is that this consumable does not require sharpening, compared to metal discs. In addition, if a stone or a tree comes across on the way, the line simply breaks off, without adversely affecting the gearbox and engine of the tool, as is the case with metal cutting discs.

Knowing the design and device of the types of mowing or trimmer heads, it is necessary to go on to consider the process of threading the line into the grass trimmer reel. After all, it is this very moment that causes difficulties for most owners of special tools.

How to remove the spool from the grass trimmer and remove the line

Initially, remove the line from the spool of the grass trimmer before threading it into the spool. A reel or aiming device is a device that sits inside the mowing head, bobbin or drum. There are different types of heads (depending on the manufacturer), but the principle of replacing the line on the reel is the same for everyone. First of all, we will figure out how to remove the head from the tool, as well as how to get the drum and fishing line out of it.

It is interesting! The tooling can be changed directly on the tool, but if you are doing this for the first time, it is still recommended to remove the head and study the detailed winding process. After the technology has been mastered, you can perform replacement work on a trimmer, a brushcutter or a petrol cutter.

The instruction on how to unscrew the manual head on the trimmer is as follows:

  • Turn the tool upside down and, if necessary, clean it from dirt. With two fingers of one hand, grip the cover latches (on the mowing head), which are symmetrically positioned to each other. After lightly pressing them inward, remove the protective cover from the drum
  • Next, remove the line spool from the drum shaft. It is mounted on a shaft without fasteners, therefore it can be removed with one hand.
  • The main part of the drum is fixed with a screw, which must be unscrewed with a screwdriver with an appropriate tip or bit
  • To unscrew, hold the drum base with one hand, and unscrew it counterclockwise with a screwdriver with the other.
  • After that, you can proceed to dismantling. To do this, you do not need to pull it with all your strength, but slightly shaking it to the sides, slowly disengage it from the metal shaft on which the drum is seated.
  • When reinstalling, fit the head into the square slots

This process is not difficult, and as you know, there is no need to dismantle the entire head if you know how the replacement is performed. When dismantling, consider the following nuances:

  • Periodic removal of the head is recommended to prevent corrosion of the threaded connection. If you never unscrew the screw, then if necessary, it will be difficult and even impossible to do this.
  • If the screw has a four-sided bore of the head, then for unscrewing it is necessary to select a screwdriver or bits of a suitable size in order to exclude the licking of the edges on the head
  • When assembling the unit, treat the threaded seat with lubricants, for example, grease or machine oil.
  • If the edges on the screw are licked, then special clamping pliers can be used to unscrew it.
  • There are drums that do not require preliminary disassembly. To dismantle them, grab it and rotate in the opposite direction to the clockwise direction

Knowing how to disassemble the drum, you should continue to figure out how to change the grass trimmer line. The video below shows the detailed process of how to open the grass trimmer coil and disassemble it.

Method 1. how to properly wind the line or put it on a reel and choose the required length

To implement this method, you will need to first prepare a fishing line of the required length (usually up to 4 meters). It all depends on the thickness of the equipment used, as well as the design of the coil. There is an easy way to find out the amount of line you need to refuel to charge the reel. To do this, wind the rig inside the coil until it is aligned with the side protrusions. In this case, the rigging should not go beyond these extreme protrusions.

The thicker the equipment used, the shorter its length will be needed and vice versa, the thinner, the longer the segment will be needed.

The instruction on how to properly tuck the harness into the aiming of the grass trimmer or brushcutter is as follows:

  • To begin with, a piece of fishing line that was prepared to be installed in a reel must be folded in half. In this case, one edge should protrude more than the second by 10-15 cm
  • After that, take the second end from the other side, and bend it in half. Move to it so that the measured protrusion of 15 cm is preserved
  • There is a slot in the inner baffle of the coil, into which the resulting loop should be inserted. The cut in the wall is shown in the photo below.
  • Next, we figure out the direction of winding the line. If you wind the rig in the wrong direction, then it will not function correctly, and you will need to redo the work. To insert the line and wind it in the correct direction, inspect the surface of the spool. It should indicate the direction of winding (in 99% of cases, this direction is indicated). What the direction indicator on the coil looks like is shown in the photo below.
  • This arrow-shaped pointer can also have the designation, as in the example above “WIND LINE”, which means the direction of winding. If the pointer is missing on the reel, then you need to look at the head. There is a direction of its rotation on the head, and in order to properly wind the line, wind it on the drum in the opposite direction to the indication of the arrow indicator. So, if the arrow is on the tip, then you need to wind in the indicated direction, and if it is not there, then you should wind against the direction of the arrow on the surface of the head
  • Having decided on the direction of rotation, you should start winding. Each end should be guided in its own groove. If there is no separator, then the equipment must be laid in the appropriate distribution order.
  • When almost all the fishing line is wound on a reel, you will need to do the following. place a short part in the hole of the side wall of the pickup, the protrusion of which should be up to 10-15 cm, and then do the same procedure with the other end, placing it in the hole on the parallel side
  • We insert the coil into the head, first passing the ends of the fishing line into the holes of the drum
  • We put the drum in place and, by pulling the ends of the line, we disengage them from the temporary clamps in the wall of the reel. After that, you can put on the cover until the latch engages.
  • At this point, the process of how to replace the fishing line on the trimmer is completed, and if necessary, you can cut only the ends (if their length does not suit), and install the assembled drum on the tool

With how to put the drum in place, no difficulties arise. There is a second way, how to charge the mowing equipment in the brushcutter. What is the difference and how the second method of threading the line onto the reel of the brushcutter is carried out, we will find out in detail.

Instructions

In order to change the line, you need to remove the old one (if it was).

wind, line, onto, spool

The reel is the part of the grass trimmer structure that is located inside the brush head, drum or bobbin. Heads may vary depending on the manufacturer. But this article only covers Patriot, although their mechanism is used by many other companies.

Instructions on how to unscrew the manual head on the trimmer are described below.

  • First of all, you need to clean the head from dirt and adhering grass, if it is dirty. To do this, lift the brushcutter head up and, grasping the casing, remove the special protective cover that is put on the drum.
  • The next step is to remove the spool from the drum. The reel can be easily removed even with one hand, because it is not fixed in any way inside the drum.
  • The drum itself is fixed in the trimmer with a bolt. This bolt must be unscrewed, after which you can easily pull out the drum. To do this carefully, you should support the drum with the spool, while unscrewing the screw counterclockwise.
  • Now you can pull the coil out. As mentioned above, it is not secured by anything, except for a hook with a metal shaft, so it does not need to be pulled out with force. Carefully, in a circular motion, pull the spool out of the drum.
  • Now it remains to remove the old fishing line and follow the following instructions.

Installing the spool and drum in their original place is performed according to the reverse algorithm.

Before threading the line, make sure you have purchased the correct thread for the grass trimmer. In the event that the thread does not fit, the fuel or energy consumption increases, as well as the load on the engine of the brushcutter.

In order to replace the thread itself directly, you need to prepare a piece of thread of the required size. Most often, this requires about 4 m of line. The specific figure will depend on the parameters of the thread, for example, its thickness, as well as on the parameters of the spool itself. If you cannot accurately determine the length, you can do the following: insert and wind the thread until the coil is fully charged (the line level will be compared with the protrusions on the sides of the coil). It is necessary to ensure that the line sits evenly in the reel.

The instructions for threading the line into the spool are described below.

The prepared thread must be taken and folded in half. It should be ensured that one edge is 0.1-0.15 m longer than the other. Now you need to take the ends in different hands. The one that is smaller must be tightened to the larger one so that it becomes 2 times shorter. When bending, you should maintain an offset of 0.15m. Locate the slot inside the coil baffle. Gently thread the loop you made earlier into this slot. To continue working, it is necessary to determine the direction of winding of the thread in the bobbin. To do this, it is enough to inspect the coil. there should be an arrow on it. If it was not possible to find an arrow-pointer, then it is quite possible that there is a written designation. An example is shown in the photo below. It is necessary to inspect the coil head. There is a direction indicator on it. However, this is the direction of movement of the coil. To get the winding direction, you need to wind in the opposite direction. Now you need to load the spool with line.

It is worth noting that there are special guide grooves inside the coil. Follow these grooves when winding the thread, otherwise the grass trimmer may be damaged.

At this stage, you need to charge the coil very carefully. When the user winds almost the entire thread, take the short end (do not forget about the 0.15m protrusion) and pull it into the hole located in the wall of the reel. Now you need to repeat this action in the same way with the other end (on the other side). Place the reel itself in the head of the reel, before that threading the line through the holes inside the drum. Now is the time to put the drum back in place. After that, you need to take the ends of the line with both hands and pull them to the sides. Then you need to put the lid back on (here you can safely make efforts until a characteristic click is heard). Remained to do the “cosmetic work”. We need to see if the thread is too long. You can start the grass trimmer and check in practice if everything is comfortable. If the thread comes out a little long, you can cut it with scissors.

Technical properties of the cord and the choice of diameter according to the power of the grass trimmer

If you take a package of fishing line in your hands, then only two main parameters are indicated on it. these are the total length and section. There is no instruction on how to choose a line for a grass trimmer, so you have to ask a specialist. Finding a good specialist is not so easy, especially since every year not only new lines are produced, but also reels.

The first thing to decide is the diameter, thickness or section of the cord. All this is one parameter that characterizes the performance of work with trimmers, petrol cutters, brushcutters and lawn mowers. What is the section to buy for my grass trimmer? In order not to be mistaken, you should take a piece of the old cord with you and give it to the seller. Based on the segment provided by you, the seller will issue a similar section of the cord.

This option is certainly reliable, but it cannot be called correct. Why? After all, the choice of fishing line depends not only on the head used, but also on the power of the tool used. To begin with, it is recommended to decide what diameter of line can be used on trimmers and petrol cutters, depending on their power parameters:

  • Electric grass trimmers with a power rating of up to 500 W. cords with a cross section of up to 1.6 mm are used. These tools are designed for cutting young grass in backyard areas.
  • Gasoline and electric units with power ratings from 500 to 1000 W. imply the use of cords with a thickness of 2 to 2.4 mm. Such units with consumables are used for cutting thin and thick grass, as well as weeds. In grass trimmers with a power of up to 1 kW, you can install a fishing line with a diameter of 1-1.6 mm, but it will wear out quickly
  • grass trimmers and lawn mowers with power ratings over 1 kW. allow the use of cord thickness from 2.4 to 3.3 mm. Such a fishing line can be used to cut off thick and dried stems, as well as dense thickets. If a consumable with a thickness of more than 3 mm does not cope with the task of cutting grass, then metal discs with blades, teeth and knives are used

It is interesting! Manufacturers produce trimmer line with a diameter of more than 3.3 mm, only it is used extremely rarely, and only on powerful gasoline units.

Preparing to replace the line

Before replacing the line, you need to pull out and then disassemble the head. Usually it includes a casing, a spring (on some models), a bobbin with a line, a cover. It is necessary to unplug the electric grass trimmer (or turn off the gasoline trimmer), and then proceed to remove the coil. It can be fixed in two different ways: in the first case, it is necessary to completely disassemble the head, and in the second, just remove it from the gearbox shaft, on which it is attached.

find the latches on both sides, press and remove the cover to open the internal structure of the head;

there is a bobbin under the cover, it must be carefully pulled out of the case (sometimes a spring is hidden under it, it should also be carefully removed to the side so as not to lose it);

  • after removing the spool, a fixing bolt (or screw) becomes noticeable in the center of the body, which must be unscrewed in the opposite direction to the clockwise movement;
  • after removing the fasteners, it is necessary to remove the coil from the gearbox shaft with shaking movements.

The second method involves the following actions. The spool head is put on the gearbox shaft. To disconnect it, you need to lock this shaft. Usually in braids, for example, of the “Champion” or “STIHL” brand, a hole is made for this, into which a nail, rod or screwdriver is inserted. After fixing the shaft in a stationary position, it is necessary, holding by the body, to start rotating the head clockwise, since the thread on the shaft is usually left.

Now that the head has been removed and disassembled, it is necessary to determine how thick the cord should be. You can find out the correct diameter for your grass trimmer by looking at the owner’s manual or at the bobbin itself, usually this information is indicated on it. Another way is to insert the thread into the hole from which it is fed. If the shit goes without difficulty, it can be used for work.

How to properly wind the line around the spool of the grass trimmer?

Despite the fact that gardening equipment has been used for quite some time, it is still a novelty for some owners of private houses. This is why there are often questions about how to properly wind the line on an electric or gasoline grass trimmer.

This is essentially a simple operation, but all its stages must be performed correctly in order to achieve the desired result. over, in the operating instructions, only a few manufacturers provide an answer to this painful question. Explore the article and find out how the line winds around the reel of the grass trimmer.

How to wind the line onto the spool of the grass trimmer

First of all, you should be aware that grass trimmers have different working attachments. The reel can be designed for different lengths and thicknesses of the line. this point should be taken into account when purchasing consumables.

So how do you load the line into the reel of your grass trimmer? All work is divided into several stages:

  • First you need to disassemble the grass trimmer head.
  • Unscrew the nozzle by rotating the drum to the right.
  • Press with your fingers on the two latches located on different sides of the entrance, and remove the top cover of the nozzle. You can pry off the cover with a screwdriver. This should be done carefully: reels with automatic line feed have a spring that can forcefully throw the cover along with all the contents of the reel.
  • Remove scraps of old fishing line.
  • Now you need to find the middle of the line. To do this, unwind it to the required length (for example, 10 m), cut and fold it in half.
  • Hook the middle of the line into the existing groove or insert it into the hole specially designed for this. And start winding. Direction is indicated by an arrow, which is usually located on the grass trimmer reel body (usually against the rotation of the drum). Some models have a double-sided spool: in this case, the line should be wound in different directions: one end in one direction, the other in the other, while the loop of the line must be inserted into the dividing slot located in the middle.
  • Leave loose ends of the line about 20 cm each. Later they will need to be fixed in the recesses.
  • And finally, the last step will be the assembly of the drum. Reinstall the washers and spring. On the upper ring of the reel there are two notches where you need to tuck the antennae of the fishing line. Thread them through the holes and place the spool in the drum, trying to tighten the line without displacing the spring.
  • Place the drum cover on top and close it with your fingers. The latches will snap into place with a distinctive click.

When you turn on the grass trimmer, the excess line will be cut off by the trimming blade.

As you can see, winding the line around the reel of the grass trimmer is easy: the main thing is to do everything right. And here are some more tips that will come in handy when choosing a fishing line, winding it and subsequent work:

  • fishing line comes in different thicknesses and with different sections. The best option for winding is the “native” line for this model;
  • never use fishing line or metal cables for the grass trimmer. Such a substitution may seem effective, but it is very dangerous. Jumping off a working grass trimmer, the cable can seriously injure not only the lawnmower himself, but also those around him;
  • the line is cut when the working grass trimmer touches hard objects. Try not to allow this, otherwise you will have to stop each time, turn off the device and rewind the line on the reel;
  • Use regular line for cutting lawn grass and pigtail line for coarse weeds. It is more durable and will not constantly cut.

  • find the latches on both sides, press and remove the cover to open the internal structure of the head;
  • there is a bobbin under the cover, it must be carefully pulled out of the case (sometimes a spring is hidden under it, it should also be carefully removed to the side so as not to lose it);

  • after removing the spool, a fixing bolt (or screw) becomes noticeable in the center of the body, which must be unscrewed in the opposite direction to the clockwise movement;

On a note! To understand how much line to wind for the reel, you need to wind it on the bobbin so that the height of the skein does not exceed the diameter of the sides. If the cord protrudes beyond the edges, the spool cannot be hidden in the casing.

Trimmer head with automatic threading

For heads with automatic threading, it is enough just to wind and clamp the edges of the line, and the tool will perform further winding on its own when turned on. It is impossible to make a mistake here, because the coil itself recognizes how the antennae should be located.

On a note! The advantages of trimmers with such a head include the convenience of laying the cord, and the disadvantages are the high cost and difficult repairs.

On a reel with two antennae

In bobbins of this type, it is necessary to inspect the inner side of the coil and determine the number of grooves for winding the cord provided in it.

Important! If there is only one groove in the coil, then both antennae must be wound along a common groove, if two, then along separate tracks.

For winding, you need to take a piece of fishing line with a length of two to three meters. For spools with one groove, thread the line through the hole, align the whiskers, align and wind on the spool in the opposite direction of its rotation during operation. If fixing grooves are provided, thread the ends of the cord through them, then pull them out into the outlet, then close the coil and put it back on.

For double-fluted spools, the difference is that the string must be folded in half. Next, you need to charge the middle of the fold into the groove between the grooves, then wind each of the pieces of fishing line along its own path, fix the antennae and assemble the coil as well as a spool with one track.

The line is flying out

If the string flies out during mowing, this is another indication that the spring in the bobbin has weakened or completely lost during careless disassembly of the head. As a result, the cord does not hold and pops out when rotating.

How to properly change the line on the trimmer

The grass trimmer is a handy and easy-to-use tool for cutting grass and trimming small shrubs and trees. As a cutting element, it often uses a fishing line (string, cord), because it costs less than disc knives and is safer to use. With intensive use of the tool, over time, you will need to change the line on the trimmer. This process is the same on mowers from different manufacturers, be it Husqvarna or Huter, with possible minor differences.

On a reel with one tendril

It is very easy to screw the line onto a reel with one tendril. In such designs, depending on the brand of grass trimmer, from two to five meters of cord is placed. The edge of the line in the spool must be tucked into a special hole or groove, after which the string is wound in the direction opposite to the rotation of the reel during operation.

Advice! To understand in which direction to wind the thread, you should look at the spool body. usually there are marks on it indicating the direction of the spool movement during operation.

After the line is wound, you need to leave a small piece (15-30 cm), thread it into the spool outlet and reassemble the head.

The string does not come out

In automatic and semi-automatic reels, the cord is fed without stopping the grass trimmer. If this does not happen, then:

  • the line in the head is not wound correctly, so the reel does not spin;
  • the winding of the fishing line is uneven, so the cord gets stuck between the turns and does not come out. so that this does not happen, the thread must be wound carefully, avoiding distortions, turn to turn;
  • the ends of the cord coming out of the holes are very short, there is not enough centrifugal force to pull them out, so the line is not fed. before turning on the grass trimmer, it is imperative to adjust the length of the thread and lengthen it slightly, if necessary;
  • cord stuck.

The cord lengthens spontaneously

There are times when the user of the grass trimmer notices a very fast line flow. At the same time, he never hit the ground with a button to lengthen the line. The reason that the line spontaneously lengthens, being cut on a special knife on the casing of the device, may be the absence of a spring in the mowing head. Often novice users of mowers, trying to load the line into the reel, forget to install the pressure spring in the head, or completely lose it when opening the lid, and in the future, do not even know about its existence.

Also, the line can be lengthened without using a button if the spring is loose. If checking the spring has confirmed this fact, then several washers must be placed under it in order to enhance its clamping properties.

DIY grass trimmer coil repair

The grass trimmer, whether petrol or electric, is the only solution for mowing grass in tight spaces that a wheeled lawnmower cannot handle. As a cutting tool in trimmers, metal knives or a special line are used, which is tucked into the coil of the grass trimmer. But, unfortunately, trimmer heads become unusable over time during operation. Some malfunctions can be eliminated by hand, and some require a complete replacement of the mowing head.

Grass trimmer coil device

Trimmer mowing heads come in a variety of designs, both simple and complex. The picture below shows an exploded view of a semi-automatic trimmer head from a Husqvarna (Husqvarna) brushcutter.

This type of head is present on most mowers and electric trimmers, such as STIHL (STIHL), Patriot (Patriot), Champion (Champion), Bosch (Bosch), Huter (Huter) and others. The device of the mowing head is quite simple. It includes the following details:

  • mowing head base;
  • button for semi-automatic cord feed;
  • bobbin (spool) into which the fishing line is tucked;
  • spring;
  • eyes. through them the line comes out;
  • trimmer head cover;
  • line (cord).

There are also simpler trim heads shown in the following photo.

All these attachments do not allow you to change the length of the line in a semi-automatic mode (after pressing a button). If the cord breaks, you have to stop the mower and change it manually.

How to remove the spool and replace the line

Trimmer owners, mostly beginners, find themselves in confusion, bordering on panic, when the need arises to change the cutter or line in the reel. Very often, when trying to unscrew the mowing head, users simply render it unusable, not suspecting that it is unscrewing in the opposite direction. To prevent this from happening, if you need to replace the tool, it is recommended that you read the step-by-step instructions below.

  • Switch off the brushcutter engine or power off the electric grass trimmer before threading the line into the spool to avoid injury from accidental starting rotation of the cutting tool.
  • Unscrew the attachment attached to the gearbox shaft. To do this, the shaft must be fixed by aligning the holes on the washer and on the axle, and inserting a metal rod or screwdriver into them.
  • Unscrew the nozzle. You should be aware that the thread on the shaft is left-handed. Therefore, turn the grass trimmer coil to the right, that is, clockwise.
  • Disassemble the mowing head. Most often, the head cover is attached to the clips. To remove it, you will need to sink these latches into the case, pressing the edges of the cover. If your trimmer has a semi-automatic mowing head with a button on the bottom, then the disassembly of the attachment should be done carefully, since you can lose the spring, which sometimes flies out when the cover is removed.
  • Cut off the required amount of line. Usually its length is 5 meters. Use a cord of the same diameter as indicated in the instructions for the tool. It is not recommended to exceed the maximum line diameter as this will result in increased engine load and higher gas mileage.
  • Find the midpoint of the line by folding it in half. You will have a loop.
  • Special grooves are cut inside the coil (there may be holes). Insert a loop of line into this groove.
  • Wind the line around the spool by turning it counterclockwise. It is necessary to fill in the cord as evenly as possible, the turns should lie down without overlapping and with good tension. When the winding is finished, leave free ends of the line about 20 cm long and fix them in the grooves on the sides of the reel.
  • Assemble the mowing head. Be sure to insert the spring and washer (if equipped) before final assembly of the accessory. Place the spool in the body and thread the ends of the cord through the holes or lugs.
  • Put on the cover and secure it with the latches.
  • Screw the adapter back onto the gearbox shaft, also securing it with a screwdriver. You will need to twist the grass trimmer coil to the left (counter-clockwise).

Major coil malfunctions

Electric trimmer and lawn mower users often face a problem with a semi-automatic mowing head. Coil malfunctions can be as follows:

  • the line does not lengthen automatically;
  • the cord spontaneously comes out of the reel.

Line does not extend automatically

If the line does not lengthen when you lightly hit the grass trimmer button on the ground, the reasons may be as follows:.

Option 1. a bite has occurred, i.e. clamping the cord between turns. This problem usually appears if the user has been winding the line on the reel unevenly, with intersecting turns, or winding it with insufficient tension. In the latter case, when the mowing head rotates at high speeds under the influence of centrifugal force, the cord begins to tighten, as a result of which inter-turn clamping of the fishing line is possible. To fix the problem, you will have to disassemble the coil on the trimmer and rewind the cord correctly, that is, in even turns with good tension.

Option 2. too short ends protrude from the head. The line may not come out when hitting the ground if the ends sticking out of the head are not long enough (short). In this case, the centrifugal force is not enough to stretch the line. Therefore, it is required to stop the unit (turn off the engine or disconnect the electric grass trimmer from the mains) and pull the line manually, after pressing the button.

Option 3. the line is brazed inside the mowing head. This causes the coil to lock and not spin when the button is pressed. Basically, this happens for several reasons: poor cord quality, coil overheating during prolonged operation of the unit, line hitting hard objects.

  • In the first case, third-party cord can be made of low-quality and low-melting materials that cannot withstand mechanical and thermal stress. Therefore, you should give preference to “branded” lines.
  • But, if you nevertheless purchased a fishing line of unknown quality, and it is often soldered during operation, then you can follow the example of some users who, after filling the cord into the reel, wet it with either silicone grease (from a can) or mineral oil. This procedure greatly reduces the likelihood of soldering the turns of the fishing line together.
  • Also, the line can be soldered if it hits a hard object (stone, fence, dry branch, etc.) during mowing. As a result, it stretches slightly and is pulled back into the head at high speed. From friction, the cord heats up, and its turns stick together. The only thing that can be done to correct this problem is to open the reel of the grass trimmer and rewind the line.

Is it possible to make a coil for a grass trimmer with your own hands

  • Take a piece of plywood or PCB and draw a circle about 14 cm in diameter on it.
  • Cut the disc with a jigsaw or metal hacksaw.
  • Drill a hole in the center of the disc that matches the diameter of the gearbox shaft. Do not forget to put a washer on it before installing the disc on the shaft.
  • Small corners can be screwed on the edges of the disc or 1-2 holes can be made on opposite sides. They will serve for refueling the fishing line in them.
  • Several screws can be screwed into the plywood to fix the line.

This homemade mowing head is secured to the shaft with a nut. It will not work to tighten or unscrew the nut without fixing the shaft. To replace the cord, it will be enough to loosen the screws, insert a piece of line of the required length and press it again.

Also, the mowing attachment for attaching the fishing line to it can be made of metal sheet. How to do this can be understood from the following video.
