Winding line on different types of spools

For example, if the mowing head has only one spooling bar, you wind the line without folding it. Rotate in the direction shown on the bobbin case and temporarily engage the free ends of the filament in the slots in the case. For trimmers with four tendrils, the consumable material is four short pieces that are inserted one by one into the holes of the already assembled head.
After the line is wound onto the bobbin, the body must be reassembled. Position the spool so that the line ends can be pulled into the output holes of the trimmer head. Slots in the bobbin where they were temporarily inserted will keep them from slipping out. If you don’t have any of these slots, use your fingers to hold the ends in place when you put the spool into the housing. After pulling the loose ends into the exit slots, close the cover and secure it with clips or screws. The reel is part of the design of the grass trimmer, which is located inside the head of the brushcutter, reel or spool. Depending on the manufacturers, trimmer heads can be different. But this article only discusses the Patriot, although many other companies use their mechanism.
Now you need to understand how to properly remove the head from the grass trimmer and how to pull the drum out of it.
Here’s how to unwind a manual head on a trimmer.
- First of all, you need to clean the head of dirt and grass adhesion, if it is dirty. To do this, lift the brushcutter head upward and, taking hold of the guard, remove the special protective cover put on the drum.
- The next step is to remove the spool from the reel. The spool can be easily pulled out with one hand because it is not attached in any way inside the reel.
- The reel itself is attached to the trimmer with a bolt. This bolt must be unscrewed, after which you can easily pull out the reel. To do this carefully, you should support the drum with the spool, while unscrewing the screw counterclockwise.
- Now you can pull out the coil. As mentioned above, it is not attached to anything except the hook on the metal shaft, so do not pull it out by force. Carefully, in a circular motion, pull the spool out of the drum.
- Now it remains to remove the old line and follow these instructions.
Reassemble the spool and reel according to the reverse algorithm.
Before threading the line, make sure that you have bought the right line for the grass trimmer. If the filament does not fit, it will increase fuel or power consumption and the engine load on the brushcutter.
To change the filament itself, you need to prepare a length of filament of the required size. Usually about 4 m of fishing line is needed. The size depends on the size of the filament, for example its thickness, but also on the size of the spool itself. If you can’t determine the exact length, you can do the following: insert and wind the line until the spool is fully charged (the line level will be compared to the protrusions in the sides of the spool). Make sure that the line sits flat on the reel.
Do not forget that a thick thread will be shorter than a thin one.
The instructions for threading the line onto the spool are described below.
- The prepared thread should be taken and rolled in half. Make sure one end is 0.1-0.15 meter longer than the other.
- Now you need to take the ends in different hands. The one which is smaller must be pulled up to the larger one, so that it becomes shorter by a factor of 2. When bending, you should keep an indentation of 0.15m.
- Locate the slit inside the baffle of the spool. Into this slit, carefully extend the loop that was obtained earlier.
- To continue working, you will need to determine the winding direction of the thread in the spool. To do this, just examine the coil. there should be an arrow on it.
- If you can not find the arrow-indicator, it is possible that there is a written marking. An example is shown in the photo below. It is necessary to examine the head of the spool. It has a direction indicator on it. However, this is the direction of travel of the spool. To get the winding direction, you need to wind in the opposite direction.
- Now you need to refill the spool with fishing line. It is worth noting that there are special guiding grooves inside the spool. When winding the thread, you must follow these grooves, otherwise you could damage the grass trimmer. At this point you have to charge the spool very carefully.
- When the user has wound almost all the thread, you should take the short end (do not forget about the protrusion of 0.15m) and pull it through the hole located in the wall of the spool. Now you need to repeat this action in the same way with the other end (the other side).
- Put the spool itself in the head of the spool, before putting the line through the holes inside the reel.
- Now it is time to return the reel to its place. After that, you need to take two hands by the ends of the fishing line and pull them to the sides. Then you need to put the cover in place (here you can safely apply force until you hear a characteristic click).
- It remains to perform “cosmetic work”. See if the thread is too long. You can start the grass trimmer and see if it’s comfortable. If the thread comes out a little long, you can cut it with scissors.
