How to prune a raspberry tree in spring

How to properly prune a raspberry tree?

Olga, Raspberry tree refers to some varieties of summer raspberries, which, as a result of selection, acquired powerful erect shoots resembling a tree trunk. The breeders themselves call this raspberry standard. The first Russian standard variety was Tarusa. Then other similar varieties appeared. The main distinguishing feature of such varieties is the crown and shoots resembling a tree. They are strong, thick, resilient and almost perfectly upright, often completely devoid of thorns. This is where the resemblance to a tree ends. the shoots are small in height, grow to an average of 1.5-1.7 meters. This gives the plant a slenderness, its appearance can be called decorative. but in fact, these varieties of raspberries are not any tree.

Despite the impressive strength of the shoots, under a large harvest, they still tilt to the ground, and sharp gusts of wind can completely deform and even break. Therefore, experienced gardeners still recommend using trellises or other supports to obtain maximum yield.
This bush shape and, as a rule, large berries and their good transportability contribute to the high market demand for these varieties. Raspberries of this type are usually shaped in a special way. in the fall, when the two-year-old shoots have already borne fruit, the one-year shoots are shortened, i.e. cut at a height of 1.3-1.4 meters and in this form they are already going into winter. Due to this, lateral branches will begin to form immediately next year, i.e. the so-called crown of a tree, and a new crop is formed on them. Otherwise, plant care is the same as for other varieties of summer raspberries. Two-year-old shoots that have borne fruit are cut out in the spring, like in ordinary raspberries. In other words, it bears fruit on the branches of the previous year, and to create more branches they are simply shortened at a certain height around August. It is not difficult to propagate such varieties, the plants usually give an average number of replacement shoots that take root well.

Double pruning raspberries
In recent years, many amateur gardeners have managed to increase the harvest of raspberries in their garden plots by 2-2.5 times due to a change in the technology of its cultivation, which mainly consists in pruning the bushes twice a day.
I do the first pruning of young raspberry shoots in June, regardless of the specific date, when they reach a height of 0.8-1.0 m. At the same time, I cut out only the top with a length of 10-12 cm.After pruning, 3-5 lateral branches with a length of 35-50 cm grow on these shoots by the fall.In this form, I bend the raspberries, and it leaves before winter.
After spring awakening, I raise raspberries, and immediately carry out the second cut. At the same time, I cut off all lateral shoots, shortening them by 10-12 cm. This pruning is the main one, and after it, new fruiting shoots are formed both on the central stem and on the side shoots. Each side shoot grows 3-5 branches. Thus, the raspberry shoot turns into a bush with 12-16 branches, which, during flowering, is completely covered with flowers. Flowering branches appear along the entire length of the central stem. Thanks to this, the second, pruning, the terms of fruiting are also greatly stretched. With this pruning, it is very important that no thickening occurs. Raspberry planted in two rows with a row spacing of 2 m, and in a row for 1 running m I leave only four to five escapes, no more. Otherwise, the raspberry tree thickens due to strong branching. In the fall, from young shoots, I leave such an amount that is needed to replace the fertile ones and another 2-3 pcs., In case of damage during overwintering, all the rest I regularly cut out during the summer. Regular pruning of unnecessary young shoots during the summer is also important: they consume a lot of nutrients for their growth from the mother plant, to the detriment of the harvest.
With this cultivation technology, the raspberry shoot is completely unable to keep the large harvest formed, therefore, I must arrange wire trellises on both sides of the row at a height of 1.2 and 1.5 m.

How to care for and plant a raspberry tree

Today we will talk about a very unusual type of raspberry, you probably are all already accustomed to the traditional look, raspberry bushes, they are usually undersized, and with relatively small shoots, but there is a standard raspberry. It is not that popular, and it is widespread, and completely in vain. Raspberry tree planting and care, photo, reproduction, this wonderful plant is the topic of our article, we are sure you will like it, because the standard raspberry has very good and rich yields, and caring for it is not difficult, see for yourself, try to grow such a tree at home on the site, with the help of our advice.

How to plant a raspberry tree, basic rules:

It is important to note that standard raspberries, without proper care and proper pruning, will look almost the same as regular raspberries, only with thick trunks. Therefore, gardeners form a crown on their own, if you come across information somewhere that your seedling will grow by itself and take the shape of a real tree. you know, you are being deceived.

After you have chosen a healthy, young seedling, you should start planting. To do this, you need to choose a suitable place, it is best suited, a light open area, away from vegetable crops, since they often have the same pests and diseases with a raspberry tree.

The planting time of a raspberry tree is the same as that of an ordinary raspberry: spring or autumn. If you decide to plant in the spring, then it is best to do this at the very beginning, immediately after the snow melts, and when the soil thaws a little. Autumn planting of standard raspberries is carried out in September. Immediately after planting, the seedlings are spud, about 14 centimeters, this procedure will protect the plant from frost.

Raspberry tree planting scheme:

  • Bush method. with this approach, a separate hole is dug under each bush, and fertilization is not applied.
  • The belt method is a planting method suitable for a larger country house. You need to dig a long trench and every 50 centimeters we plant a bush of a raspberry tree, the process goes, immediately after you dug a trench, you can apply fertilizer into it.

For better rooting, raspberries are dipped in a mullein before planting, or rather not all raspberries, but only their rhizomes. Humus, ash and complex fertilizers are poured into the pits themselves.

Bad predecessors for such a plant. how raspberries are considered: potatoes and tomatoes. But after the legumes, the raspberry tree, the planting and care of which after these crops is greatly simplified, and they are considered good predecessors.

Reproduction of the raspberry tree:

Shoot propagation is the simplest and most effective method of breeding standard raspberries. Since there are a lot of such growths and it takes root well in a new place. Any outgrowth that has grown by more than 25 centimeters can be planted immediately. Inspect the seedling itself before planting, for the presence of various diseases and pests, it is also recommended to rinse it in a solution of potassium permanganate. Seedlings are best dug up and replanted in spring.

Diseases and pests of the raspberry tree.

  • The crimson beetle is one of the main enemies that lives underground and destroys the aboveground part of the plant, leaves and inflorescences, and the larvae of this beetle threaten the drupes themselves. They fight it by loosening the soil, during which they pay attention to the soil, these insects can often be seen in it. Also, the plant is treated with karbofos.
  • Moth. most often the moth lives on the old shoots of the plant, for this reason, they are removed. Also, for the purpose of prevention, the raspberry tree is sprayed with special preparations, even before the appearance of the kidneys.
  • The weevil is a very dangerous enemy, it gnaws the stalks, and lays its eggs in the buds themselves, the offspring completes what they started, as a rule, if nothing is done, the harvest will die. One of the methods of prevention is the choice of a place, since the close proximity to strawberries will almost certainly attract weevils to raspberries. Also, in early spring, pest control is carried out.
  • Raspberry fly. in early May, these flies lay eggs in raspberry shoots, after the offspring is born, it begins to destroy the leaves. For prevention, it is recommended to constantly dig up the soil, because flies live there. Also, pest control in early spring will help preserve the harvest.

Most often, raspberries are susceptible to various types of spots, gray rot, leaf rust, anthraconse. Fight these ailments with Bordeaux fluid and Hom.

Raspberry tree: planting and care, growing, pruning for the winter

Raspberries are a popular berry, the benefits of which do not have to be talked about. Every gardener wants the bushes to yield significant yields and do not require laborious maintenance. It takes a lot of time to tie plants to the trellis. its shoots are too flexible and prickly. Another thing is the standard variety, popularly called the raspberry tree.

Types and varieties

Raspberries, growing in the form of a full-fledged tree, do not yet exist in nature, just as there is no curly strawberry. Thanks to the selection, Professor V.V. managed to create a variety with a very strong stem, and even a tree from it creates a gardener with the correct formation. The varieties known as crimson trees are more correctly called standard trees. Simultaneously with Kichina, Professor Kazakov also worked on the development of standard varieties. He managed to get standard remontant varieties.

  • Tarusa. This is the first standard variety bred by Viktor Valerianovich Kichina. Low shoots. up to 1.5 m.Fruiting in the middle late.
  • Advantages: large. up to 16 g of berries, high. up to 4 kg per bush yield, no thorns, strong stem.
  • Disadvantages: sour taste of berries, insufficient frost resistance. up to 30 degrees. The sprouting ability of the Tarusa raspberry tree is weak. there are enough shoots to replace the fruiting trunks, there may be problems with reproduction.
  • Strong guy. The variety has tastier berries than Tarusa. But their value is less. up to 8 g, respectively, slightly less and yield. up to 3.5 kg per bush. The frost resistance of the variety is at the level of Tarusa. But the sprouting ability is much greater, it is easy to propagate this variety. Bears fruit in the mid-term. The berries ripen unevenly and must be harvested frequently. Well transported.
  • Story. Ripening period. medium, extended fruiting. The shoots are high. up to 2.5 m. The berries are not inferior in size to Tarusa. up to 15 g, but the yield is much higher. up to 10 kg per bush. Good taste with high sugar content. The weak point is low frost resistance. 25 degrees is the limit for it, and bending down the standard variety for wintering under shelter is a thankless task.
  • Eurasia is the first grade of standard raspberry with remontant fruiting. The height of the shoots is 1, 7 m. Frost resistance in this case does not matter, the shoots are cut at the root in the fall. The variety is distinguished by moderate shoots, which is more a plus than a minus: this raspberry will not creep in all directions. The berries of Eurasia ripen in early August, and until the end of September, it fully yields. The berries are large. up to 6.5 g of a beautiful dark raspberry color. Their tasting score is 3.9 points, probably due to a noticeable sourness, but it accumulates vitamin C up to 35 mg. The advantages of the variety include excellent yield. up to 6 kg per bush and transportability of berries. The ability to be stored for several days without loss of consumer qualities is rarely seen.
  • Penguin. The shoots are low. up to 1.5 m. Medium-sized berries. up to 5 g, as well as the yield. 2.5 kg. The flavor of the berries is highly dependent on the type of soil and weather. Frost resistance up to 26 degrees, but this is not important for a remontant variety. Fruiting from early August to frost.

Watering and feeding

To grow a strong and healthy plant, it must be watered on time. It is important to ensure that the soil around the bush does not dry out. The root system is located quite close to the surface of the earth, so the plant tolerates a moisture deficit with great difficulty.

To cope with the problem, soil mulching is used. The mulch should be placed so that it fully retains moisture and does not interfere with the development of replacement shoots.

Loosening of the soil is carried out shallowly to avoid damage to the surface roots. Regular removal of weeds is essential. But with full mulching of the garden, it practically does not grow.

Timely fertilization is of great importance. To provide the bushes with potassium, they should be fertilized with wood ash. For 1 plant, you need to use 450 g of the product. It is best to apply the composition in the spring.

Nitrogen agents should be used at the stage of bud break. An excellent solution during this period will be herbal infusion of nettle.

Important! To increase the yield parameters, you can use foliar dressing. For this, tools such as Ryazanochka or Sudarochka are suitable.

Proper crop care

Planting, caring for and reproduction of a raspberry tree has certain characteristics. They should definitely be observed in order to obtain a bountiful harvest.

Planting scheme for raspberry trees

Tree raspberries are planted with a bush and tape method.

Raspberry tree: planting and care, reproduction, photo, video

Reproduction by shoots

In the spring, when the root growth begins to grow, it is dug up along with a piece of root, transplanted into a raspberry tree. The first time, until the plants take root, they need to be watered often.

The main method

As soon as the snow melts, the raspberry tree is examined. Dead, diseased and dry branches and leaves are removed completely. Those shoots that have yielded earlier crops are cut at the root, leaving no stumps. The upper part of the remaining ones is pinched. As a result of the trimming work, only healthy branches in the amount of 5-7 pieces should remain. 1.3-1.5 m high.

Bush planting option

Distance between trees 1.5 meters, between rows about 3 meters. Thickening leads to a decrease in the number of fruits, as well as a deterioration in their quality.

Planting holes are made 1-1.5 meters long and 30 centimeters deep. The bottom is lined with peat, then humus and sawdust, mineral fertilizers are added, everything is covered with fertile soil on top to avoid direct contact of the roots with fertilizers.

Crimson tree formation

The raspberry tree requires a special approach to pruning from gardeners. Experienced agronomists suggest pruning standard raspberries in two stages:

At the end of the first spring, after planting raspberries, shorten the shoots by 5-10 cm.This will achieve the formation of a large number of fruiting branches.
The next spring, cut off the branches formed as a result of the previous pinching by 15 cm.This is how third-order shoots are formed.

Naturally, after winter, spoiled shoots should be removed, and in summer and autumn, cut off all those that bear fruit.

Raspberry tree: planting, care, reproduction and photo

What do you expect when buying raspberry tree seedlings? It is a mistake to believe that now you will have to pick berries from real trees. How, then, does this variety of culture differ from ordinary varieties? In this article, you will learn what a crimson tree is; planting and care, photography, reproduction. you will learn about all this today on our website for farmers.

Crimson tree. what is it?

Raspberry trees are popularly called standard varieties of culture, which are distinguished by thickened stems. Bushes of such raspberries do not resemble trees at all, but their trunks are stronger, do not droop. With a certain type of pruning, you can achieve that the standard raspberry will look like a small tree.

Among the benefits of the raspberry tree are:

unpretentious care;
the raspberry plant does not thicken, since very little root growth is formed;
increased productivity due to the large number of side shoots;
berries are large, well stored, contain few seeds;
tall bushes make harvesting easier;
strong trunks do not break under the force of the winds and the weight of ripe berries;
cold resistance. berries from some varieties can be harvested until late autumn.

However, in addition to the advantages, gardeners also note one significant drawback of the raspberry tree. According to their observations, the berries from such bushes do not have such a pleasant taste and aroma as the berries of ordinary raspberries. Do not forget that much depends on the composition of the soil, the amount of moisture and the sun.

At the end of the brief description of the standard raspberry varieties, let us name the most beloved by gardeners: “Orange Miracle”, “Sun”, “Golden Domes”, “Arbat”, “Krepysh”, “Fairy Tale”. The Tarusa variety of standard raspberries has been the leader in this list for several years now. Some of the listed varieties of standard raspberries are shown in the photo.

Planting a crimson tree

Choosing a place. Like regular raspberries, standard raspberries love sunny places. The soil underneath should be well-drained and fertile. The site before planting seedlings must be fertilized in advance. To do this, use humus, nitroammophoska and ash.

The right time to board. You can plant raspberries in the fall: when the summer heat ends and until the very frost. Most often, planting is done in the spring: in March or April.

Landing. To get a really good harvest from raspberry trees, they need to be planted far enough from each other. So, between the bushes in a row there should be at least 50 cm.Leave a distance of 2-2.5 m between the rows.When planting, you cannot deeply deepen the root collar of the seedling. it is permissible to submerge only 2-3 cm underground.After planting, the shoots are usually cut off, leaving only 30 cm.

Mulching. This is a very important event, since the roots of raspberries are located close to the surface, and therefore dry out quickly. Shallow roots also make loosening and weeding more difficult, and mulching avoids the need for these activities.
Top dressing. Raspberries respond well to spring fertilization with manure and chicken droppings. Usually the substance is applied under the first layer of mulch or before re-mulching.
Disease control. A proven method to protect raspberry bushes from pathogens is to spray them with Bordeaux liquid. At the beginning of summer, prepare a 3% solution, and before flowering. a 1%.
Watering. Especially demanding standard raspberry for watering during the formation and ripening of berries. During this period, watering is carried out at least once a week.
Shelter for the winter. In regions with harsh winters, raspberries are prepared for this period by bending to the ground and covering with agrofibre.
Pruning. All dried and frozen shoots must be cut in early spring. Also, in the fall of the standard raspberry, the sprouted shoots are cut off. By the way, it is after this procedure that the bush actually looks like a tree.

Reproduction of standard raspberries

There are two ways to increase the number of raspberry bushes in your area:

undergrowth;
2. by cuttings.

It is quite rare to apply the first method, since the standard raspberry dates a small amount of root growth. Nevertheless, this method is the simplest and most popular. You just need to dig up the root sprout of the raspberry bush along with the root section, and immediately plant it. Root growth can be stimulated. To do this, all shoots on the bush must be cut to the ground.

In the photo, raspberry propagation by cuttings

Cuttings are another breeding method for the raspberry tree. In this case, the bush must be dug up, and parts of the roots with 1-2 buds on each must be separated. Further, in a peat-sandy substrate, they are germinated and rooted. The seedlings will be ready for planting next year.

Many gardeners have appreciated the benefits of the raspberry tree. Planting and care, photos, reproduction. we have shared all this with you so that you can also appreciate the merits of the considered variety of the shrub loved by many. Standard raspberries are a great opportunity to get more berries with less effort.

How to grow a raspberry tree?

Planting and growing vegetables and fruits, gardening, building and repairing a summer house. do it yourself.

Can gardeners grow a raspberry tree themselves?

All raspberry lovers will certainly be interested in the so-called method of increasing the yield by double pruning the stems (see picture).

The first pruning or pinching of the growing shoot is done in late May. early June when it reaches a height of 1-1.2 m. The stem is shortened by 5-10 cm, which stops apical growth and awakens the buds in the axils of the upper leaves. And by August. September 4-6 lateral growths 40-90 cm long will appear on it.

The second pruning of an already branched stem is performed in the spring of next year. In this case, the tops of lateral growths are shortened by 10-15 cm. The double pruning method can significantly increase the yield of each shoot. However, a delay in the first (June) pruning can lead to non-ripening of lateral branches, and then their freezing.

The method of double pruning in raspberries causes thickening, therefore, when laying a raspberry, a row spacing of at least 2 m is provided, and the distance in a row is 1-1.5 m. In the future, 6-8 replacement shoots are left for fruiting on each plant. This is the only way to increase the number of berries.

Raspberry tree. how to create with your own hands in the garden

So, crimson trees are myth or reality?

With this question we turned to Doctor S.-kh. sciences, professor, famous specialist in berry crops V. N. SOROKOPUDOV. Here’s what he told us.

What do we have now

In the State Register of Breeding Achievements of Russia (2016) 78 varieties of raspberries are registered, of which 40 are recommended for use in the Central Region.

A huge contribution to the renewal of the Russian assortment of raspberries was made by the Kokinsky OP VSTISP, where since 1968 the outstanding scientist Academician I.V. KAZAKOV, and now it is being continued by his student, Professor S.N. EVDOKIMENKO. than 40 new varieties have been created, 32 are included in the State Register. And they are all zoned for the middle lane.

These varieties of raspberries have high quality berries (dessert taste, rich biochemical composition, suitability for freezing and all types of processing). They give good yields every year, are durable, disease resistant. In addition, these are varieties with different ripening periods. from super early (beginning of harvesting in June) to remontant (August. September). Thus, the period of consumption of fresh raspberries has increased to 3.5 months, and the terms of their processing have lengthened accordingly.

Rigorous selection of new varieties takes place according to a number of criteria, and amateur gardeners themselves choose the best ones for their plots, depending on local conditions.

And what would I still like

10 years ago, a breakthrough occurred in raspberry breeding, and remontant varieties were created. Now we enjoy eating fresh raspberries in September. The famous remontant variety Bryansk Marvel grows now in almost every garden, but gardeners again want a miracle. And now there are supposedly super-outstanding raspberry trees with a yield of up to 15 kg and berries of 20 g each (while berries weighing about 8 g are considered large). The novelty is widely promoted on the Internet, and sellers of planting material with might and main advertise excellent seedlings of raspberry varieties with just such properties. And, of course, at a very high price. But what a disappointment comes when expensive seedlings, cared for and cherished by a gardener, give the usual harvest of the most common berries.

Pruning Raspberries

What really is this “crimson tree”?

Raspberry has not yet had a life form “TREE” and still does not. In the 90s of the last century, Professor VSTISP (All-Russian Institute of Selection and Technology for Horticulture and Nursery) V.V. KICHINA created standard raspberry varieties that had tough, non-sticking stems. It was their unscrupulous entrepreneurs who began to call them trees, exclusively in pursuit of superprofits. But they never gave harvests of 15 kg per bush, simply because, by their biological essence, they cannot.

The common raspberry bush consists of a main stem and several growing new ones. After harvesting, the stems that bear fruit are cut off, and the young ones, which will harvest next year, are left.

The stem of the remontant raspberry grows back in spring, in June-July it blooms, and in August-October it gives a rich harvest of medicinal berries. Then, with the onset of stable frosts, all shoots are cut off at ground level, and new ones will grow only next year and will yield a harvest by autumn. And there is no need to increase its winter hardiness, the snow will cover and warm the plants.

Back to reality

Unfortunately, there are no other ways to create raspberry trees yet. You need to be critical of beautiful pictures and advertising promises. A fairy tale is a fairy tale. Only painstaking work is a guarantee of a high and high-quality raspberry harvest. But you can buy saplings of traditional and remontant raspberries from us at the VSTISP institute in Biryulevo. There is just a realization of a wide variety of varieties, as they say, for all tastes.

At the end of the conversation, we asked Vladimir Nikolaevich what varieties of raspberries he grows for himself.

Here’s what he answered.

Of the traditional varieties, Arbat, Solnyshko and Novost Kuzmina are an old variety, but there is no sweeter one. Berries are fragrant, with a real raspberry flavor.

From the remontants. the novelties of Zev and the Orange Miracle and, of course, the bestsellers. the Golden Domes and the Bryansk Miracle.

Amateur gardeners should take into account that remontant raspberries need more heat, and choose a sunny, well-protected place with fertile soil for them.
