How to sharpen a chainsaw chain with a file

How to sharpen a chainsaw chain at home. what you need?

Chainsaws are actively used by many summer residents and owners of country houses. This tool is indispensable for harvesting firewood and other gardening work. Its effective use is possible provided that the saw chain remains sharp at all times. Let’s see how you can sharpen it yourself if necessary.

  • 1 When sharpening is needed. signs of a dull saw
  • 2 Tooth characteristics. what you need to know?
  • 3 Set of files. we will make any saw sharp
  • 4 Sharpening machine. if the file fails

A sharp chain saw is a prerequisite for the safe and productive use of the tool of interest. A special machine allows you to sharpen it. But not every home master has it. Therefore, most summer residents use a file for sharpening. Such work is rather complicated, due to the special geometry of the saw teeth, which have two cutting edges. the upper and the side. over, the first of them has a well-defined bevel.

sharpen, chainsaw, chain, file

With active use of the tool, the chain very quickly loses its sharpness. This significantly complicates the process of using the saw and leads to unpleasant results:

  • the tire and the drive sprocket of the cutting device may well collapse, which will require their replacement or expensive repair;
  • a chainsaw consumes a lot of fuel;
  • the tool has a high cyclic load;
  • cutting wood becomes of poor quality and requires additional efforts;
  • the useful life of the device is reduced due to the wear of its mechanisms and components.

Of course, one cannot put up with this. The sooner we put in order a dull chain, the faster and better we will be able to carry out all the planned work with a saw. Sharpening of the described tool should be carried out without delay in the following cases:

  • 1. If we feel that the saw starts to cut badly in the wood (it takes a lot of effort in order to cut the latter). A normally sharpened device retracts into the cut without pressing hard.
  • 2. When the chips flying out from under the saw have changed their color. In particular. it became darker.
  • 3. If, instead of thick and coarse chips, exceptionally thin and fine chips began to flow from the cut.

In addition, the bluntness of the instrument is not difficult to see with the naked eye. And craftsmen who use the saw often enough, and without additional inspection, feel great when it needs another sharpening. As soon as we notice that the productivity of the work decreases, and the use of the tool becomes difficult, this is a clear sign of its bluntness.

The cutting link of the gas-powered device we are considering constructively includes: a base, a blade, a special limiter.

The first blade (end) is present on the scapula of the tooth. It is positioned vertically. There is another blade above it (horizontally). In order for the saw to function truly efficiently, we need to give both cutting elements a certain angle. Let’s briefly describe them:

  • 1. Corner (rear) of the upper blade. It is formed by the back of the tooth. It allows the chainsaw to cut into the material being processed.
  • 2. Angle of the end blade. It is formed by a shoulder blade narrowed back. It makes it possible to trim chips on the sides.
  • 3. Front corner. It is formed by the sliding surface of the blade and its edge.

The sharpening angle is allowed to be selected individually, focusing on what kind of work is planned to be performed with the saw. There are two nuances to consider here. First, reducing the angle of sharpening when machining hardwood reduces tool vibration. This ensures the smooth running of the latter. Second. when cutting soft trees, increasing the sharpening angle increases the saw performance.

The minimum recommended sharpening angle is 25 °, the maximum is 35 °.

There is a depth stop on each individual link. It is located in front of the scapula. The size of the stop is the distance between its edge and the cutting back of the tine. It determines the productivity of the cutting process, as it sets the depth of immersion of the saw into the wood. In most cases, the distance of the limiter is taken in the range of 0.5-0.8 mm.

It is easiest to sharpen the chain of a modern chainsaw at home using a specially set of tools. It is recommended to purchase a standard set of accessories for performing such work, which includes:

  • 1. Round file. With its help, we will begin to sharpen the cutting tooth of the saw.
  • 2. Flat file. It serves to grind off the depth gauge.
  • 3. Special template. It is required to check the turning and dressing parameters.
  • 4. A special hook that allows you to clean the chainsaw from sawdust.

The round file is equipped with a holder with round markings on the mowing line. They make it possible to position the sharpening tool as correctly as possible in relation to the chain being processed. The holder is mounted on the indicated lines on the saw tooth. In this case, the file itself is under the cutting edge. An important point! We select the files, taking into account the type of chain of our saw. There are many options. Flat files are available in widths from 4 to 12 mm. And the diameter of round fixtures varies from 3 to 6 mm.

When sharpening 1/5 of the file must protrude above the cutting edge. This is a prerequisite. In the process of performing work, we move the file strictly in one direction, and not back and forth. In addition, we slightly sharpen the limiter every few sharpenings. In general, the scheme for restoring the sharpness of the chainsaw teeth looks quite simple:

  • 1. Clamp the saw between the knees. Putting on the chain brake.
  • 2. We expose the template included in the kit. Its directional arrows should point towards the front of the tire.
  • 3. Mark the first sharpened tooth with chalk.
  • 4. Move (away from you) the round file, sharpening.
  • 5. Take a flat sharpening tool. We remove the control tooth with it. In this case, you can move the file in any direction.
  • 6. We process the rest of the teeth in the same way.

As you can see, the process is simple. Although at first it causes difficulties for many home craftsmen. Nothing wrong. Mastery comes with experience. We make smooth, unhurried and measured movements. From time to time we turn the file used for sharpening chainsaw chains in order to prevent its wear on one side.

Nuance. When sharpening, we count the number of file movements along individual teeth. It should be the same for all elements. This gives us a chain with equal tooth length. If their sizes turn out to be different, the chainsaw will go unevenly, which is guaranteed to lead to the appearance of chips and cracks in it.

Some chains cannot be filed with a file. Similar situations occur when the saw was not monitored, the sharpness of its teeth was not restored for a long time, or it was used extremely carelessly. In such cases, there is only one way out. the use of special machines. They are manual and electric. The machines have a working part, which is visually similar to a bow saw, in which a long round file performs the function of a sharpening surface.

Power generating units have become widespread. They can be adjusted to any sharpening angle. Many of them perform the clamping of the vice and other operations in automatic mode. The main advantage of such devices is the high accuracy of work performance. The algorithm for sharpening chains on them is as follows:

  • 1. Adjust the chain clamp. The operation is carried out by means of a screw or other device on the unit.
  • 2. We put the chain in the groove of the machine. Saw links should be facing the file.
  • 3. Set the required angle of processing.
  • 4. We choose the polarity, focusing on the option of sharpening the cutter (right- or left-handed).
  • 5. Turn on the machine. We sharpen every second tooth (if we do not want to constantly change the polarity) or everything in a row (then after each tooth we will have to set a new polarity).

After sharpening, experts advise to blow the chain with a jet of compressed air, and then place it in machine oil for 20-30 minutes.

How to properly sharpen a chainsaw chain with a file

Templates and patterns must be fixed on the area to be treated. They will give the right direction to the file, making the process easier. When all the preparatory work has been done, you can proceed directly to sharpening the chain.

According to the rules, it is necessary to sharpen the teeth in one direction, then in the other. Work begins with light clicks with a file in the direction away from you, the pressure gradually increases. Reverse file movement. without pressing. The circular tool must be continuously rotated along its axis. The chain is sharpened by movements from the inside of the tooth to the outside. In this case, the file must be located parallel to a special mark on the chain, which is applied by the manufacturer to indicate the standard sharpening angle.

The sharpened tooth should be located approximately in the middle of the tire, this is necessary for ease of work. In the process of processing, you need to move the chain along the tire, not forgetting to set the brake to the working position every time.

The angle of inclination of the tool should be right, and the angle of sharpening of the chain of the chainsaw horizontally. sharp, while its changes are allowed in the range from 10º to 30º. The smallest tooth in the row should be taken as a basis. Turn the tire over and do the same job for the teeth that go in the opposite direction. The disadvantage of this sharpening method is the large time consumption.

It is much easier to work with greater confidence to get the right result, in the event that the master has provided himself with a set of accessories, which includes a template. It maintains the correct values for all sharpening angles of the tooth. The angle of the leading edge is recorded in the instructions, usually 65º. 80º. The value of the clearance angle of the upper blade can only be estimated from the template. Its value should be in the range from 50º to 60º.

The clearance angle of the saw decreases with increasing wood hardness. The optimal value for longitudinal cutting is considered to be the value of the angle 10º… 12º, and 25º… 30º. for cross cutting.

Electric chainsaw chain sharpener

The main part of the machine is an electric motor, on the shaft of which a sharpening disc is installed. The controls are located on its handle. There is a clamp for securing the machine to the chain. The spring clamp provides adjustment of the pressing force on the sharpened element. Differentiated clamping provides for the self-centering of the product in the machine. For the safety of work, there is a hinged safety guard.

A saw chain is installed in a special guide mounted on a turntable. The retainer holds the tooth to be sharpened, to which an electric emery is installed at a predetermined angle. The operator turns on the engine and controls the immersion of the disc

How to sharpen a chainsaw chain: methods, tools and accessories

A good master must have a good tool and always be on alert. This applies to any skilled person. All cutting and sawing devices must always be properly sharpened. This requirement is also relevant to such complex tools as saws, especially electric and gasoline. In today’s review, we will figure out how to sharpen a chainsaw chain, what you need to know for this in order to do the job efficiently.

Tooth configuration and sharpening angle of the chainsaw chain

The chainsaw tooth has a complex configuration, which depends on the direction of movement of the chain. The tooth has two working edges: the lateral one, located perpendicular to the axis of movement of the links, and the upper one, which is at a certain angle to the direction of movement of the chain. Each tooth has a cutting depth stop. It determines the height of the chips to be removed. The main cutting force falls on the cutting edge. The sharpening angle of the tooth determines the quality of the tool.

Important! The configuration of the tooth should be checked regularly, especially before starting long-term work.

Each saw model has its own cutting edge pitch, the value of which for household and semi-professional models is associated with the power of the unit and the drive torque. For rip sawing, the pitch is taken less (eg 0.325 inch). In this case, the work performance will decrease, but the required effort will also decrease. When felling trees with a large trunk diameter, the engine power does not exceed 2500 W. The thickness of the cutting edge for most chainsaws is set to 1.3 mm.

The height of the chain profile is either 0.625 mm or 0.762 mm, and a low profile is used for household saws. At the same time, the vibration of the saw increases slightly.

The edge of the tooth for longitudinal cutting should be very sharp and have an angle in the range of 6º… 12º, for transverse. up to 25º… 30º.

In the first case, sharpening should be done more often, since an unacceptably small angle of inclination of the tooth contributes to its rapid chipping. This is especially noticeable in links that are made of structural alloy steels containing silicon and manganese, for example, 40KhGS or 35KhGSA.

How to sharpen a chainsaw chain at home with a file

A tool with an exceptionally round section will help to properly sharpen the chainsaw chain with a file. File parameters are determined by the dimensions of the saw itself. It is important to know the pitch of the teeth. One round sharpener is not enough. For sharpening and dressing chains, two types of tools are used. The first is a file with a circular cross-section with a diameter corresponding to the diameter of the rounding of the working edge of the saw tooth. A flat file is required to cut the depth gauge on the guide tooth.

Sharpening can be done manually using a round file with a working diameter of 4. 5.5 mm. It is imperative that the tool is correctly positioned in relation to the tooth being sharpened. The upper edge of the working part of the file is approximately one fifth higher than the upper edge of the workpiece. The tool is held perpendicular to the chain axis at an angle of 25º… 30º to the upper edge of the tooth.

For sharpening saw chains of household tools, round files with a diameter of 4 and 4.8 mm are used, since they have a small tooth. For professional models, use more powerful chains with a larger tooth. Therefore, files with a diameter of 5.2 and 5.5 mm are needed.

You will need a flat file to sharpen the limiter, and a hook that removes the resulting sawdust to clean the work area. There are also commercially available special holders on which the mowing line is graduated with the direction of movement of the file relative to the axis of the chain. The holder can be mounted on top of the tooth, resting on its upper edge. Since its height is adapted to a certain chain pitch, this device should be selected in relation to chainsaws of specific models and brands. The minimum required set in order to obtain the correct angle of sharpening the chain by hand is shown in the photo.

How To Sharpen A Chainsaw Chain With Just A File

Manual sharpening saves material resources, allows you to work in the field. First, place the instrument on a level surface. If the work is done in the forest, trimming a large diameter log is a good choice. Next, you need to inspect the saw chain for any defects, it can be cracks, completely broken off teeth. After inspection, you need to set the brake in working condition, thereby blocking the movement along the chain bar, which must be tightened during sharpening with a file.

How to sharpen a chainsaw chain on a machine

Sharpening a chain on a machine is much faster and more accurate than with your hands. There are many different electric sharpeners on the market. Household units are compact, operate on a 220 V network. Abrasive wheels are easily replaced on them, they can be easily rebuilt to different chain parameters: tooth pitch, upper edge thickness, sharpening angle. All machined cutting edges are the same. The process is going fast.

A file for sharpening chainsaws: types and tips for choosing

The diameter of the round file is selected according to the pitch of the saw chain. The pitch values of 1.3 and 1.6 mm correspond to files with a diameter of 4 and 5.2 mm. A flat tool will be required to reduce the height of the stops of the cutting links.

Stages of work for manual sharpening at home

  • The bar with the chain is fixed with a vise so that its upper line is in a horizontal position.
  • Take the shortest tooth as a reference point and mark it with a marker or nitro enamel.
  • The body of the round file is brought under the main cutting edge, pressing it to the corner along the entire mowing line and at the same time pressing the holder against the surface of the tooth. Thanks to the holder, the round file will automatically take the desired position, protruding in relation to the upper plane of the chainsaw tooth.
  • With confident even movements from oneself, without changing the feed angle, two or three times are filed along the beveled surface of the upper cutting edge.
  • Rotate the file along its axis so that the development of the abrasive surface does not occur, and repeat the operation until the tooth sharpens.
  • After that, using a chain sharpening template, check the height of the limiter and, if necessary, grind it with a flat file.
  • Then, after one tooth, the entire cycle of operations is repeated until they reach the originally marked tooth.
  • Turn the tire over with the opposite side and sharpen all the other teeth of the chainsaw through one.

3 ways to sharpen your chainsaw chain with your own hands

Learn how to properly sharpen your chainsaw chain at home using a file, angle grinder and machine. A detailed video of the do-it-yourself sharpening process. We will show you how to work correctly with tools and devices.

It is very convenient to work with a chainsaw. Despite the fact that the unit weighs 5-7 kilograms, or even more, cutting a tree trunk into logs, you simply wonder how quickly this happens, and there is practically no fatigue. But then the moment comes when it is harder and harder for the tool blade to enter the wood. There is only one diagnosis. the saw is dull, so it is required to sharpen the chainsaw chain.

Whoever comes across this for the first time is a little upset, because it is not clear: to do it yourself or to give the instrument to the specialists in the workshop. And what is the general sharpening method? But in fact, there is nothing wrong with this, and if you have knowledge, you can easily sharpen chainsaw chains with your own hands. The correct strategy for resolving the issue in this case directly depends on the load of the unit.

If the chainsaw is used from time to time, several times a year, then it may not make sense to buy a special sharpening machine or accessories, it is easier to solve the problem by using the services of a service center. But if a chainsaw is a means of earning or there is a desire to master the sharpening process yourself, then you should definitely purchase a sharpener or a machine and manually carry out this simple manipulation with the chain. Let’s see below what the correct sharpening of the chainsaw chain is based on.

Than manual sharpening is inferior to machine

  • Difficulty keeping the required angle. You don’t need to think that you can sharpen the chainsaw chain with just one round file, for this operation you will need at least a special guide and a second flat file.
  • Low speed of the operation. It is necessary to fix the guide on the tooth, manipulate with a round file, check the gap of the limiter, if it is necessary to correct it with a flat file, and only then proceed to the next tooth.
  • The need for experience. Despite the various helpers for sharpening a chainsaw by hand, first of all you need to feel the process, and this requires some experience.

Hand-operated machines

The design of such a machine is similar to a bow saw. Only where the saw blade is located is the round file. With such a machine, you can sharpen and straighten the teeth, adjusting the proportionality of the upper edges to the smallest (control) size. The mechanism allows you to accurately set the parameters. After adjusting the “control” tooth, sharpening is carried out in two or three movements. And then the transition. to the next tooth.

When it is necessary to grind off the stopper, we change the round file to a flat file.

Advantages of the method: Allows you to sharpen teeth, including those that have lost their original shape, in a high-quality, convenient and without large physical costs.

Disadvantages: The price of the tool and the distance from the possible site of the saw operation.

“After finishing the“ sharpening procedures ”, blow the chain with compressed air (from a compressor or pump) and put it briefly in clean engine oil. Of course, almost no one does such events, but for the chain, they will only benefit. “

What to choose for sharpening is up to you. This is due to how often you use your chainsaw. From the accuracy of handling it. From the quality of the purchased chain. And, of course, from the opportunity to spend a certain amount. It is impossible to compare the methods, because as the German proverb says. “apples should be compared with apples”.

File types and tips for choosing

Following the rules, before choosing files for sharpening the chainsaw chain, the exact chain pitch is determined by the chain marking. Further, they adhere to the recommendations:

Step size File diameter, mm
0.25 2×2
0.325 2×2.4
0.375 2×2.6
0.404 2×2.75

There are saw chains where it is appropriate to use round files with a cross-sectional diameter of 2×1.6 millimeters.

With the correct selection of the tool for sharpening the teeth of the chainsaw, its protrusion above the surface of the horizontal edge of the tooth during the process will not exceed 1/5 of its own diameter, which can be a guideline when selecting a file when the chain pitch cannot be determined.

We work with a file

The best solution is simple gadgets for sharpening work. This set includes a round and flat file, special holders, a gauge template, a hook for removing chips, etc. Structurally, “adaptations” may differ, but the functionality has a common logic.

The diameter of a round file is directly related to the size of the chain:

  • – Chains with ø 1.3. require a file of ø 4 mm (used much more often);
  • – Chains with ø 1.6. require a file ø 5.2 mm;
  • – To sharpen the depth gauge, use a flat file.

Sharpening process

  • Having previously “turned on” the chain brake, firmly grip the tire of the chainsaw in a vice (a firmly clamped saw is the key to successful sharpening)
  • Set the template so that the arrow points towards the nose of the tire. Be sure to mark (with chalk) the tooth from which you started sharpening, otherwise you can go along the second circle;
  • Sharpen in the direction of the arrows. Remember, there is a special factory cut on each tooth in the chain. It indicates the maximum sharpening angle.
  • In addition to the cutting tooth, there are stops on each link. They are sharpened as needed. This is necessary when, as a result of sharpening, the height of the tooth decreases, and problems arise in the operation of the chainsaw. As a rule, the limiter is sharpened after 2-3 sharpening of the teeth;

“If you don’t have the skills to sharpen, it’s better to start with inexpensive chains.”.

Recommendations:

  • The file should not go beyond the upper part of the cutting edge by more than 1/5 of the working part of the file. The pressure is carried out with the same effort;
  • The movement of the grinding tool is performed in one direction “away from you”, and the number of movements for each tooth must be equal;
  • To sharpen a vertical plane, the position of the file must be at right angles;
  • For sharpening the horizontal plane, file position, at an angle of 20-30 °
  • If there are teeth of different heights, the reference is the smallest.

Advantages: Ability to “charge the saw” in the field. At the same time it’s cheap.

Electric sharpening machines

They are equipped with special adjustment functions to help you position the chain at a certain angle. At the same time, it is possible to accurately and accurately bring the disc to the chain teeth. There are machines equipped with automatic vices. They are switched on when the disc approaches the edge to be sharpened. Convenience and functionality are of course high. You can find models at “lifting” prices.

How to sharpen a chainsaw chain with a file

Chainsaw chain sharpener

The fact is that the chain tooth of a chainsaw has a rather complex geometry. 2 cutting edges. top and side, of which the first is chamfered to the mowing line of movement at a certain angle, make this procedure not too easy. The tools we need are as follows: a round file, a flat file, a special template and a hook that will help us clean the sawdust off the saw. In some cases, you have to resort to a special machine for sharpening a chainsaw. Well, now let’s move on to the description of the traditional sharpening of a chainsaw with a file.

How to sharpen a chainsaw chain correctly on a machine

If, during operation, the chain has plowed sandy or even gravel soil, or has not been sharpened for a very long time, it will be very difficult to sharpen it with a file, since this will require considerable effort and time from you. In this case, a machine for sharpening chainsaws will help us. Such machines are divided into manual and electric, which are equipped with grinding wheels. The working part of the machine is somewhat reminiscent of a bow saw, except that instead of a blade, a long round file is inserted. The machine can not only sharpen the chain, but adjust the length of the teeth to a single size according to the control, as a rule, the smallest tooth. The mechanism for adjusting the sharpening machines usually allows you to set the required parameters. The sharpening itself is performed with just two or three movements, after which you can proceed to the next tooth, while maintaining all the settings made for the control tooth. And one more thing: if possible, it is best to use an electric machine for sharpening chainsaws, as it is simple and very convenient to use. The electric machine has a setting system that allows you to set the chain at the desired angle, as well as bring the disc to the sharpened edge very accurately. There are also machines that automatically clamp the vice when the disc is lowered onto the chain. Well, for clarity, we have prepared a video for you, on which the sharpening of the chainsaw chain is considered in great detail. It’s always better to see once.

HOW TO SHARPEN A CHAINSAW WITH AND WITHOUT A FILE GUIDE, ADJUST DEPTH ADJUSTERS

How to sharpen a chainsaw chain?

In this article, we will deal with how to sharpen a chainsaw chain. It must be said that sharpening chainsaw chains is perhaps a little more difficult than any other cutting tool. In addition, high-quality sharpening is possible only if you have special tools for sharpening. Let’s start with them, and then consider also automated chainsaw sharpening systems.

And how to properly sharpen a chainsaw chain?

If in the process of work, non-uniform chips have gone. a large amount of dust and sawdust have a needle-like shape. this is a sure sign that the chain needs to be sharpened. Do-it-yourself chainsaw sharpening.

The cutting link is a rather complex part of the saw chain.

The saw chain has two parts:

cutting depth gauge

cutting element with a contour cutting angle L-shaped.

The following factors affect the performance of the cutting link:

top edge sharpening angle

cutting angle

side face angle

depth limiter height.

In the process of sharpening the chain, all of the above factors must be taken into account. A small deviation can cause unnecessary hassle.

What tools are needed in order to assemble a tool for sharpening chainsaw chains with your own hands?

Everything is very simple :

round file

flat file

combined template (available in construction hypermarkets)

vise (preferably)

Voila. We have almost ready a device for sharpening chainsaws.

How to sharpen a chainsaw chain? It’s very simple, first we clamp the saw in a vice. We start sharpening with the cutting teeth. Next, it is worth putting a sharpening template on the chain. There are arrows on the template, they should point in the direction of rotation of the chain. Sharpen with smooth movements, forward movement should be at an angle to the awl of the chainsaw. We choose the angle of inclination depending on the pitch of the chain. Each tooth must be sharpened the same way. That is, the number of movements should be approximately comparable. You need to sharpen one by one, one tooth on the right and one on the left.

Important: after you clamp the tire in a vice, it is easier to first sharpen every second tooth on one side and after every second tooth on the back side.

Place the template for the stop tooth and file (flat) the stop tooth to the level of the template. The template has several provisions, namely two:

H- “hard”. for hard wood species (oak type)

S. “soft”. for softer breeds.

Important: the stop tooth cannot be sharpened without a template, this will lead to that. cut too deep, the chain will cut too thick a layer of wood. In turn, this will increase recoil, reduce the accuracy and accuracy of cutting.

The teeth of the chain must be sharpened the same (in length). The reference point for this is the length of the tooth itself, which is blunt. You need to measure the length of the blunt prong visor. The angle between the blade and the sidewall should not be changed. By all standards, the angle should be 90 degrees.

When sharpening a tooth, its hole expands from the inside, you need to make sure that the base is horizontal.

The file must be selected individually for each chain, for example, low-profile chains are sharpened with a 4 mm file.

If for some reason you do not want to sharpen yourself, there are devices and special tools on sale. to properly sharpen the chainsaw chain yourself with a minimum of time.

For example sharpening machines. which are attached to the bus:

Or an electric machine:
