Why do you need a wire stripper?

In addition to the basic characteristics of professional tools, users estimate at what speed of work and its quality increases when using them.

Even if you change the wiring of a typical apartment, in each of the rooms (living room, kitchen, hallway, etc.) the wire is stripped.д.) there will be at least one light bulb, one switch, and several outlets, plus contacts in the input panel. To each of these points comes two or more wires, so their total number will be up to several hundred.

If you make a modern renovation in the room a large area, in which in addition to lighting and power wiring laid cable for the Internet, television, speakers, etc., the number of contacts for which you need to stripped wires, easily exceeds a thousand pieces.

It is often necessary to strip wires to a certain length, for example, this is required when installing some brand-name sockets. otherwise the wire will simply not fit in the socket designed for it. Most pliers have the ability to adjust the length of wire that needs to be stripped, but with a knife, you have to rely on eyeballing.

Even if you lightly snag a wire strand with the blade of the knife, the wire becomes more susceptible to kinks, and the scratched area can start to heat up. The insulation stripper, on the other hand, is made so as to cut the edge of the sheath without reaching the core.

Bottom line. most customers can be suspicious of an electrician that doesn’t have a wire stripper among his tools.

What any electrician should have for his professional activities? Of course, these are various tools for the job.

Even if an electrician will know all the theory of electricity to perfection, be able to draw up masterful schemes, for 5 seconds to understand why the socket is broken or why the light bulb is not lit, but without tools it anyway can not fix it all.

Jobs like stripping electrical wires, crimping sleeves to connect wires, measuring the voltage of an outlet. all require a good specialized tool.

Stripping wires is one of those procedures for which it is highly desirable to have this special tool. Of course, any normal craftsman should have it in stock.

Although even now, many novice electricians have to work in the old-fashioned way, using a knife or blade. But, unfortunately, this technology is long outdated and has its own drawbacks.

Wires are damaged, wires themselves are deformed if the knife is used inappropriately. In critical cases, when the cleaning of wires is done very badly, the phase and neutral conductors can come into contact, causing a short circuit.

It can lead to a serious accident, up to and including fire.

To avoid these unpleasant consequences. Engineers have come up with a special. Thanks to its use, we significantly increase the overall quality of work on electrical work in the apartment with our own hands.

Greatly increase their productivity, by reducing the time spent on stripping wires.

In this article I want to talk about the tool stripper for removing insulation.

I think it should be every person who periodically faces the need to strip wires with their own hands, about professional electricians do not even need to say. just masthave.

What kind of “beast” is this?? The stripper Gross 17718 is a professional tool, which is used to remove the insulation from the wire. When people ask me something like: “How do you strip cable??

I always answer. buy yourself a stripper and don’t bother. It will make your life a lot easier. With it, you can easily and simply do your job. In general, there are several kinds of strippers on the market now:

Automatic multifunctional stripper. Characterized by a large number of different functions in addition to the direct stripping of wires. For example, it can twist cores, peel them, trim them, and more in the process.

Semi-automatic stripper. It works in much the same way as an automatic one. After we put the cable on the stripper’s working area, we squeeze the handles and clamp wires between the working jaws.

The jaw on the left presses a part of the conductor, the jaws on the right notch the insulation and move it to the right. So we can remove the insulation from the wire very easily afterwards.

The stripper is designed with a special cut length limiter. With the help of which we can adjust and measure the length of the stripped wire section. By the way, many stores in the CIS in their product range call this device. wire stripping pliers

A simple stripper looks something like a common box cutter. It has special blades, which have a specific shape with small indentations. They are designed to remove insulation from electrical wires of various cross-sections.

In general, you should remember the tacit rule of electricians that an important part of the quality and safe electrical installation can be called the correct stripping of the insulation from the wire. Without any damage to the conductor strands!

In this article I want to talk about my experience with the insulation stripping tool from the German company Gross model 17718. I can safely call it one of my favorite tools in my professional activity as an electrician.

A tool for stripping. KVT stripper WS-04B

Electric tools should be an indispensable part of any electrician’s equipment. After all, you can’t perform such common electrical work as stripping wires, connecting switches and sockets, installation of junction boxes without electrical tools, even if you know all the theoretical foundations of this issue perfectly.

Stripping is performed every day on thousands of wires, usually with a professional tool. Often, however, many professionals in a hurry do this with a sharp blade. Stripping wires in this way has negative consequences for electrical connections: strands and insulation are damaged or the specified stripping length is not followed, so that connections do not meet the requirements for them.

Such mistakes are prevented by professional stripping tools. The procedures can be standardized, and the quality of the connections remains stable. One of these tools is such a device as a stripper. This tool is suitable for professional use and has an extremely long service life.

In the recent past, stripping wire insulation was done exclusively with a hand knife. But those days are over. today there is a wire stripping tool called a “stripper”. The model WS-04B from KVT is rightfully considered to be one of the most versatile, convenient and successful. Let’s have a closer look at the construction of this interesting tool and how it works.

By the way friends on the site I recently published an article about the review of Stok knife with a heel for cutting cables from the outer insulation. Please come in and take a look.

Choosing the stripping method for different wires

The amount of stripping effort depends greatly on the type of wire. When selecting a tool, the specifics of the cable should be considered:

  • Coaxial wire. Double stripping involves two steps. The top layer can be removed with a thermal cutter and the bottom layer with a stripper. The strands of this cable are very fragile and thin, so they are easy to damage.
  • PTFE-coated cable. Heat-resistant insulation that can only be removed mechanically. An electrician’s knife or wire stripper will work.
  • Enameled wire. If it is under 0.2 kV. mm, you must resort to the thermo-chemical method using a soldering iron and chlorvinyl tape. The wire is placed on the tape, run the soldering iron over the cable. the chlorine released helps “peel off” the enameled sheath from the wire.

When choosing a tool, you must consider the diameter of the wire for which the device is designed, as well as the material of the handle.

If it is necessary to wire electric cables, it is necessary to choose strippers with handles made of dielectric material.

Coating protects against voltages within 1000 W.

Electrical cables provide the transmission of electrical energy. Its conductor cross-section conforms to certain standards, prescribed in the relevant GOSTs. They define the permissible thermal load on the insulation during the current flow. Accordingly, a violation of the balance prescribed in the standards leads to the creation of emergency situations.

If the wire cross-section thickness becomes less than the nominal, it will no longer meet the stated current loads indicated in the performance characteristics. Not to mention the loss of mechanical properties (which is especially typical for aluminum conductors).

How much the cross-sectional area affects the resistance of the wire and thus the current load is described by Ohm’s law. Let’s look at what happens in a conductor when its cross section geometry is broken.

The effect of the cross section of the wire on its resistance is described by the formula: R=(ρl)/S

S” represents the cross-sectional area of the wire, “l” its length, “ρ” the resistivity constant.

Now let’s see what happens in the core if its geometry is broken as a result of stripping the insulation with improvised means.

Conductor with a broken cross-section

As can be seen from the figure, the cross-sectional area S1 in the place of damage is less than the original S2, respectively, at this point the resistance increases, which threatens a violation of the thermal balance. Not to mention the weakened mechanical strength (if the damage is done to the aluminum wire).

Such damage to the wire is typical if a knife, wire cutter or pliers are used to strip the insulation. To avoid this, it is sufficient to use special tools to remove the electrical insulation layer. Let’s start by looking at methods of how this can be done.

Wire stripper tools. Types of. How to choose and use

An electrician’s work often involves the use of different tools. To perform a routine operation in the form of cutting wire and other electrical devices, you need wire stripping tools. The most convenient tool are special pullers and strippers.

But if you need to strip two or three cables, you can also use a simple kitchen knife. If you plan to work on laying electrical wiring in a house or apartment, then for such a task an ordinary knife will not be enough. The kitchen knife has an uncomfortable blade, and the handle may not be made of dielectric material.

Popular tools for stripping:

  • mechanical stripper;
  • pliers;
  • knife;
  • pliers for circular cross-section conductors;
  • Pliers;
  • sheath cutter.

Mechanical stripper

This is a wire stripper for stripping wire ends. Consists of pliers and press jaws for crimping and crimping the ends. To remove the braid, the wire is clamped into a hole of the desired diameter, using circular motions, remove the insulation coating. This is a simple, cheap tool. Short life, suitable for light-duty applications. Press pliers have 6-7 apertures, which allows working with elements of different diameters.

Pliers for stripping

Pliers (pliers). universal tool for stripping insulation and other operations performed in electrical work. 6 different opening sizes available in the front, range of cross-sections from 0.5 to 3 mm. The second half has a long zigzag connector that is used to crimp ends, bend wire, and cut thin soft wires. It is a convenient, inexpensive wire stripper.

Pliers for stripping

The device is equipped with handles, which are covered with a dielectric shell, an adjusting screw that allows you to change the diameter of the hole. To remove the sheath, the cable is lightly bitten, the tool is turned, and the sheath is pulled through. Do not squeeze and deform the wires when inserted into the opening of the pliers. This will scratch the steel conductor strands.

The pliers are not comfortable to work with for a long time, but they are good for home work. They are used for different cable cross sections. Device is used in places where access is difficult. The handles of the pliers have a dielectric coating to protect against electric shock.

Pliers for stripping insulation off circular wire

This is a round split handle. It is opened, the conductor is inserted, clamped and twisted. The cutting edge makes a circular cut, the sheath is removed as it is pulled through. The tool is designed for circular cables with large cross-sections.

Sheath remover

This knife has a retractable blade and a metal clamp that holds the cable against the cutting part. A pivoting mechanism allows the sheath to be cut along its length and circumferentially. Blade extends to braid thickness to prevent damage to the wire itself.

Insulation removal blade

This is a wire stripper. The blade is bent in the shape of a hook. The braiding is removed by pulling the blade away from you at an acute angle to prevent damage to the steel strands of the wire. Heel on end of hook limits depth of cut. It controls the depth of cut by removing the top shell. Not suitable for thick coatings.
